What our customers say about their holidays

Extremely disappointed with the accomodation at Bakers Yard.
We knew it was dated from previous reviews but the foisty, damp smell and dirtiness throughout was terrible. The bedrooms were adequate and the bed comfy however the bedding did not smell freshly laundered and the pillows were flat and uncomfortable . The bedding was so old it was thinning and felt cheap. The lampshade was covered in cobwebs at the side of our bed in the back room. Leading onto the bathroomâ¦it was disgustingly dirty and mouldy. The shower screen had black mould alongside the seal and the bath seal was also black as was the grout. The tiles were cracked and broken and sharp edges were exposed alongside the bath. The wall light in the bathroom didnât work and the top of it was covered in thick dust. We had the quickest of showers each morning and had to wear our flip flops for fear of cutting our feet on the tiles/flooring. Upstairs in the living area, the cushions were stained and filthy. There were dead flies in the flyswat left on a windowsill and the cupboard fronts felt sticky with grease. Again, numerous light fittings did not work and the skirting boards were thick of dust. One morning we were awoken early by the sound of builders setting up scaffolding on next doors cottage - we were unable to get our car onto the driveway due to their Lorries blocking the access and as such ended up paying for our car to be in the public carpark overnight for two nights. Any chance of us being able to sit in the yard with our books and coffee were quickly scuppered due to the noise. No welcome hamper upon arrival; we had travelled some distance to get there and then, due to check in being at 4pm (for cleaning?? I think not!) we had been out walking. Every other holiday cottage we have ever stayed in have had welcome hampers with enough to get you through til next morningâ¦tea, coffee, wine and dog treats! There was nothing. I have tried several times throughout our stay to alert you to our complaint and have found your response lacking and uncaring. It is our first experience of using Sykes and Iâm sorry to say, we would be most reluctant to book with you again. If this is the calibre of accommodation on offer with Sykes, we will not be back. I have taken numerous photographs if you would like them although youâll be able to see them on our Trip Advisor review. I look forward to your response.

The apartment was very comfortable and in a really lovely setting with great walks from the door.
However, it did feel like the owner had not kept up with certain things. The main thing for us was that there was no docking station and we had really banked on being able to play our music via an Ipod each evening. We were told by you that the owner said that the previous people had broken it and one had been ordered but not arrived in time, however, had you let us know we could have brought our own and this would have made our stay a lot more enjoyable (this is because we eat in each night and really enjoy to have music playing whilst cooking and eating}. The dehumidifier (which it requests is left switched on) came on in the middle of the night and woke us - we didn't know what it was and had to get up to see what was happening - it could be that the previous people had turned it off and so the timing changed. The instruction folder said there was freeview TV available on AV but we could not get it to work. The DVD remote had no batteries and there were no DVDs to go with the player anyway. The HOTL response was that we 'could feel free to go out and buy some batteries' but we didn't see why we should do this and only really reported it so they could be bought for the next people staying. There was previous feedback in the reviews that the bathroom sink was blocked and very slow to drain away - they were told it would be fixed but it was still like it when we went. The handle of the freezer compartment in the fridge dropped off as soon as we tried to open it on arrival and had obviously been previously broken and just balanced back on. Apart from the lack of Ipod these were just little niggles but overall felt like a lack of customer care which did detract from our enjoyment. It was a shame because it's a fabulous setting but would put us off returning. Thank you.

We stayed at Wetherlam, following a recommendation and despite the Lakes being busy as was Easter, the large accommodation was quiet and beautiful and I can strongly recommend it for a large party:we were eight adults.
The facilities were clean and more than adequate. We cooked most days and the kitchen equipment was superb â Everything provided, multiple cups, kitchen utensils, large range cooker etc. . (As in most accommodation the knives werenât very sharp â so I always take my sharpener). The beds were extremely comfortable; there was plenty of toilets and bathing facilities for eight people. And on top of this there was an excellent games room with yet another TV and table football! This is nothing to take away from the views which were superb - over the lake below. We walked each day, despite variable weather direct from the house and had some fantastic views high up on the hills. I recommend Alcock tarn ,then on to Heron Pike if you have the energy. This hike starts just behind the house and has fantastic views over to Windermere and beyond to the sea. The only problem was with one radiator which was fixed the next day, didnât cause this much problem. I cannot recommend the property more strongly.I would definitely return. I do however have a gripe with heart of the lakes as despite taking out cancellation insurance and having to change the date due to one of our party working in the NHS, we were unable to get a rebate on the amount of money originally paid as the week we went was a lot cheaper. My advice would be to get different insurance if at all.

The property was beautifully located and very spacious and comfortable.
Bed and shower in the main bedroom were completely fab. Kitchen well equipped We were disappointed to not even have a pint of milk left for us to make tea on arrival (we stay in many properties and it seems to be a minimum standard and the last time we were up and in Ambleside in February there was a lovely collection of biscuits, milk, preserve and sourdough bread in a much more modest property) We were left with six sheets of kitchen towel, no bin bags, an inch of washing up liquid and a dishwasher with no salt or rinse aid. The loos had no hand towels. The house was very hot at times but we couldnât turn down the heaters so had to open windows which seems very wasteful Finally several days our early mornings and all access to the terrace were disrupted by the noise and presence of decorators and their machinery working in the property with an alarm going off on the cherry picker soon after 8am on a couple of mornings and a power cable being trailed across our front door step. This did spoil our holiday With such a pricey property it was really annoying to have such problems ( especially being woken early by workman noise and thinking theyâd be able to see in) in an otherwise wonderful property. Please note the workmen themselves were pleasant I have a video of the decorator alarm / noise.

We stayed at Bakers Yard Cottage for the week between Christmas and New Year.
We visit Grasmere frequently so knew where the cottage was located. There were a few pros but unfortunately more cons as listed below, not only to help the owners make improvements but also to guide future guests what to pack. The parking wasnât as issue for us. We do have a big car so we realised from the listing there was no chance weâd be able to park in the space - we parked at the car park on Red Bank Road, £40 for the week. Pros Location Comfortable beds Clean sheets Clean bath towels and plenty of them Cons No mattress protector on one of the beds Only 4 dishwasher tablets (for a weeks stay) Only two tea towels Two black bin bags Cleanliness; Cupboards were dirty on the inside and the cupboard doors sticky Top of the extractor fan dirty with cobwebs Dirty fridge seal and door Dirty dials on dishwasher Dirty crevices on the shower Shower screen is mouldy and leaks We struggled to use the Henry Hoover as all that I could find was a brush to attach to the hose. Carpet is too thick for the doors downstairs, they are very difficult to close and as a result the bottom hinge on the hall door is coming off (photo provided if required) Big damp patch on kitchen sealing (photo provided if required)
