Captivating Broughton-in-furness Cottage sleeping up to 6 guests

This holiday property is situated in the heart of the historic, 11th-century village of Broughton-in-Furness, which is full of old world charm and is the gateway to the beautiful Duddon Valley. S18365 is a beautiful, 400-year-old, Grade II listed, 1672 coaching inn which features a light and airy sitting room with open fire, a well-equipped kitchen, three lovely bedrooms, one en-suite, and a spacious bathroom. Outside, it benefits from a small garden area accessed from the back door. Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water.

There is much to please the visitor, including a pretty, cobbled square, complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells.

Close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of the western lakes. Take a trip to the lovely Langdales, Dunnerdale and Ulpha, which offer some challenging high level treks, along with many low level paths and trails over moorland. In just 8 miles, enjoy a pleasant drive west, which takes visitors past the Coniston Mountain Range to Coniston Water. Here, explore the lake shore, or from the village hire a boat. Finally, for a great day out, head north towards Ravenglass and Muncaster Castle. This property is perfectly placed for activities such as watersports, horse riding, fishing and cycling. Ulverston is just 10 miles, with Laurel and Hardy Museum. Village shops, pubs and restaurant within 100 yards.

S18365 (LP8) is directly in front of The Little Griffin (LUW) and can be booked together to accommodate up to 10 guests.

"Love the village of Broughton in Furness, it has everything you need, great local bakers, butchers, grocers, PO and 3 super pubs. Cottage is conveniently located right in the centre of the village, is lovely and warm and cosy with plenty of space and character."
    Tony – 28 Sep 2018
"This was a return visit, which indicates our very positive experience in this cottage. Facilities are well above average. It is spacious, comfortable and very tastefully furnished with antiques. The central location in Broughton means that there are excellent pubs and shops within 200 yards. On the edge of the Lakes National Park but close to beautiful Dunnerdale and within easy driving distance of Coniston, Eskdale and Wasdale. The price was much higher than last year but we felt it was well worth it."
    Craig – 17 Aug 2018
"Fabulous old cottage steeped in history with period furnishing, tons of character and with lots of room to relax. A great location to explore the lakes and West Cumbria.Only a couple of minor issues; Mobile signal is non existent within the thick cottage walls, although we were able to make calls from the upstairs front window seat, however the BT WiFi was great for messenger calls. The log fire in the lounge, although lovely & warming emits some smoke into the lounge, even with doors/windows open to create draft. The grate does not sit fully into the redesigned fireplace which is most likely the cause. These did not spoil our enjoyment and the family had a wonderful time in this lovely cottage."
    Andy – 18 May 2018
"Fantastic stay. Lovely cottage in a nice little village. There's very little in the village, but the pubs are great and it's a good location to get to supermarkets or into the heart of the lakes if you want. Equipment in the cottage was all spot on. Would definitely stay again!"
    Rachel – 13 Apr 2018
"Lovely home from home in a central village location which retains its country charm and privacy. Quirky and historic yet all the modern amenities you need it is comfortable and welcoming. Try the Old Kings Head and the Black Cock Inn for meals but you’ll need to book. Shop at Melville Tyson’s butcher and grocers and the Village Bakery. All within a stone’s throw of S18365. We will be back!"
    Howars – 12 Mar 2018
"Had a great time . Ideal for a family get together"
    lisa – 4 Jan 2018
"Outstanding cottage and location. Loved the whole experience."
    Sally – 27 Oct 2017
"Loved the cottage, usually like to rent cottages in the middle of nowhere but really liked being in a small village, not at all touristy but with great local shops (butcher, baker, greengrocer, post office) and 4 great pubs! Cottage lovely and warm which was important as we had a lot of rain (Storm Brian!)"
    Grahams – 20 Oct 2017
"Truly lovely cottage in a great little village. The property is full of character, very comfortable, superbly furnished, and has clearly been a well loved family home. Broughton in Furness is a hidden gem, it has everything you need - well stocked local shop/greengrocer/butcher, 3 pubs, a restaurant, and a fish and chip van once a week, not to mention friendly and welcoming locals. Some lovely walks from the village and 30/40min drive from Coniston/ Hawkshed/Ambleside/Windermere. Perfect!"
    Tony – 29 Sep 2017
"This is the best Lakes cottage I have stayed in. The owners' second home, it really feels like a home: spacious, warm. comfortable, furnished with some fine antique pieces of mainly oak furniture, many interesting pictures on the walls. The dining room is spacious and elegant. The sitting room (and additional 'snug') thoroughly comfortable. All three bedrooms have character, good wardrobes, plenty of space - one with a good en-suite shower room, the others sharing a vast, well equipped bathroom. The location is excellent - two good pubs within 100 yards, also splendid local baker (with cafe), grocer/greengrocer, butcher and post office all within 100 yards, yet within a peaceful village that the word seems to have passed by. The Duddon Valley is a beautiful yet relatively neglected part of the Lakes, whilst Coniston is only 20 minutes away."
    Nick – 15 Sep 2017
"Disappointed garden was so small and not enclosed.Windows and frontage looks run down.Interior full of character and we got to really enjoy it."
    Robert – 16 Jun 2017
"The only thing we could say against our stay was, it wasn't long enough. S18365 was a beautiful and welcoming home away from home, it was grandly furnished, well kept and stocked with all necessities. The locals were very friendly and inviting and the food at The Black Cock Inn exceptional, along with its staff. It was also ideal for the dog as there were walks on the doorstep with fantastic views. We will definitely be returning to the same area, hopefully staying again at S18365 if it's available."
    Caroline – 2 Jun 2017
"Great place to stay and use as a base to travel to Barrow for work. Broughton is a beautiful village."
    Nush – 29 May 2017
"This cottage exceeded all expectations. You can just spend time exploring all the decor and trinkets around this 17th century marvel. The open fire was probably my favourite thing and the kitchen is equipped with everything you could possibly need. The locals in the village were incredibly friendly and helpful, and Broughton-In-Furness makes the perfect base to explore the rest of Cumbria. Would highly recommend!"
    Craig – 28 Apr 2017
"We enjoyed the house which was large with loads of character. The village has all the amenities needed, with real ale pubs, butcher, backery and grocers selling high quality produce. Some good walks as well!"
    Darren – 14 Apr 2017
"Lovely break in a lovely cottage in a lovely village - a well needed break from the usual pace of life."
    Maxine – 7 Apr 2017
"Lovely house mixes old world charm and modern facilities very well. Nice village, friendly locals would recommend the black smiths arms just outside village for a meal would book as not a big place . Would book again."
    Sara – 4 Jan 2017
"A truly lovely cottage in the centre of a wonderful friendly village. Decorated and furnished true to the age of the property. Only thing I would say is that it could have done with a list of where things were "hidden" in the property, 2 days in we found a fridge freezer in a small room off the hall😂 Would love to go back!!"
    Jerri – 28 Dec 2016
"S18365 was a cozy, welcome home for the Christmas week set in the heart of the village with fantastic amenities on the doorstep. The house was spacious enough for six adults to be spread out and provided equipment for us to prepare and serve wonderful meals including Christmas lunch at the large dining table. The extra fridge was very handy, as was the washer and dryer. The decor is traditional, yet with a modern kitchen and wonderful new house bathroom (the shower was terrific). Broughton-in-Furness has a fabulous village shop, butchers (run by the same family I believe), a great restaurant and some wonderful pubs - our favourite was the Manor Arms. Whilst not right in the heart of the Lake District, local walks were great and we enjoyed our stay very much. Highly recommended"
"Great holiday in a very spacious, comfortable cottage with excellent local shops. Walks from the door leading to a disused railway track which was very buggy friendly and lakes for a swim for the dog! Big fells within easy reach, plus a fantastic gorge walk, and a long deserted beach at Silecroft. Good pubs and eating places."
"Lovely old cottage and very clean and comfortable. Great friendly village and good base to get to other places without being busy. Hooks in the back room for drying wet walking gear would be useful. Thank you."
"Lovely cottage, in period but given modern upgrades with its fantastically equipped kitchen and bathroom."
"it was a really nice cottage and most comfortable. the location was easy to find and the owner had left us a box of chocs and bottle of wine for Christmas . we were only three as my sister had taken lii before we went so it did make it expensive but the property was beautiful and well equipped . the weather was not very good but that is nothing to do with the property just meant we spent more time in the house. it was cosy and the log fire was so warming on the cold days."

