What our customers say about their holidays
Steven - Verified booking
The Cottage is in a very good location and makes it so easy for all shops, restaurants etc.
Due to its central location and it can be noisy, although we were there at Easter bank holiday weekend. This may have influenced it but noise went on till 4am. The main issue I had with the Cottage, is that it is very small. We went as a family of two adults, two kids and a dog. The house was not big enough to accommodate us all. This was particularly evident downstairs, which is just one room. There wasnât enough seating space for us all to sit on the settee. There is a breakfast bar in this room but the stools provided, are not very comfortable. There isnât really enough space to cook, particularly if people are sat at the breakfast bar. When cooking I literally had to sit at one of the seats. The whole accommodation is extremely dark. Whilst accepting that it is a Cottage, the windows do not open in three out of four of the rooms. This makes the Cottage quite stuffy and oppressive. This is not helped by the fact you donât have control of the heating. This comes on at set times whether you need it to or not. The bedroom on the first floor is a decent size and accommodates two children. It also has storage space and a TV with DVD. There is no DVD player downstairs, nor can you stream your phone to the TV. This meant if we wanted to watch a film as a family, we had to go to the kids bedroom. The bathroom has nice facilities with the exception of the hot tap. It is a Triton hot tap that produces very little hot water. The bedroom on the second floor is contained in the roof. It does not have any room to stand up in, other than the foot of the bed. Itâs basically a bed in a room. We both found it quite difficult to get in and out of bed. The Cottage does provide safe secure parking, which is needed in Whitby. However, as described in the advert this is 5 mins away up a steep hill. Overall if there was just two of you, you could make it work. It didnât work for us as a family. Having stayed in multiple Cottages in Whitby, this was the most disappointing. Due to the issues we left a day early.

The "roadside parking" was a real issue.
We were only given some clarity on this by email on 29th September, 3 days before we were due to leave for our holiday. This email spoke of off road parking at the bottom of the steps to the row of cottages. When we arrived we found the off road parking was occupied by a deep fenced-off excavation, seemingly work in progress by the water company, and a large heap of hard core, presumably left by the water company to back fill the excavation when work is completed. All of which made it extremely difficult to park with any sense of security. This situation soured our holiday and I believe Sykes/owner should have informed us of the full facts about the condition of the off road parking, allowing us time to change the date of our visit or Sykes/owner to make alternative arrangements for parking, in what is a very tight location under normal circumstance. Also I don't understand why there is no thought given to mentioning, that due to the steps that have to be used to exit and access the cottage on each occasion, that these steps might be difficult the older person or anyone with a walking difficulty. It sounds as if we have nothing good to say about Ghyll Cottage, which is not correct. The cottage was comfortable and with great views, but this experience leads us to think twice about ever using Sykes in future.

The cottage is small and quaint and has retained lots of original features.
The pictures of the cottage in times gone by was a great feature. It has been renovated well and has modern amenities and a great kitchen/dining area, it is a small cottage but has everything we needed as a family of four. It is in a very central location, it is of note parking was an additional expense and for the week was 70.00. The owner was responsive to communication and was helpful with instructions, arrival and departure was easy and hassle free. There are a couple of issues that did impact our stay one was the sofa which is in dire need of replacement and the master bed which is also in need of a new mattress, if these two issues were rectified it would be a five star stay. A tip for Whitby is book the restaurants that have good reviews as they will be booked up and wonât accept walk ins.

This cottage is everything as described and more.
We were here in March and it was well heated and very warm and cosy. Everything at hand from tin foil to tea so no need to worry about forgetting anything. Right in the heart of Whitby with a lovely bakery next door and many pubs, shops, eateries and banks on the doorstep. A selection of beaches within a few minutes walk with amazing views and sea life, we saw a seal pup on one occasion and everywhere is dog friendly. The owner was easily contactable and the free wifi is a massive plus in the cottage. Our only worry, which didn't lead to an issue were the stairs from the top floor. They are quite steep and narrow, so we kept the lower floor lighting on overnight so avoided any stumbling to the bathroom in the night and everything worked out great. We would definitely return without question

Very comfortable cottage in a peaceful location with breathtaking views.
Friendly helpful caretaker. Very friendly area too. Rosedale Abbey is lovely and the food at 'Graze on the Green' is sublime (even for veggies!). Wonderful base for exploring. A couple of minor things: It would be useful to have a lamp in the sitting/tv area as the wall lights are quite dim, although the 'reading corner' in the dining area, with the armchair and floor standing reading lamp was really welcome. Also, as the weather was very changeable (hot for several days then suddenly cool) storage heaters aren't flexible enough as they need to be switched on the day before, so an effective plug-in heater for downstairs would be good for these situations when it doesnt warrant an open fire. In general, loved the house and would definitely book again.
