What our customers say about their holidays

  • Hazel - Verified booking

Whilst The Garden Flat is well situated in terms of its location, (which was the main reason we chose it), we found it lacking in a few ways.

Firstly, we (my sister and I) found it difficult to access entry, and were later advised by the owner that there was a 'knack' to inserting the key in the keyhole and turning it to unlock the door - not ideal. The owner came round because she had forgotten to leave the back door key in the property, so after explaining our difficulty in accessing entry, she explained the process of inserting the key then having to lift it up before turning. Even knowing this, we still experienced difficulty throughout the week. The owner said she would arrange for a locksmith to change the lock whilst we were there, but we did not want the inconvenience of that, so left it. However, she did say she would arrange for that to be done after we had left. Secondly, that standard of cleanliness was not great. There were clumps of dust that could be seen along the edges of the carpet and under the radiators. We had taken anti-bacterial wipes with us, so wiped many of the surfaces when we first arrived. There were edges that had clearly not been wiped for quite some time, because we removed layers of dust! The water in the shower was not running away very well, so I took courage in both hands and cleaned the plughole, removing a large clump of hair and gunk! I am afraid that I could not summon up the courage to clean the inside of the kitchen bin, but the dirt/grime that was sitting on it was a breeding ground for germs and if I used this bin, I quickly shut the lid and washed my hands. I do not think I am particularly fussy, but I certainly expect things to be clean and tidy. Since your instructions to occupants mentioned the importance of handwashing and hygiene (which I fully understand, endorse and practice!), I would have thought properties would have received the same level of attention to hygiene. Thirdly, there were instructions left about closing the curtains in the main bedroom. These were very heavy curtains, and the instruction was to lift the curtain when closing them. A note was included that the owners had already had to replace the curtain track twice. Personally, I would have thought that was an indication that the curtains should be replaced with ones that were easier to close. However, my sister, who used that bedroom for the week, decided against closing the curtains, because the process was so ‘involved’, therefore she just closed the roller blinds, but the roller blind on the middle (largest) window did not reach the windowsill! So, a row of cushions had to be placed along the sill in order to block the light out! Not ideal! I left a note to the owners of the property explaining out findings and disappointment. It was a shame, because with a little more attention to detail The Garden Flat has the potential to be a cosy and inviting rental. I wonder if my note ever reached the owners' hands, because I am aware that the cleaners of the property were waiting for us to leave (which we did at 09:30 on the day of departure); it was surprising to find the cleaners hanging around, because we did not have to leave until an hour later! However, since the cleaners did not come off very favourably in my note, I am guessing the owners did not receive it. I would be grateful if you could enquire after the fact. I fully appreciate that it is the owners' responsibility to attend to the cleaning, not Sykes, but it also reflects on your business. In fact, this was the second cottage we had rented through you in the space of nine months, and the other property needed a deep clean, too; it was The Thatched Cottage in Chipping Camden (we stayed there last October). I would appreciate your comments with regard to these matters. I am happy for you to publish this feedback, but I suspect you will not want to.

We were very shocked and disappointed on arrival at this cottage.

