What our customers say about their holidays
Louise - Verified booking
The cottage itself was nice and clean but there were a couple of small issues.
The Dyson cleaner didnât seem to want to pick up any dirt and the can opener was broken so we had to resort to using a knife! Also there were no cleaning cloths so we had to busy some. The guest book didnât mention anything about the swimming pool and we had to find this information from our neighbours. Also there was no mention about the access to the Ruby Way walk which we also had to find out from the local pub landlord!! The main issues were outside the cottage......on first arrival we had to cut back the overgrown bush alongside the parking area before we could unload the car. Then we were not pleased by the look of the decking area. For a start it needed a good clean and was in need of a fresh coat of treatment. It was really uncared for and the plants around the decking were really overgrown and untidy. On reading the comments in the visitors book it seems other guests had mentioned the untidiness too but nothing seems to have been done about it. The next issue was the unsightly properties close to us. The larger house the other side of our fence was taking all our light and looks like it has been left unattended for quite some time. As with the smaller property adjacent to us which also looks like it hasnât had anyone visit it for some time. Itâs patio area was a real mess and this is the view we had when we sat out in our patio area. We did spend most of our days out but if we were unable to do this then we would not have been entirely happy spending time around the cottage. So I would not recommend staying at Peek a Boo but maybe look at other properties on the site

We didnât enjoy the holiday at all.
When we first got there a dog bed had been put in the wardrobe it stunk we put it in a cupboard. The tv we were unable to watch there was so much interference and cutting out having no signal. I reported it to Sally who said she spoke with an engineer and had sorted it.she left us a phone number for the engineer we thought it wasnât down to us to sort the owner should have. Unfortunately that wasnt the case. We couldnât listen to music instead as the music centres power lead didnât even reach the power point I had to use my phone instead. There was no washing machine in the cottage just a dishwasher Iâd rather have had a washing machine I didnât use it. There was a washing machine on site which I didnât want to use. I would have had to stay with it until it had finished washing to then put it on an airer I wouldnât have put it on the shared line. We actually went home a day earlier then we should have we had had enough. I certainly wouldnât stay there again. Devonâs council should be ashamed of themselves all the road and I do mean all had craters not just pot holes they were huge and deep how we didnât burst a tyre Iâll never know, such a shame in a beautiful county

A gem of a hideaway, secret and welcoming.
Great views from all the windows and plenty of outside space to sit, chill out and enjoy. It was smashing for me, all on one level and easy to get around. The bed was comfortable with enough pillows and extra cover if we felt cool. More than enough towels for the compact bathroom and plenty hot water. I sat outside on a sun trap terrace and on the deck reached from the sitting room. A brook burbles and gushes through the garden and goldfinches and blackbirds were so very entertaining as were the woodpeckers flying to and from the nest. A wonderful place for some armchair birdwatching. The garden was a great with trees, shrubs and flowers all slightly wild and romantic with a feel of a real secret garden that was fun to explore. Our host was great, showed us around and very usefully advised which pubs to avoid! Itâs a superb position for a day at the beach, not far to Seaton and Sidmouth. Excellent for shopping in Honiton, great butchers, wine shop and a plethora of cakes and other treats to be had. Not far into Somerset are Crewkerne and Ilminster for more cakes, art, music and gentle strolling. An absolutely fabulous holiday breakâ¦

On arriving at Peek-a-boo we were approached by a man drinking a can of cider bluntly telling us to ânot park there!
â even though it was the designated parking spot for the cottage. No âhelloâ or introduction but after moving our car, he then proceeded to tell us he was in fact the caretaker. Once we had settled in he did take us round the park which was helpful. The cottage itself was ok but is need of updating. It smelt quite musty and although it was clean, there were a lot of cobwebs! Luckily there was a hoover so I went around the whole cottage hoovering up cobwebs and spiders! You cannot open the window in the bathroom so after having a shower, everything is soaking wet and the extractor fan doesnât do much. The toilet seat was also broken. The decking area is nice but again, needs cleaning and unfortunately the derelict house directly in front of the cottage is not a good look. We only used the cottage as a base to sleep/shower etc and we were out every day and it is a good base as itâs not too far from lots of National Trust parks which we love and places like Boscastle, Tintagel, Bude etc. All in all a good stay but definitely needs deep cleaning and updating.

Absolutely fab!
The owners are lovely too and provide some basics - tea, coffee, milk, fruit juice, some fresh tomatoes and a scrummy home baked loaf. The Hut is SO cute and romantic and so many little touches - my puppy loved the dog bed and leapt straight in! Itâs lovely and quiet, with only the odd rumble of traffic if the wind blows towards you. Itâs mainly the tweeting of birds and splashing of the river youâll hear. Thereâs a couple of owls that hoot away every night and the cockerel will crow each morning. Blissful. If you donât have a car, bear in mind that there are no facilities in Jacobstowe itself. Busses are every half hour or so, in either direction. The nearest supermarket is in Hatherleigh. Our one and only disappointment was the fact the nearest pub - in Exbourne - was closed due to Covid which is just unfortunate timing. We both really needed this total break from âreal lifeâ and loved every minute. We were hoping for a new lockdown to be enforced before we could go home!! Even the puppy was sad to leave.
