What our customers say about their holidays
Mrs Denham - Verified booking
Our week at the Reading Rooms was a real treat! It’s a lovely old impressive building, check out the inscription in the stone windowsill outside and read the history kindly provided by the friendly helpful owners. The cottage was spotlessly clean and has high ceilings and large windows that flood the living space with daylight. Furnished with 2 quality comfy three seater sofas, a large dining table seating 6 to allow all the family to eat together and has a very well equipped kitchen including a washer/dryer, dishwasher, vacuum, iron and board and even a blender! We really appreciated all the little extras provided for our comfort that are not always found in holiday properties….tea, coffee, sugar, condiments, washing up liquid and tablets for the dishwasher, cleaning liquids, kitchen roll, foil, bin bags, extra toilet rolls, hand wash, plants and a pretty vase of flowers on the table on arrival. Tucked away over the kitchen is the mezzanine reached by a dog leg staircase thoughtfully protected by a baby gate. Up there we found a selection of books to while away a peaceful hour or two. The super-king and king size beds were extremely comfortable so a good nights rest was had by all. We enjoyed sunny afternoons on the decking, the most gorgeous of sunsets and late nights in the hot tub star gazing. We found this was great base for visiting Bude, Woolacombe, Clovelly, Croyde and enjoyed the scenery on Exmoor on the way to Lynmouth. And finally ….we have to recommend the pub the Chichester a couple of hundred yards away; the staff made us so very welcome with the dog and pushchair and serve the most amazing Sunday lunch…. Cannot wait for a return visit and would certainly recommend.

We enjoyed our stay at July cottage, despite some cleanliness issues which we have raised with the owner separately. The location in the village is lovely, on a very sweet pedestrianised lane, and the village itself is about 20mins from Saunton, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe, using narrow country roads mostly. The space is well organised and decorated, and we had most things we needed for our stay. It's worth taking extra logs for the fire - we stayed at the end of summer when days were around 18° and the cottage was chilly at night, probably because it has very thick walls, so we needed the heat of the fire. Accessibility notes as someone who has mobility issues with a knee injury - there are steps between the main bedroom and bathroom once you're upstairs. The shower screen opens outwards into the bathroom to allow more space to climb in and out of the bath. A non-slip bath mat is provided. There are a couple of types of cobbles on the wall from the car park to cottage, and the ground is generally uneven. I found these cobbles slippery in wet weather. If you arrive on the dark, make sure you have a torch to walk to the cottage. If you're planning to use the second bedroom as an adult be aware it's a small single bed very low to the ground and isn't particularly comfortable. We would consider returning if assurances were made about the cleanliness issues we've raised.

We had a fantastic stay at the Reading Rooms. Great getaway for exploring north Devon. The house has a lovely open plan layout and worked great for us as a family of 4 (2 adults + 2 young children), with the bedrooms set up as a large double and twin. Excellent decked area to the rear with plenty of seating options and a hot tub! Being in Bishops Tawton, Barnstaple is under 10mins away by car and has all the shops you need for supplies (large Aldi / Sainsburys / Tesco). Off road parking for 2 cars is helpful and a nice pub (Chichester Arms) 2 mins walk down the road. Easy to get in to Barnstaple by bus if needed as there is a stop just down the road, made a fun afternoon with the kids to go take a walk round the Pannier Market. Within easy reach of lots of nice beaches we chose to explore Westward Ho! and Woolacombe which the kids loved, being expansive soft sand. Instow and Bideford were nice little towns which both had options for breakfast (Bideford also has a great kids park and paddling pool). We also had a trip to Watermouth Castle which has a younger kids theme park in the grounds, both ours loved it. Would highly recommend the Reading Rooms for anyone looking for a well maintained, convenient and unique property for exploring the picturesque north Devon coast.

The cottage first of all was spotless.
So much attention to detail. There was milk and a lovely box of biscuits on arrival, very welcome after a long drive. We've stopped in a lot of holiday cottages and this one is definitely one of the better ones. The simple things that make a holiday cotrage have all been thought of. Everything you need for washing up, laundry, loo roll, foil, cling film...I could go on! There was plenty of crockery etc, again spotlessly clean. The bed was super comfy with lovely bedding. We took our own throws for the furniture....we have a dog, but these were also provided along with bowls, toys and even a dog bed in the dining area. Parking is limited, but that's made clear and we parked a 5 minute walk away and it wasn't an issue. I wouldn't say Bideford wowed me, but the wider area is so beautiful, even in late March and we like to go and visit different places so were just looking for a base. I can't reccomend the cotrage highly enough. Enclosed quiet garden and great communication from Debbie. We were lucky on the whole with the weather considering the time of year. Went to Appledore, Instow, Minehead, Lynton and Lynmouth, Padstow and loads of places inbetween. Dog friendly beaches a plus and they were huge! For value for money I can't say anything more than book !

A great house,clean and inviting.
There was milk in the fridge and a nice box of biscuits waiting for us. It was a pleasure to use the very well equipped kitchen, which we made use of a lot,due to the fact that we did not have good weather during our stay. The garden was a bonus for my dog, safe and enclosed. I loved all the little handmade" seaside" ornaments and various pictures around the property. Parking was an issue close to the property, but we were able to find spaces each day in nearby streets, which saved on paying parking fees for the near by car park. I found the stairs very challenging, and would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues or young children. A hand rail placed on the left side wall on leaving the bathroom i feel would be of benefit. I suggest a chair to be put in the double bedroom for somewhere to place your clothes at night, due to the room having no wardrobe or hanging space. A good base to visit Devon's coastline.
