What our customers say about their holidays
Ian John - Verified booking
You should not advertise this as a lodge.
It's a big caravan with a large balcony. If you had to carry anything to the bedroom you had to walk sideways as the corridor is only about 2 foot 6 inches wide. It would be impossible to swing a hamster in the twin bedroom never mind a cat !!! Ther was only a foot between the two beds. The site itself was ok if you like peace and quiet because you'll get loads of it. It was like spending a week in a graveyard. There was a clubhouse which only opened once a week !! There was a small shop with almost nothing in it. I was told they didnt have a delivery. I genuinely only had a conversation with 2 holiday makers the whole week we were there.....I do not feel what I paid for the week was good value for money and i was very disappointed. The only good thing was we had a week of good weather but even then we left early on the Friday afternoon. There were a large number of pitches were lodges had been taken off site. Perhaps more people had the same opinions that we had. I will not be booking at Woodland Lodge Again......

We had a great couple of weeks here in Esklets Cottage.
The house was perfect for us, a family of four - 2 adults and 2 teens. Castleton is a really good base with walks straight out of the doors, great views, a pub, tearoom, coop and fancy deli all in the village itself. The village is also on a trainline which makes for car-free possibilities too and there's lots to do within striking distance by car as well. We swam in the sea, in waterfall pools and the gorgeous Helmsley open-air pool; walked by the sea, on the moors and in lovely dales; visited castles and abbeys and the excellent Ryedale Folk Museum and ate our own bodyweights in local cheeses and cream teas. The cottage itself had everythinhg we needed including a very well equipped kitchen with a large dining table and a place to sit outside. It's clear too that the owners have made a special effort to make their guests welcome - the information folders about the house and local area were brilliant and the homemade cake, eggs, milk and biscuits left for us on arrival were very welcome. Highly recommended.

The majority of aspects of our stay were wonderful.
The sea view was a bonus, the field at the side for our dog to play and chase his ball, bonus, the peace and quiet bonus, and the thoughtful gate guard on the decking to keep the dog in bonus. All of which were appreciated. However, the double bed did not have a proper mattress I was stunned to find it was just a deep piece of foam!!! It was so uncomfortable my partner tried to slept on the 2 seater sofa and he's 6'2" Not ideal. I tried to sleep in the other twin room but it was like sleeping on a moving jelly. So the twin room mattress' were very uncomfortable too. Not what you want on holiday, when trying to relax and enjoy our first ever trip to Yorkshire, and decided to return home 3 days earlier than planned. :( :( Also as a family of 3 the fridge was way too small, there was room for a normal size fridge. However, on saying this, if these things were changed we would consider returning and hiring the lodge again.

We liked it so much that we've booked again for October, but for longer.
We spent every evening on Saltburn or Whitby beaches. Places like Eden Camp and Beamish are an easy drive away. The train station is handy too, our 6 year old loved a trip to Great Ayton on it. The cottage itself is quite large. A large living room and a kitchen diner, but also 2 hallways, a downstairs loo, utility and a cupboard with lots of puzzles and games. There are 4 bedrooms on the next 2 floors. The master bedroom has a king bed with a fabulous mattress. There's even a basket of emergency period products. The amount of storage in the property is great, there are so many build in cupboards! The only downside is the lack of railings on the raised area of the garden and we found the bins a bit small. Parking is also a bit of a nightmare due to a very large mini bus mainly. But apart from that it was absolutely perfect for us.

The situation of the lodge.
Beautiful scenery. The cleanliness and facilities the lodge had to offer. The friendliness of the owner and the willingness to sort out the door lock when we had problems with this. We will definitely be back here to stay. The layout of the small site was excellent and the fact you had privacy . It was beautifully laid out and very tidy. It was quiet and peaceful. The area is well equipped for visiting the likes of Beamish, middlesoborough, Redcar and Saltburn, all of which were excellent. We also visited the North York Moors Railway and Whitby, which was about 30 minutes or less to travel. Excellent views from the accommodation. Couldn't find fault with anything. Many thanks to the owner, see you again soon we hope.
