We had a lovely time at Combe Cottage.

It is full of character, warm and cosy. Just to deal quickly with one (rather silly IMO) criticism that some others have made - It is true that the stairs are very steep, and some floors a little bit uneven, but this is an ancient Cotswold stone cottage and that is all part of the charm for me. It isn't one of those houses which has been rendered characterless. Immaculately clean and a lovely modern bathroom and kitchen. The wifi worked really well and the smart TV has netflix etc. The heating was great as was the little solid fuel stove - both important as we visited in November. Very quiet inside the cottage. The cottage is raised up behind the London Road (not right on the road) which leads into Stroud in one direction and Cirencester in the other, so there is some road noise from the garden, but you cannot hear that at all inside and it makes getting to everywhere you want to go to very easy. And in the evenings and at weekends there isn't much at all anyway. Getting in and out of a property easily is not always a given round here where you can be in really narrow little roads and find your car blocked in when you try to leave - I know this as I'm from the area. Having the parking space outside the cottage and the easy access to the London road was actually a plus. Walk up behind the house straight into the lovely villages of Thrupp and Chalford. There is a shop just round the corner. Supermarkets nearby - a five minute drive. Walk down the hill to walk along the canal which is a great walk in either direction and a five minute drive in pretty much any direction takes you to all the beautiful places around Stroud where you can walk for miles and enjoy the amazing views. Stroud is a lively town, full of great coffee shops and interesting independent shops. Cirencester is lovely. I cannot enumerate all the lovely villages and great country pubs serving good food, but they are all around Stroud. The valleys and hills of Stroud are some of the loveliest in the country. The cottage was so easy to live in, Andy the owner responded immediately to any queries, was really kind and flexible - and let us bring our dogs who also loved it. We will definitely visit again.

A wonderful family three days was spent by us at Arlington Mill.

(There were ten of us). It is an amazing building and is just right for a large family group. There is so much space that everyone was satisfied with their own en suite accommodation. We ate in on two nights, preparing huge banquets in the massive and well-equipped kitchen (two freezers and two fridges!). The Catherine Wheel Inn is a stone's throw up the road and did us proud on one evening. This mill is an amazing place and there is so much to see in the village and surrounding area. It is a delightful part of the Cotswolds. Just one or two minor gripes. When using previous rented accommodation we have usually had a TV set in the bedrooms. Arlington Mill does not, though we were probably too tired to bother, anyway! The TV in the lounge appears only to receive programmes via Sky as Freeview failed to pick up any signal. The soundbar failed to switch on and is very precariously attached to the set. I am familiar with the model and it seemed to be inverted? We tried everything to get it into action, but it seemed dead. We brought DVD's with us for the grandchildren but were unable to use them as the player was not connected to the set and the leads appeared to be missing. The heating system is quite complex and not to be messed with! The timer appeared to be incorrectly set though we were frightened to fiddle with it and left it well alone! In leaving it as it was the heating seemed to come on very late in the evening and hardly at all in the morning when we were getting up. The master bedroom, however, was always warm. As a result, we had to purchase heaps of logs and used the very efficient log burner to heat the dinning and associated lounge area where we spent most of our time. These are only minor gripes about a holiday let which is second to none. It certainly has the 'wow factor' and is well worth the money. Congratulations to the owners who have done a great restoration job on what is a wonderful old building of some significance.

Absolutely brilliant place to stay as a base to explore the south of the Cotswolds.

Peter met us and our 2 dogs on arrival and was very informative about the place, history and area and we met he's fabulous dog too. The place is huge and has everything you need. The games room was particulary great at night. I can understand the decor isn't to everyone's taste but we loved it and all the quirks, can see all the Cuban influences everywhere. The barn is on a farm and after seeing other reviews not happy with the surrounding tractors etc, I have to say "what did you expect?". There are vehicles and farm equipment around but it doesn't affect anything and just adds to the authenticity of the area. There is a bbq / pizza oven area across the road in some woodlands which was nice but we didn't use these facilties. Only thing to mention for others with dogs is that there is no secure garden area to let your dogs off, this didn't bother us though as we explored all day and only came back in the evening to relax and sleep. If you were travelling here with dogs with the intention of mostly staying in the barn I'd say maybe it isn't for you (mostly due to no secure garden) as it's quite secluded and although you could walk to the nearest pub it's a few miles away. (Fine with us, we drove to a different pub each night). But as a base to spend the day exploring and then coming back to later on its 10/10, highly recommend :D Would happily return with our dogs in the future.

It was a treat to stay at Combe Cottage; It's characterful with a real feeling of history, complemented by beautiful décor and proper solid furniture, but it has plenty of modern comforts.

The small kitchen is well equipped with an efficient induction hob. The multi-fuel burner gave added warmth and cosiness to the living room. The house is close to the A419, but we could only hear traffic from the kitchen and the eaves bedroom, and it wasn’t a big issue. Its location, in fact, is a boon: from the bottom of the road are regular buses into Stroud – a short journey and contactless payment – and Cirencester. We walked the couple of miles into Stroud along the canal - scenic, historic, and with kingfishers! - and caught the bus back. We appreciated being able to walk to local amenities on pavement, i.e. no leaping into hedges to avoid being mown down by cars. The Ship Inn, a lovely pub with excellent food, is just a few minutes’ walk, and just half a mile away is the very popular Stroud Brewery taproom, offering a wide choice of delicious ales, and lots of food options. Just to nitpick, I didn’t like the plastic lawn; they’re not good for the environment. But aside from this quibble, we would be very happy to stay here again.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at October Cottage.

Whilst this is, as previously stated, a compact cottage it was perfect for myself, husband, teenager and small dog. This really is a home away from home with everything you’ll need to enjoy your stay including comfy beds, usual mod cons and and a decent sized shower with slate floors and rugs. Hilary was a delight and very helpful without compromising our privacy. We arrived to fruit cake and wine, simply perfect. The cottage is perfectly situated for surrounding walks and attractions of the Cotswolds and the canal walk via Lavender cafe for amazing cake supplies is a must. Follow the canal for a pub lunch at the Daneway Inn before the hour or so long stroll back to Chalford! Although chapel cottage rental next door was occupied it may as well have been empty and certainly didn’t affect our stay! All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the charming October cottage which is a must for those seeking a perfectly chilled trip to the Cotswolds.
