  The property was fairly well located and close to the High Street and Morrison’s initially there was a lot of confusion about the damage waiver being paid or not. I had paid it and I had even submitted the payment receipt to host in stay but when I called them one hour before my arrival, they said I don’t have access to the property because I haven’t paid the damage waiver. Complete miscommunication and breaking down of communication at their end. This caused me a lot of stress. The second problem with the property was that if you have a big car like I do you cannot take the car in to where the main door is which means you have to carry luggage and other things like Morrisons shopping all the way in which is quite a distance and not conducive specially if you have elderly parents with you, which I did. Third issue I thought was very important and relevant, that there is no toilet on the main level . Both our ensuite, so if you are chilling in the living room and you have, especially older guests like I did they have to go up to the ensuite in order to use facilities. This is not mentioned in the description and if it was I would have never chosen this property. There was a spotlight flickering in the kitchen on top of the fridge area and it was not a very pleasant feeling. They have a window in the roof and dad does not have any kind of blind so when you are sleeping and it’s sunrise at 4:30 am I was advised that you take a sleeping mask or you will be wide-awake. also a basic thing like a fairy liquid and a sponge was not available for us to wash dishes. There were literally two drops of fairy liquid.

  Central location in village. Recently decorated in bright clean apartment. Host and Stay appear to be letting agents used by the owners to rent out the apartment. After completing the booking on booking.com they inform you that there is an additional charge of £25 or a deposit of £250 (plus a £15 admin charge) for security. As we were only staying for 2 days this was an increase of approx 10% (this was not mentioned anywhere on Booking.com). When questioned on this Host and Stay gave some very well put together replies but maintained that if the deposit wasnt paid we wouldnt get the keys. As we were due to travel within a couple of days we had no choice but to pay up. This left a very bad taste in my mouth. The apartment is in what I would term as an alley. Nice and clean and not a problem except for the parking. Very limited in the "alley" but once we had unloaded luggage, parking on the main road just outside was not a problem. We parked there easily for the full weekend.

  The facilities were modern and the decor was ok The WiFi was too weak to load a web page on my phone or stream TV. The Tv doesn’t have an aerial so we couldn’t use the tv at all (the WiFi extension is shared with another property). One bedroom’s blind was broken off, detached and left on the floor. The skylight blinds were out of reach and open; light came in at 5.30am to wake us up. The bedroom doors didn’t close properly from the inside. The mattresses were too soft. The toilet roll holder was loose, hanging off the wall. The floor in the bathroom was uneven and chipped. Calls, texts and emails to get help things rectified were painful… the host couldn’t answer a straight question, preferring to tell me complaints will be dealt with in 7-10 days. Bedrooms are tiny with no room for a wardrobe. Tv aerial socket in the wall had no connection to the TV. A flimsy indoor aerial in the window didn’t work at all.

  The house is very pleasant, modern and comfortable, well stocked with crockery etc although there were only 3 glasses in each set for 4 people! Unfortunately the hot water in the shower was only lukewarm which was not a pleasant experience on a cold, damp and extremely wet break. The hosts did respond very quickly and sent an engineer however this did not fix the temperature of the shower. Still lukewarm. There is a skylight without a blind in both bedrooms, resulting in early morning wake-ups which is slightly frustrating when you are on a mini break. If you can’t fix blinds supply eyemasks!! Or recommend you take them. Other than these little irritations, the house is ideal for a break in Barnard Castle; location is ideal. Lovely cafe next door to the house and castle, shops, cafes and restaurants all within walking distance. “Barney”folk are very friendly and welcoming.

  The airbnb was adequate at best. It does state in the description that there is a £250 "damage deposit" or a £25 "damage waiver" but this could be cleaner in the breakdown of price. As lots of other reviews mention the bedrooms both have skylights - so you'll wake up when the sun does. Blinds could be installed or an eye mask provided. There is no information about the local area or recommendations, this very much feels like a soulless agency run airbnb with a poor landlord bodge job vibe. Lots of handles are loose and the walls are very scuffed. The bathroom wasn't clean in my ensuite and there was a large skid mark in the toilet which was really unappealing. There were also cobwebs everywhere and several large spiders in the rooms. The cups and glasses were mostly dirty and had a thick coating of dust on them. Barnard Castle however is a truly lovely area.
