What our customers say about their holidays
Geoffrey - Verified booking
This review is late in coming to you because we have been away since occupying Flat 27 Bigbury on sea and is further to communications with Jackie and our interaction prior to our booking and having read the complaints during the summer about this flat.
On entering this flat one is amazed by the size and the views. However within twenty four hours of arrival you realise that this flat has been well used and most of the things in this flat are past their best. It has been cleaned to a superficial level but the dirt is in nooks and crannies that only a deep clean will cure. The list below is only some of the faults many of which have been noted in the visitors book particularly this year. Talking to the caretaker we were informed that the owner has not visited for nearly a year and he is left to do running repairs. It is in need of TLC, are his words. In the Kitchen the fridge has no Ice tray and no fridge light. There is no freezer which is a requirement in a holiday flat. The toaster has crumbs under the tray and on the tray. The toaster needed it's crumb trays washed. Waste food bin had grimed in dirt around the rim Knife block greasy, no small paring knife and some were purchased All glasses needed washing before use Dishwasher had no salt or rinse aid in it. Washing machine was too complicated and unable to activate the drying cycle Lights under shelves not working and shelves not clean Wooden tray not clean and all Items on tray not cleaned eg sugar bowl dried sugar solid and pot for tea bags filthy. In the Lounge the television was not very modern so disappointing not to obtain iPlayer or Netflix The light by TV does not work possible a loose wire Windows not very clean smeary ad balcony glass surround needs cleaning. Robertâs Radio very smeary Dust ++ on shelf Arms on soft furniture shiny and grubby Dining chairs between vertical slats dirty. In all rooms the shutters are not easy to open and have dropped and scuffed the floor and window sills. It needs a carpenter to rehang them. In fact there were some that we could never open. Doors and paintwork could do with a good wash or paint. In the bathroom the area behind the toilet pan was grubby No rubber cushions on the toilet lid and seat making them unstable. Bedside lamps with open glass shades had dirt and dead flies inside. The balcony furniture needs a complete set of cushions that fit. 2nd bedroom is very small and only suitable for children. The shower needs a complete upgrade with thermostatic valves. The light in the mirror is not working. A good point is that there was plenty of hot water. The bed and bed linen are very comfortable. The weather was good and we managed to make ourselves comfortable but the rent for the flat is totally overpriced as it does not deliver the level of modern conveniences and cleanliness one expects in a flat at this rental. I therefore request a refund of £400 and suggest the owners visit to see how much maintenance work is required as good cleaning can only be done if furniture and paintwork is maintained. Yours sincerely, Geoffrey Daddy

Hello, this weekend was purchased as a present four our friends who had just got married.
The reason we chose the property was because of the hot tub so we were going to use it as a base and socialise in the evenings relaxing in the tub. On arrival the property was very clean and tidy inside (only two coffee saches for four guests? But i guess thats just a nice little extra anyway) . The following morning we went to use the hot before going out but unfortunately the water smelt slightly stagnant and was only 34 degrees (certainly not hot tub temperature). I found test strips for the tub, there was no indication of chlorine or bromine in the water hence it was not set up properly. This was somewhat disappointing as the attraction of the property was the hot tub hence I felt we paid a higher than average price for the area. I phoned the owner (Gary) and explained once we were able to catch up with eachother. Gary was apologetic and put the error down to the company responsible for maintenance. Not a fault of the property but the following evening the neighbours had a loud domestic incident (not really what we wanted when we were trying to treat our friends to a relaxing weekend). I'm sure on other occasions this would be an ideal location for anyone wanting to stay in Torquay, easy walking distance to key locations, but on this occasion it didn't work out for us. There are understandably lots of rules around the hot tub use with a potential fine of £100 if they are breached. It's a shame there wasn't an offer of a £100 refund as the facility wasn't available. I wouldn't choose to stay at the property again as there are better value locations / hotels that would be suitable for similar, if not less money.

The Finest Stays Team - Verified booking
There are places you stay, and then there are places that stay with you. Northside is most certainly the latter. From the moment we turned down the winding Devon lanes—flanked by wild hedgerows and the occasional sheep—we knew we’d found something special. Nestled in a quiet field where the pace of life shifts with the sun, this stunning hideaway offered us a rare and welcome pause. A sanctuary. A true exhale. By day, we wandered the rolling hills straight from the hut, the South Hams opening before us like a well-worn novel. A cycle to Totnes for lunch brought its own adventure, while afternoons were spent listening to birds above from the sun-warmed patio, coffee in hand, time gently melting away. The nearby beaches—Bantham, Thurlestone, and our secret favourite, Wonnell—were food for the soul, as restorative as the sea breeze that greeted us there. As evening fell, the fire pit flickered to life and the stars arrived in quiet procession. We listened to the stillness. We slept deeply, cocooned in washed linen and soft textures. Every detail—from crafted furnishings to handmade ceramics—tells a story of care and creativity. This is more than a stay; it’s a deeply nourishing retreat. A place for reading, resting, stargazing and forgetting to check your phone. Northside isn’t just off the beaten path—it’s off the clock, off the grid, and utterly off the scale in charm.

What can we say about the Bickleigh?
First the bad stuff.......erm.... can't think of any. Now for the good stuff, where do we start? The owners are wonderful hosts, attentive and friendly but not at all intrusive and are willing to have a nice chat if you wish. The location is wonderful, on a hillside overlooking beautiful fields and trees, the owner's house is lower down the hill and can't be seen from the lodge so there is an uninterrupted view over the valley. It is so quiet and peaceful, we can see why they call it Ridgeview Retreat. If you want peace and quiet with stunning views this is the place to be. The lodge is amazing with everything you need, a good range of utensils, crockery, towels, even an emergency pack of toiletries. The TV (unlike in most places) has Amazon prime and Netflix and the WIFI works very well. You do need to allow a decent time for the hot tub to heat up (3 hours or so) and be attentive to keep the fire roaring until the tub is hot, after that make sure you let the fire die down or it may be too hot! I must mention the mushrooms, growing all round the lodge and in the field were masses of field mushrooms which we could pick and eat, quite delicious All in all, Ridgeview Retreats is a wonderful place with wonderful hosts and I recommend it to anyone seeking a peaceful few days.
