What our customers say about their holidays

  • Cerisa - Verified booking

Cargoes has a simply stunning location.

Sitting in a window with a warm mug of tea (or cold glass of something) is a true blessing. Welcoming and roomy, the cottage has everything you need for a relaxing, casual stay in a cosy coastal village. Right on the harbour, looking out to sea - I only wish I could wake to this for the rest of my life. Lots of beds with fresh linens and towels, ample storage areas and seating places and a fully equipped and large kitchen. However, there are some areas that need a deep clean - the skirting boards and hard floors all could do with a scrub, especially when little toddler feet are on the tiles getting grubby from the word go. I’m sure it’s just after a hard summer of use and will be addressed during the quieter months. We had an issue with our supermarket delivery, who couldn’t deliver to us on the arrival night as planned and this left us without any food or drink for that evening or next morning, with a 20 month old. I think it needs to made clearer upon booking and in documentation in the property, that there is now nowhere to buy provisions in the village after 5pm and to bring bits with you. There’s no mobile signal, so you won’t get calls or texts, but there is however, a landline in the cottage and fast Wi-Fi. Also the cafe/deli in the village has closed, so this could do with refreshing in the literature. We sometimes struggled with parking - in the summer I can see this would be an even bigger issue. It should be made clearer to non-residents that they shouldn’t park along the street and use the village car park, but every day they parked there, blissfully unaware they weren’t abiding by the village rules. The cottage mentions use of a space at the rear, but we couldn’t work out which one it was, others were clearly marked, but no mention of Cargoes or No. 11’s space, so again, this needs addressing and making more direct. Other than that - dreamy. Book Cargoes even with these little niggles and I can assure you, you’ll have one of the best located properties in Northumberland and like us, will long to return.

This is a beautiful cottage in a beautiful location.

Our poor score is aimed at the letting agent Northumbria Cottage and here’s why. So we’re paying £2k to stay here for a week. When we arrived all the bins at the back were overflowing. Yes of course the cottage information has a line ( buried in pages of other information) about bin day. A lot of the stuff was from a hen party who’d clearly rented it before us . There was a ballon left inside too. What a horrible site and how awful for neighbours. We contacted the letting agency by email . As it was Friday afternoon we got no answer. On the Monday we sorted the rubbish and recycled what we could locally (glass). The remainder has to be driven to the nearest top (an hours round trip). I didn’t get a reply to my email till mid the following week. The tawdry delay was said to be because the email was in my name and not my husband’s name who booked it. I’d identified the property. They could have checked the name on the system and replied to him! It simply said it was a nuisance when people don’t t put the bibs out. How rude? Northumbria Cottages will charge a fortune to the owners. It should be part of the clean up/:management of the property to deal with ignored rubbish. We also requested a high chair which wasn’t put out. We found it eventually but we’d arrived after a six hour journey with a five month baby who needed feeding! The WiFi was also disconnected? That took longer to locate. Northumbria Cottages suggested thé previous occupants must have done that … as if! The latter points are minor. The rubbish situation and the lack of an appropriate response is what prompted the poor review. The bed linen was immaculate and the kitchen very well equipped. Northumbria Cottages are lazy and not customer focussed. You should refund part of the hefty price tag. To the owners we say find another letting agency.

Firstly, the parking information from OC needs to be updated. Someone commented on this in Oct 2022 and it’s still hasn’t been done. If OC gave out the info that’s in the information guide in the cottage, neighbours wouldn’t be disturbed by guests arriving and trying to understand where they can and cannot park. OC are great at keeping you informed and it’s a shame that this hasn’t been sorted out. The cottage is warm and very comfortable. The welcome pack of goodies and the kitchen / bathroom packs are a nice touch. The one log in the basket by the fire hardly constitutes as a basket of logs and there wasn’t any kindling so we had to use the papers that were left. We had seen comments re this prior to our holiday so took logs etc with us. There wasn’t an oven glove which made pulling stuff out of the oven a bit dangerous but the rest of the kitchen equipment was good. Nice to have some nice sharp knives for a change in a holiday let. Overall the cottage was clean, this has obviously been rectified after recent comments made by guests. Some TLC required downstairs. The location is great. We know the area very well so know that there’s not much in Craster apart from The Jolly Fisherman, which is fantastic and Robsons Smokehouse. As long as you know that beforehand you can ensure you have all you need with you. It’s a fantastic base for coastal and country walks and visiting other places up and down the Northumbrian Coast. I’d say this property is great for 4 people (adults) but any more, unless they were children you might struggle a bit with bathroom facilities. Overall we had a great week and we enjoyed our stay at Pegasus Cottage, would we return….probably not as there are so many other properties to choose from.

We’ve had a lovely stay at High Tide House.

It’s in a fabulous location in Craster, just a 2 minute walk to the harbour and Jolly Fisherman pub (who also do takeaway fish & chips too). It’s around a 30 min walk to Dustanburgh Castle too. The house itself is lovely, with more than enough space for everyone and has most things you’d need for a holiday. There were just a couple of small things though that we noticed when we got to the house. Some of the kitchen utensils were dirty, the baking trays especially - they hadn’t been washed from previous guests. Also, there were a couple of chips on some bowls and a glass was cracked in the cupboard too. The BBQ hadn’t been cleaned either, with loads of ash at the bottom and tonnes of grease on the grill part - there were also no utensils for it which was a real shame. We were hoping to have a BBQ whilst we were here but this put decided not to in the end. Also, it would be useful to have some hooks on the back of doors, especially in the bathrooms so we have somewhere to hang towels/clothes etc. there’s nothing in the bedrooms either. Finally, although this doesn’t affect your stay and it’s no one’s fault, if you are a light sleeper and have early risers in your party, be prepared to be woken up from movement upstairs (as it’s an upstairs house). The en-suite bedroom in particular is directly under the kitchen and you can hear everything. Not sure what it’s like in the other bedrooms but we were often woken up very early because of this. Just something to mention. But overall we had a fab time. We probably wouldn’t come back only because and upside down house isn’t for us (first time we’ve stayed in one) but 100% would stay again if it was the usual bedrooms upstairs and living downstairs.

The house is well designed and very comfortable.

The kitchen was well equipped with good oven and large fridge freezer and plenty of crockery, glasses etc. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean. Sadly what let it down was the disappointment re cleanliness in the kitchen/sitting room on our arrival especially given the emphasis on this in the description and in the instructions to us both before and as a firm reminder before leaving. We had to vacuum the rug due to a lot of crumbs, the dark sofa and arm of another sofa were covered in dog hair and numerous articles in the kitchen cupboards needed washing before we could use them including baking trays, cutlery, egg cups, some crockery, plastic plates. I know that people, are not allowed to have their dogs on the furniture but if they do let them it's not for the next people to deal with. As someone else has suggested the pans and baking trays, are very tired. Such a shame as a lovely house. We spent over an hour cleaning thoroughly to make sure that the next people wouldn't have the same experience. Good to have parking and a garden. Craster a delight as always. We had excellent walks to Dunstanburgh, beach day at Bamburgh and a lovely walk and tea at Hawick Hall Gardens. We couldn't use the coast bus due to my husbands need to isolate but it is a fabulous service whuch means you can leave your car at the house. A good meal at the Jolly Fisherman, prebooking well worth it but the fish and chips from the van there were disappointing. Excellent shop at the smokery worth supporting including milk, bread, teabags etc as well as lovely fish.
