What our customers say about their holidays

The Rousdon Estate is a fantastic place to stay.
There are good short walks around the estate with a lot of interesting and quirky buildings to look at. For longer walks, the massive plus is that the estate has its own path down to the Undercliff (about half way along) from where you can walk to Seaton or Lyme Regis. If you cross the Undercliff path the private path continues on to a private beach which was virtually deserted both times we went (although the path is quite challenging). 2, Old Home Farm itself is a very clean, airy and well-appointed house which had easily enough space and seats, etc for seven of us. The large fridge-freezer was particularly welcome as we did a lot of cooking ourselves. The house also has a nice sunny garden, front and back. We didn't have any of the problems previous guests had with showers (we've had a lot worse!) However, although it was very clean, we did have a few niggles about how the house had been left for us. First, we had asked (when booking and also by phone the week before we came) for both the beds in bedrooms 1 & 3 to be made up as superkings. We had received an email saying that this would be done but bedroom 3 was still a twin when we arrived. We had to zip-link it ourselves and luckily we had brought a spare double sheet and duvet. Second, like the previous reviewer in April we were pretty appalled to be greeted by a pile of 26 empty bottles just lying around outside the back of the house. Then we found a further 14 bottles in a food waste bin in the same location, making 40 in all. Clearly the cleaners expected that it was future guests' responsibility to dispose of their predecessors' empties. Anyway, we put them all in black sacks and put them in the orange top black bin - where all rubbish and recycling has to go - and put the bin out on Tuesday night for Wednesday collection. We found out about this in the guest book but it would be helpful if this info could be displayed more prominently. In addition, there was no outside bucket for cleaning our dog's paws after a muddy walk so we bought a Lyme Regis "Crab Bucket". Before leaving, we wrote "2, Old Home Farm" on this bucket and left it outside the back door for future dog owning guests to use, so we hope that it is still there. Finally, we would like to say that these were only minor irritations and we really enjoyed our stay at 2, Old Home Farm and on the Rousdon estate and would definitely recommend it

!!!AVOID AVOID AVOID
!!! For a property charging over £1000 for a week itâs a disgrace! Unable to open most of the windows in the upstairs bedroom, even a sign on on window suggesting â The window frames tend to swell and âstickâ Rubber hammer is useful tap frame gentlyâ no hammer in site! Other windows had âDo NOT attempt to open this window it is fragile and is being replacedâ similar message on another one of the windows with the additional message that âThis one has collapsedâ remember, over a £1000 for a week! On a hot June night the combination of this and the thick winter duvet it was impossible to get a decent nights sleep. No door on en-suite toilet which is cosy so while youâre sat there in all your glory most of the other properties are looking right at you so shut the blinds and made it dark and even more miserable. Cobwebs and just a general feel of being dirty. Marks on the floor where drinks had been spilt and left, Dead flies and insects on most flat surfaces and the downstairs toilet seat was hanging off. Would be better off listed as an air bnb as in the wardrobe in the master bedroom the top shelf was full of the owners things and the bottom half filled with a couple of large ikea bags full of the ownerâs possessions, ok I will use the drawers instead, handle fell off. Overlooked from every angle and for a dog friendly cottage the neighbours didnât seem too happy about this. We booked a week and lasted 2 nights before booking another cottage with a different company as Sykes were no help. Spoke to Sykes after the holiday who had no interest in resolving the issues we had, told us it was up to us to take it up with the owner directly, ok can I have the owners details to speak to them? No because of gdpr, which is fair enough. Took nearly a month and a threat of taking Sykes or the owners to a small claims court and magically got a £300 refund for our ruined holiday. We also got a £81 refund from the cleaning company who had clearly done the minimum amount of cleaning in the cottage. Avoid this cottage avoid Sykes and you will have a lovely holiday we suggest using www.originalcottages.co.uk friendly staff who sorted us with another cottage in Dorset which saved our holiday!

