Bodmin is one of the most historic towns in all of Cornwall, and it will make an awesome choice for a last minute cottage break if you enjoy learning about a town's past. The name Bodmin is derived from the Cornish “Bod-meneghy” which can be translated as “dwelling of or by the sanctuary of monks” representing the long lasting ties between the town and the church. A cottage break in Bodmin should certainly include a walk up the Beacon Local Nature Reserve, where at the summit of the hill sits a 44-metre tall monument to Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert, built in 1857. Nearby Bodmin Moor has also been named as one of the best places in the country to stargaze, so even more reason to visit!
