What our customers say about their holidays
Melanie - Verified booking
This property should not be let in this condition,it felt grotty, unclean and very neglected.
It really spoilt our much longed for holiday. We came with fairly low expectations as wasnât too expensive, but this was way below the worst we imagined. It was cold, damp and musty when we arrived. We found a manâs underwear left in a drawer, old food in the cupboard, bin was mouldy, the bedroom carpet didnât appear hoovered, the tumble dryer filter was blocked and water needed emptying - no battery in remote, ancient baking trays, cracks in walls not filled, dirt in the ancient washing machine, cooker old and needs replacing. The front door is an indicator of how neglected this is. Yet a few immediate and inexpensive tweaks would make this immediately better: 1) a blind, ideally vertical, in the front window is a necessity being right on the roadâ¦we blocked it half up with some cushions for some privacy. 2) a large rug on the tiled floors to make it more cosy, we resorted to using our picnic rug 3) proper fitting curtains all the same length - what an utter mess the sitting room looks because the badly hanging cheap cream curtains are different sizes and donât go to the floorâ¦a separate pole for door and window would look betterâ¦next door is an indicator of how much better it could look. 4) fill the cracks and repaint 5) replace oven trays and have matching wine glasses. Stage 2 would be more expensive and require new front door, new fitted kitchen units and appliances and new bathroom. Then either secondary glazing or better fitting window and door to obscure some of the traffic noise. Stage 1 is essential and better standard of cleaning and checking the property. Our holiday was spoilt by having to stay here, tho it did mean we spent a lot of time in the pub! Haltwhistle is a great location and there seem to plenty of other rentals, so I advise choosing somewhere else.

Cottage is beautiful and such a great location for what we wanted.
I would definitely recommend it, and happily stay again. It was clean and tidy and well maintained. The parking was a bit annoying due to packing kit daily in the car, but at no point did I struggle to find parking as there is a car park at the back of the house. If bringing a dog, just know there is no garden, to let them out in as the garden at the back of the property is owned by the neighbours. Hence I was having to walk my dog at 6 am The range master has a one and a half oven we couldn't get the cooker to work on the bottom left which meant we were left with a very small space to put stuff in the oven. The baking trays provided were rusty and need replacing Pillows have not been replaced in the main bedroom in what looks like years. It was a very uncomfortable sleep, they were flattened from wear. Although a couple of moans, they are just tiny tweaks which I'm sure the owner will sort in next to no time, as when I spoke to him he was very accommodating. Buying food was expensive there's a small Sainsburys and co-op near by, but charging corner shop prices. If cooking I would suggest bringing as much as you can to avoid overcharging. Can highly recommend the local butchers they do a great range of pies and pasties, my boys loved the large sausage rolls when we were out walking!

Bastle House is in a perfect location for all amenities.
The train station is 0.2 miles down the road. Plus, the main street has a couple of bus stops with a regular bus service. There are shops and takeaways plus a couple of chippies, one nearly opposite with a portion big enough to feed two or three! Having eaten too much there is a medical walk-in centre nearby! Best of all is the Manor House Inn 2 doors away. Great food and drink,on Tuesdays and Thursdays they have a 2 course special. The Black Bull Inn is just off the town square and worth a visit. The house itself is well equipped with 3 double bedrooms, one with en-suite. A shaving mirror and bath mat would have helped in there, plus a bed throw for the thin quilt. In the master bedroom was a large comfy bed but let down by uncomfortable bedding. Way too hot for mild nights. Also the main street was lit all night so it would be helpful if the room was fitted with a blackout blind or curtains. In the lounge the handsome 3 seater sofa was desperately uncomfortable. Furthermore, the 2 plugs located near the window in the master bedroom need to be switched on for the lounge TV to work. All in all, it is a great house in a great location and would happily stay again.

On arrival it was soon evident that the accommodation had not had a proper clean.
We were in a situation of meeting up with family (who we had not seen for months) for the week otherwise we would have left on the second day. So we cleaned as we went:- drawers, crockery, bathroom plug and overflow full of gunge, thick dust from various areas, trays, dining table, chairs, Oven was dreadful, couldn't use. There were numerous cushions and after finding dried food smeared on one, we didn't look at the rest but piled them all in a corner. The crunch came when my hand accidently slipped down the side of the sofa and discovered a large amount of hair and debris that must have been there for a long time.WE DID NOT PULL ANYTHING OUT IN THE COTTAGE OR INVESTIGATE FOR FEAR OF WHAT WE MIGHT FIND. Other items in the property required a thorough clean but we simply avoided them. The next visitors would not have many of the problems we had as we had done so much cleaning. Very disappointing stay especially as it had been booked for our 60th wedding anniversary.

A fantastic find.
The immediate local area is well served with pubs, shops and eateries. Really friendly and helpful host and locals. It is a place that is ideally situated for walking. We never needed to use our car once all week. The cottage is within rambling distance of Hadrian's Wall and a host of other destinations. The property provides a range of walking guides including 22 local routes detailed in the Haltwhistle Rings series of pamphlets. There is fantastic year round public transport provision (AD 122 bus up and down to all points on the wall) including a well served railway station on the Carlisle to Newcastle line. The cosy cottage is set back from the road and is therefore quiet and secluded, with a small front garden and drive. To the rear of the property is a sheltered terrace overlooking the owners well tended and enclosed garden. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property. This is attested to by the many repeat customers detailed in the visitor's book.
