What our customers say about their holidays
Anthea - Verified booking
Mixed reviews after a weeks stay.
Initial problem was absolutely nowhere to park, double yellow lines outside and spaces across were taken up by local residents so difficult to unload luggage etc. I wasn't too keen on leaving my car parked 2 streets away so we opted with St Erbyns carpark at £16 for 7 days, about 5 mins walk away. No problems and plenty of room. Inside the property it was definitely in need of redecoration ie painting and a good clean, stair carpet loose and very dirty, drain blocked and shower drain blocked, tissues under bed from previous guests and patio area overgrown with weeds. However after spending 2 days trying to sort it with Sykes we eventually got in touch with the owner who was very friendly and apologetic and sorted the immediate issues the very same day! Excellent customer service. He wasn't aware of the issues so he noted everything and assured us he was visiting the property ASAP to sort them. He made sure our holiday wasn't affected. The positives!! the rustic theme of the house, beautiful wood floors in the living area, a 5 mins walk to Penzance town, 15 mins walk to seafront, bedrooms were well appointed and comfortable with clean sheets and towels. Once the issues mentioned above are addressed this we would then recommend this cottage for your holiday.

Our stay at the cottage was a one of mixed views.
It did appear nice but looking closely you could see the photos were done quite a while ago. It was in need of some painting particularly downstairs and especially the stair handrail which was quite grubby. Also, the staircase carpet on one stair was exposing the gripper rod nails which was a hazard. The fridge had a unpleasant odour and was set to maximum which turned any drink or food semi frozen and bizarrely the boiler was switched off so if you wanted a bath or a shave or just wash up you couldnât (there is a âgoodâ electric shower which heats independently). We contacted Sykes cottages straight away who took two and bit days to respond (after 2 messages) with a silly response of asking if it was resolved when it was clear it wasnât as that was the first response to our messages. We were also looking forward to sitting in the courtyard garden in the morning with a coffee but it was unkept and weedy (nothing like the photos online). So all in all not great and wish I could upload photos to this review. Location to station is close enough although hilly so that would be something to advise people of and Penzance itself is a little run down. Having said that it has great transport links (train and bus) to the highly recommended St Ives and Mousehole.

Lovely flat in a great location that could be made even better with just a few small tweaks.
The entrance way could do with better signage on the main doorway to enable renters to locate easier. Also better info given to Sykes and all booking portals. The dingy entrance stairway could do with a good pressure wash and a coat of paint to make it look more appealing. The flat itself. A welcome/information pack would be helpful. Where does the rubbish go etc. Dish drainer for the sink. Better crockery, most is chipped and may be because thereâs no dish drainer, a selection of odd glasses that look as if they have come from the pub, not really what you expect on holiday. The shower. Oh gosh that was the main let down for us. Bathroom is lovely and modern but the shower is very temperamental, it either runs scolding hot ( very dangerous) or freezing cold without touching the temperature controls. Maybe itâs due to the water pressure as sometimes there was only a trickle coming from the taps? Overall the flat offers a clean and comfortable base in a great location to explore this part of Cornwall. Not sure if this flat comes with the advertised parking? Thereâs spaces to the side that seems to always be occupied by cars from neighbouring residents.

Can't really say that "Pengullyn" had the wow factor, other reviewers have indicated this.
It does, however, have virtually everything you're likely to need for a week or two in Cornwall, except egg cups. The most important thing for us was that the property has its own parking space. Which in Cornwall is a Godsend, given that we once had our legitimately parked car wrecked by a Cornish bin lorry. We were a little disappointed to find that the shower, reported has broken in August, had not been repaired. Needless to say showering proved rather challenging as a result. By the way, where was our cream tea that other previous visitors to "Pengullyn" arrived to find? Lol. Thank you for the milk nevertheless. A little tip. If you want to go into town and want to avoid the treacherous traffic on Chywoone Hill then turn right outside the side door, go down the short hill, turn right at the bottom and go through the covered arch. Immediately turn left and keep going. This will take you to the Strand and into town. A far safer route believe me! All in all we had a nice stay at "Pengullyn", and it provided a sound base to explore a beautiful part of our beloved Cornwall. Kernow Bys Vyken!

We have stayed in seven cottages marketed by Sykes in recent years and we think Walter has been the best.
It was an attractive, well-decorated building in an interesting part of Newlyn, accessed from a narrow lane (but with car park close by) and was well-equipped. The owners had generously provided us with some food and sufficient supplies of consumables such as washing up liquid, hand washing liquid, and toilet paper. The information pack was interesting, particularly on the history of the house â the current owners are the fifth generation of the family to own it. The cottage is close to the Coastal Path which passes the end of Church Street. We recommend the Hepworth Museum in St Ives, Trewidden Gardens, St Michaelâs Mount, the Newlyn Village trail and the Newlyn Filmhouse. There are good local bus services including the Mousehole bus and the Coaster bus â those provide access to the Coastal Path. We did several sections using the bus links. There is a well-equipped Co-op a short walk away, open till late. The only downside of our holiday was mud â the Coastal path between Newlyn and Lamorna had some very muddy stretches because of all the rain.
