Lake District Cottages for Short Breaks

Inspiring the colourful tales of Beatrix Potter and the elegant poems of William Wordsworth, the beauty of Lake District has acted as a muse for many. One of the most popular places for staycations in the country, a spur-of-the-moment trip in this dramatic landscape could be just what the doctor ordered.

Reasons to visit the Lake District

Walking

Walking in the Lake District is one of the most popular activities for visitors, with England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, longest lake, Lake Windermere and of course, the Lake District National Park itself spanning 912 square miles of fells, mountains, streams and lakes. Choose from our wide variety of accommodation in the Lake District. Whether you are looking for a cosy family cottage or a converted farmhouse with a group of friends, we have the place to make your walking holiday in the Lake District as perfect as the view from the top of Scafell Pike.

Lake Windermere

This stunningly colossal lake is the longest in England, supporting various activities from sailing and kayaks to motorboat hire, the Lakes Distillery and, of course, the World of Beatrix Potter, which is ideal for children and adults alike. The area around Windermere is buzzing with activities for all ages, perfect for an action-packed family getaway. Enjoy a Lake District holiday with us and feel confident you are dealing with professionally managed properties and a world-class customer service team. Our blend of choice, value and exclusive member discounts makes it easy to book your last minute break in the Lakes.

Where to stay in the Lake District

The primary tourist hotspot is Lake Windermere. However, there are many different market towns and villages to visit in the Lake District, each having its own attractions.

Keswick offers beautiful views of Lake Derwentwater, with neolithic stone circles, welcoming pubs, and a theatre overlooking Lake Derwentwater.

Ambleside is great for historians and adventurers; there is a Roman fort, a waterfall, and a short drive away is Go Ape, an excellent adventure for the kids.

Cartmel is fantastic for foodies, famous for its sticky toffee pudding and two Michelin star restaurant, L'Enclume.

• Seatoller will appeal to hikers because of its premium starting position for a climb up to the summit of Scafell Pike. There are also caving opportunities nearby, where you can explore caverns and old mines.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Michael - Verified booking

We enjoyed a fabulous week in Waterside cottage, the weather was kind to us and we enjoyed the hospitality of the Ratty Arms.

There is also a good restaurant opposite the cottage and the Bryer Cafe is excellent. Ravenglass is a jewel of a town/village in Cumbria with walks straight from the door. The views from the windows are memorable, especially first and last light. The cottage has good heating complimented by a fabulous logburner for those cosy nights in. I have only awarded Waterside cottage four stars as there is room for improvement eg:- I would change the latch on the door of the master bedroom as it's very noisy, this easily wakes up a light sleeper. I would change the toilets as I didn't like how they flushed, the toilet bowl fills up with water displaying it's contents before emptying. If a safety fence was fitted to the roof of the downstairs bedroom it would make an excellent sun terrace. Minor points I know but as the cottage commands a premium price I feel it just falls short of five stars. ****Having said all that, we would not hesitate in booking it again.**** We have been visiting the Lakes twice a year for more than twenty years and have only returned to one property (Seaside cottage at Coulderton), so Waterside cottage is on a short list of just two cottages that we would book again. Thank you Sarah and John for providing such a delightful holiday cottage in a superb location, it was clean, quiet and very comfortable. Mike & Marion

We enjoyed our stay at The Old Chapel.

Lots of interesting places to visit in the area. We did a couple of local walks from the cottage trying to avoid the main road. Second Bedroom en-suite very cramped and the sink plug did not work so sink would not hold water. Great idea having a website with all the instruction manuals for the appliances however I think other information could be added including local information like nearest shops, doctors, hospital, takeaways, places to visit as we did not find this information in the cottage, most owners seem to provide this. The Sun Inn pub is within easy walking distance, they were friendly and we enjoyed a delicious Sunday lunch. We only found out on the last day that the TV had a Amazon Video account setup, this would have been useful to have known at the beginning of our stay Again something that could easily be added to the https://www.lakeschapel.co.uk/ website. Overall we were impressed with the cottage and the area. We would like to return again sometime.

There's no doubt that Waterside is an amazing place to stay.

It is fantastic to watch the tides and to see the sun and moon set over the estuary and sand dunes. When the tide is really high, as it was when we were there, it's wonderful to watch shoals of fish dart around the grass and rocks. The house is stylishly decorated. The only down sides were that the loo didn't flush very well and the garden is overlooked and tatty and is the location for the bins. We weren't inspired to sit there. There is a military firing range near to the property. This didn't cause any problems whilst we were there but it would be useful to mention this on the listing as I found out a few days beforehand and was really anxious in the days leading up to the holiday as we always choose somewhere that is really quiet. So overall Waterside is a wonderful place to stay but very much overpriced compared to other cottages we've stayed in with Sykes.

What an amazing property in such a stunning village!

We were absolutely delighted by everything to do with Waterside during our stay - the views from the picture windows were incredible in sunny or rainy conditions, the property was immaculately clean, and we were astounded by attention to detail. All the beds were incredibly comfortable, and we could sit on the sofas looking out of the windows all day. The kitchen had every utensil and piece of crockery that you could need, and the owners had thought of everything from dishwasher tablets to locally sourced soaps at each sink. Waterside exceeded our expectations and we fell completely in love with the property and the village of Ravenglass, so much so that our children cried when we had to leave! Thank you, Sarah and John - your communication was fantastic throughout our entire stay, and your efforts enabled us to create such beautiful memories. We will absolutely be back!

This is the sectime we have stayed at MyraView this year and the third time on total.

What a lovely place, away from it all but only 5 min8from the main road and about 10 minutes from Cartmel. The property is quirky . We love it. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped. A great coffee machine, it made excellent coffee but we couldn't work out how to get the attached milk frother to work. There is also plenty of tea towels, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets and salt and pepper provided. Lots of towels in the bedrooms too. The beds are very comfy. The storage heaters taking a bit of getting used to, but soon sorted. Also thank you for the welcome gift package too. A simple walk if you don't want to drive is to cross the main road (A590) signposted Staveley and turn left, there are two easy safe walks to Newby Bridge. We highly recommend this lovely cottage. Thank you Tony & Chrissie
