This is one of 4 cottages at Birkerthwaite, a former 17th century Lakeland Farmstead which is high in the hills and features beams taken from shipwrecks on the Cumbrian Coast. Birkerthwaite lies at the end of an unmade track and is surrounded by tranquil moorland scenery and farmland. A perfect escape from the busy modern world. This is fantastic walking countryside and the elevated position gives views of Scafell and the Eskdale Valley. Birkerthwaite Stable (W41477) is a single-storey converted stable with rustic charm heated by a multi- fuel log-burner that in turn heats a back- boiler. Nearby attractions include Muncaster Castle and Hardknott Roman Fort, whilst the Langdale Pikes and Ambleside on the northern shores of Lake Windermere can be reached via a stunning drive over the Hard Knott and Wrynose Passes. A short drive away is Wast Water; to the west are sandy beaches. Alternatively take the steam train from Ravenglass. Shop 3 miles, pub 2½ miles.

I like to give an honest review of where we have stayed as it’s helpful to understand what a place is like. The accommodation was ok, sadly we didn’t have a welcome box waiting for us which was disappointing. We haven’t stayed anywhere where there wasn’t one before. The outside space is very small, no grass or enclosed space for your dog to exercise and explore, we were surrounded by sheep, literally, which we hadn’t been made aware of. The outside space was not dog secure. Internally, we were only given one towel each, which was not really large enough. It was disappointing. If you are looking for somewhere isolated and you don’t have a dog, it might be perfect for you but we found the isolation difficult as there isn’t anywhere to buy food shopping and only 2 pubs, both over 6 miles away for food. A walkers paradise but sadly not for us.

If you want somewhere away from the touristy parts of the lakes, this is perfect. Beautiful peaceful surroundings and some great walks nearby.

The cottage was a cracking base for exploring the Western Fells. Certainly helped by a week of good weather, albeit accompanied by a fresh easterly wind. Would happily recommend to others & look forward to re-visiting the area myself.
