What our customers say about their holidays

  • Charles - Verified booking

The cottage is part of an hold house split into a few houses, on the far side of Coniston.

Nice and quiet. Grizedale Forest and Tarn How’s are very near for enjoyable walks or in our case runs, from the front door. Downstairs is totally open plan and remodelled to a high standard. Upstairs has a couple of bedrooms, a locked room and a well appointed bathroom with shower and separate bath, all very clean. There is a garden with a bench in the front and another area to the side. We did have a few negatives about our stay. The information pack was very limited. There was no information on where to throw rubbish away once the living area bin was full. I did spot a big industrial size bin at the entrance of the car park, so went to use that. As I was about to open the lid I heard a voice come from the darkness telling me not to put the bin bag in the bin and just leave it there. Very weird! We had a good puzzle over finding the washing machine and dryer. It was nowhere to be found in the house, no information on how to find it in the pack! I again searched in the car park and noticed a block of outhouses had numbers on them, tried the door that matched ours, locked! Went back to Cottage and searched for a key, found on kitchen window sill. Off back out in the dark, across the car park and opened the outhouse door, only to find someone was using our dryer, was informed on complaint to Heart of the Lakes that no one should have access. Strange and now somewhat spooky! There is also no wash basket to carry your washing out and back! We also had a man come to the door one night, saying he was the previous owner, telling us our electric would be off all day the following day, as it was having essential maintenance, contacted H of the L, they knew nothing about it. The electric never went off, very weird. Another negative was nearly no cutlery or crockery matched and most crockery had lots of chips in them. Not great for hygienic eating! There was also no departure details about bins, beds or towels. We also found the sofa pretty uncomfortable, though that is down to everyone’s tastes and needs but our bad backs did not enjoy the sofa. Overall the interior of the cottage is lovely, sadly felt some of the basics inside did not come near the same standard. Upstairs was fine. We also had a power cut on our last night and the emergency torch in the kitchen doesn’t work and yes it had been on charge. Good job we had our head torches as it gets absolutely pitch black. Overall a lovely cottage in a nice quiet location, handy for walks and the Coniston Inn is nearby if you want a hearty meal or a pint. If the sofa, crockery/cutlery and information pack was improved we would have scored it higher. Really wasn’t keen on having to walk to the other side of the car park to wash clothes, glad we didn’t get the usual lashing Lakeland rain or this would have been miserable.

Forrest cottage was just beautiful, one of 7 attached cottages, but felt very separate, very quiet and peaceful.

Shared parking to side of cottage and a very short walk to the front door. Inside the cottage again tastefully decorated and everything you need for a holiday, kitchen had plenty equipment but lacked in space to store food but moving items out of one of the deep drawers soon remedied that. The fridge albeit working, the freezer door didn’t always shut tight so just be vigilant when closing, again not too much hassle. On arrival no welcome pack except a cleaning pack! basic salt and pepper would be nice. There is an outhouse building that houses a washing machine, dryer and small freezer, and plenty storage for bikes or paddle boards, each cottage has its own room and again a very short walk from the cottage front door. Inside the sofa was on the low side difficult to get out of and the small chairs were just small chair, this could be doing with an upgrade on living room furniture. TV freeview and Wi-Fi great. One of the very large cupboards would have been ideal to put your jackets and shoes in, but no hooks. Upstairs very spacious, but main bedroom bed just too soft, the two single beds in the other room were just perfect. The bathroom was lovely, walk in shower and deep bath. No view of the lake but the small garden was perfect and peaceful to enjoy outdoor eating and drinking and gets the sun all day. The area itself is just stunning. We would definitely recommend no 5 Forrest cottage, with a few tweaks one of the best cottages we have stayed in.

It's lovely located cottage with amazing views and its own character and please trust me, I'm not trying to be difficult, but I cannot justify the price we paid with this standard. I'm deeply disappointed with the lack of cleanliness starting from smelly and rooting rug in the bathroom wet from god knows how long (really disgusting). Next, smell of the fuel in one of the rooms with broken window and "notice not to open". I'm not sure if this is safe, but this should be looked by professional. Next, visit the place yourself and see if oven or kitchen hob are clean. During our stay, owen was very dirty (I mean not cleaned properly for a very long timel), and also drops of the very old oil hanging from the hood (it takes long time to build, so as there for wuite a bit). There is also a black sock under sofa in living room, which was quite disgusting to discover when I dropped something... Cleaning materials access to vacuum etc would be also a great benefit if you would like to improve the overall comfort. Waching machine capsules would also be handy for the cost customers pay so they don't need to think about it during their stay. I truly understand old cottage style and already visited many, I just belive it should be very clean and comfortable for the customers considering business character of the property and its cost to stay.

It's an absolutely stunning location, very close to Cathedral caves and Slaters bridge. There's quite a lot of people walking past as it leads to the Cumbrian Way. Very tight road down to the cottage - single lane. Pub about 10 mins walk. The cottage itself is very old so it's quite higgledy piggledy and amazingly thick walls. Lots of steps everywhere so not brilliant for people with mobility issues. Bathroom is downstairs and it's fine - decent space and decent electric shower. It was clean. Kitchen is a good size - underfloor heating works in a small area of it. It's equipped ok. The plates and glasses were dirty though so we had to rewash them. There's a small dishwasher. The downstairs bedroom smells strongly of oil which we notified Original Cottages about and they sent a handyman who said he's been out before due to the same issue. It needs fixing as it's not pleasant. The window is painted shut in the room apart from the small top one which can open a couple of inches. We left that open and the door and the windows in the adjacent rooms but it still smelt of oil. Upstairs theres a small single and a double room which were pretty comfortable. The sitting/dining room is cozy. Comfortable sofas. The internet is ok - not great signal. Could do with some boosters as the walls are so thick.

    Lovely location and surrounding area.

Beautiful view from the garden/sitting out area. Everywhere accessible by car - we think it may have been a long walk into Coniston itself and we weren't sure how to get there so we only drove in. We had three lovely cruises on the lakes but particularly enjoyed the "Gondola" on Coniston Water, we drove through the three passes including Kirkstone and Wrynose, visited "Hill Top" the former home of Beatrix Potter (go early, it is timed admittance and gets very busy!), the Lakeland Motor Museum, Hawkshead (very pretty pedestrianised village) and enjoyed some lovely walks (Esthwaite Water and Tarn Hows). Also can thoroughly recommend the "Bluebird Café" (beautifully clean and the cakes are awesome) overlooking Coniston Water and the supermarket "Booths" in Windermere, lots of choice and fresh produce. All in all a lovely, relaxing holiday with a comfortable cottage to come home to each day. A vacuum cleaner at the property would have been handy as we had muddy shoes some days!