The outside was extremely unkempt. There were weeds and dried leaves in the front. The gate needed varnishing. The windows had water running down the inside. It looked as though the double glazing had blown. They obviously need replacing. The windows were dirty. The front door needed varnishing. The glass in the front door needed cleaning. There was green mould on the picnic bench and seat in the front. The front of the cottage was not very inviting at all. Nothing like the pictures on the website. The table in the living room for two people was more like one would use for camping. It wasn't very clean. It was right in front of the window and if one wanted to have a meal, there was no privacy as there are a lot of people passing on foot. If the windows are repaired, a blind might be appropriate. The microwave wasn't working when we tried to use it. We rang the owners wife and she told us her husband would purchase a new one and drop it in. He arrived with the microwave. We asked did he want to check it was working but he seemed to be in a hurry. He told us to just set it up ourselves and put the old one in the box outside in the front. That just added to the outside looking more unkept. On removal of the old microwave we were horrified to find something spilled there very congealed. There was a mound of crumbs and a big spider ran out. This had obviously not been cleaned for a long time. There are health and safety issues in an unclean kitchen. The kitchen floor was not clean. There was a plastic bottle behind the bin and some chipolatas on the floor. We had to clean the kitchen ourselves with antibacterial spray and wipes. There were a few live crawling woodlice on the stairs. The bathroom was in need of maintenance . It needed painting there were marks on the skirting boards. The taps on the bath were stiff and hard to turn on and off. The hot tap was swivelling around on turning on and off. The seal on the shower screen needs replacing. It was preventing movement over the bath. The window ledges in the bedrooms were dirty. We cleaned them ourselves. There was thick dust on the back.of the mirror in the larger bedroom. The tops of the bedside cabinets weren't very clean. The mattress on the bed was thin and the springs were sticking in our back. It needs replacing. The iron bedstead was very uncomfortable and noisy. If of all these issues were addressed then the cottage would be of a higher standard meriting more stars It is only a ten to fifteen minutes walk into Howarth. There is a good bus service on the road nearby. There is also a lovely pub a few minutes away with good food and a handy corner shop. We have stayed in a number of Sykes Cottages over the years and generally we have never given a bad review.

This was our first proper winter and Christmas Break away from Kent.

And I am delighted to report that our stay at NI Cottage was wonderful. And we would stay again. For our needs it was perfect. Despite howling winds and snow dusting the surrounding countryside. We stayed effortlessly warm and snug in the cosy enclave of this cottage. The walls being constructed of stone and 2 feet thick and double glazing all around. You could not hear the howling wind. All facilities for a home from home experience were in place, cosy and characterful in this listed property. The location is perfectly placed in the hills outside of the picturesque villages of Haworth (15 min walk) and Oxenhope. With excellent choices of watering holes and restaurants. And within earshot and view of the local Heritage Steam Railway. Which was very busy with Elf and Santa Express excursions. To hear the iconic sounds and sights of a Steam Train chugging and puffing it's way through the valley was a delightful backdrop to the peace and quiet of this location during our stay! We cannot recommend this location enough. It suited us as we like to explore and walk, and partake of the local offerings of real ale and good local food. We cannot recommend the Steam Packet Brewery in Haworth enough. To be able to then retreat to the peace and quiet of the cottage was great. The owners lived on site, next door in an enviable traditional stone historic farmhouse and were on hand to check in with us to see if everything was OK. If you are the type of people who are looking for a quiet cosy retreat. Are happy keeping your own company and don't need all the bells and whistles of a busy resort location on your doorstep. Then this is the place for you.

Haworth was a beautiful place to stay and the location of the cottage was good.

The cottage itself wasn’t up to standard. First impression of outside looked scruffy, weeds and untidy baskets, broken gate and leaves/litter. All the windows were misted up/broken down and need replacing. Woodlice both dead and alive crawling in the property. Kitchen bin not emptied and floor not cleaned. Smell to the property like heavy smoker has lived there. All lights and skirting boards dusty/cobwebs. Bed wasn’t a king size as advertised, bedding all ok, bathroom ok…serviceable but ceiling needed cleaning and painting and the bedroom one also. Needs a good clean under all furniture which I would of done myself but only small hand held vacuum available to use. We made the best of the stay and out most of the day, didn’t cook in the kitchen, lucky with the weather so we were able to leave windows open. Wouldn’t return to this cottage, it’s the first time we have ever been disappointed with accommodation in over 30yrs! The locals made the holiday as all so friendly we would definitely return to this area.

Had a wonderful stay at this beautifully decorated flat.

It’s got a garage plus plenty of on-street parking and is in a brilliant location—just a minute’s walk from a Sainsbury’s and lovely cafes. The town centre and Harrogate Conference Centre are less than 10 minutes away, and it's easy to get into York and Leeds by public transport. The main bedroom is charming, with high ceilings and a very comfortable king-size bed and high-quality linen. The second bedroom is cosy with twin beds, and the kitchen is well-equipped with everything you need. The private south-facing patio was a lovely spot to unwind. The hosts were fantastic—just around the corner if needed—and left a really thoughtful welcome pack with wine, treats and everything you need for a cuppa. A charming stay regardless of the occasion. Highly recommend!