Beautiful building in beautiful surroundings.
Lots and lots of character. The walks around the estate are beautiful with some glorious views, and itâs very close location to Lyme Regis was a definite plus. We tried to walk down to the beach but found that the steps were very steep and not suitable for our large dog. The interior and furnishings were all getting a bit tired, and although it was clean, I did feel it could have been cleaner. We didnât use the steam room as it could have done with a good bleaching and the grouting between the tiles closer to the ground in the downstairs loo had black mould on them. The bed, although absolutely huge, was very uncomfortable, and the beams in the lounge were dusty and cobwebby (resulting in me having a spider hit me in the face from the ceiling while relaxing one evening, and therefore keeping an eye on the ceiling for the rest of my stay!) I appreciate the ceilings are very high! The hallway has the remains of a small fireplace which has wooden wine boxes stacked in it. The top of these boxes were covered in bird droppings, easily accessible to small children or animals which I didnât think was very hygienic. A chimney balloon would quickly rectify this. We were contacted by Lyme Bay Holidays during the first week to see if we wanted a change of linens at the first weekend as we were staying for two. I was happy to change the bedding so it was agreed we would leave the used bedding etc to be picked up and the fresh linen left on the Saturday. This wasnât done which resulted in us having to take back all of the now damp bedding which had been screwed up in a bag with the damp towels, dry them on radiators and put them back on the bed! On contacting Lyme bay Holidays on the Monday they delivered more, but all the wrong size! They did deliver some more the following day but by then just couldnât be bothered to rechange them! Finally, on a very minor note, in many years of self catering cottage hire, this was the first one ever that had no condiments at all, and not even a salt and pepper shaker that I could find!

We've visited several times before and absolutely love Watersplash - it's a perfect retreat with bags of character even when the weather lets us down, and the location is idyllic.
But there were issues on this occasion. We'd complained before about the razor sharp edges on the drawer handles especially in the kitchen after slicing my finger on one last year, but no-one has done anything about it. The quality of washing up by previous occupants was poor - dirty saucepans (I had to rush out to buy scouring pads) and food stuck to cutlery and plates and there was an unpleasant smell in the kitchen which took days to clear. The bin bags had all bio-degraded so we had an issue putting out the rubbish. The garden furniture, which was broken and dangerous last year, has been removed but not replaced. So no chance of breakfast at the garden table. The decking was terribly slippery when it rained and the garden needs a tidy up. We love the cottage and feel very sad when standards start to slip. It's not at all cheap (especially as only 2 of us) and I stress that these are small issues but do need attention. We don't want to complain when we're on holiday - it sours something we've been looking forward to for so long but hope that polite feedback will now be acted on. If photos show garden furniture it should be available, even in March. On the plus side, cleaning was generally to a high standard - we met the cleaner and she was delightful - a credit to the company. The bedroom is super-comfortable and the heating (in a very cold wet week) was blissfully reliable. So, in spite of a few gripes, a great little place to stay.

On arrival we were met with a damp smell in the living room, settee felt damp, also didnât look the cleanest or comfiest and arm covers were dirty.
You could see the damp in the wall leading to the kitchen. Itâs a good job weather was beautiful and we spent most of our time out, the living room furniture didnât really cater for 4 people to sit in comfort!. The kitchen was in need of a face lift, dishwasher was dirty and rusty, we had to wash everything before we could use it. The garden needed attention with some dog poo left behind. We found cobwebs on the kitchen walls above the cooker and between the dresser and cupboard. The blind in one of the bedrooms had actually come down and was left on the windowsill, Lyme Bay offered to come and put it back up but as we were there for only 3 days we had our time planned and didnât want to have to wait in for them to do it. Upstairs was acceptable our double bedroom had a nice comfy bed although Iâm not sure if the bedding was supposed to be white as they looked discoloured. The photos were misleading on the website as the property looks pristine in them, though in reality this isnât the case, website definitely needs updating. Disappointed that we didnât receive a call back from Lyme Bay management after our concerns had been highlighted, we have booked numerous times with this company and never had a problem before.