"Torrents of rain washed out the roads during our visit to the Lake District, but we were warm and cosy next to the fire in S18365, with an excellent butcher and grocer across the way and 3 lovely pubs nearby. The home is large, clean and well equipped - and located in a truly friendly community."
"Great cosy cottage ,particularly for a wet Autumn w/e. Very spacious ,especially the lounge with its open fire.Excellent drinking pub 100yds one way and eating pub100 yds in the other direction."
"Great base for the Coniston trail run and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Beautiful cottage."
"Fantastic cottage, well equipped and very comfortable"
"A very nice cottage in a splendid village. We were lucky with the weather and our stay was very relaxing. Minor issues with the electrics (we left the owner a note outlining what needed to be done) but did not mar our holiday at all."
"S18365 is a fantastic place to stay. The cottage was very good and I enjoyed cooking in the litchen on the big range."
"One of the best cottages we have stayed in. Spacious, comfortable and full of character. Broughton in Furness is a lovely little town, very well located for visiting the Lake District and the beautiful Duddon Valley. Good walking straight from the door. Highly recommended."
"Excellent house in good position. Rubbish bin disapeard half way through. Could do with better hover lighter and able to do stairs."
"lovely house, full of character and a fantastic location"
"We had a lovely week in this well equiped cosy cottage. The town is very nice with excellent pubs and local shops. The property is well located for exploring the Lake District."
"Although this is a beautiful period house with stunning antique furniture and we all had a great holiday, there were however a few small misgivings:1. The inclusion of a clothes drier within the house would not go amiss.2. The oven could really do with a decent deep clean. This we noticed had been commented upon by previous holiday makers in the guest book. Also the instructions for use provided in the folder was for a different oven.3. The second double bedroom has no drawer space though there are 2 cupboards for hanging clothes. My sister went to put tops, etc. on a shelf within one of the cupboards and here hand came away filthy, she had to wash the shelf before using for storage.4.The small ensuite shower room really is small. The toilet and wash hand area has a steep sloping ceiling which at only 5ft 1in even someone as small as myself could not stand up in, there is a stool provided at the sink area but I had to sit down every time I washed my hands. I was also the only one out of the four adults who could comfortably use the shower. This I feel should be made clear in the brochure, not sufficient to say 'small ensuite'.5. The furnishings are beautiful but require a decent dusting not just superficial, we found thick dust almost in every room. From the above you may not think we enjoyed our holiday, to the contrary we had a wonderful time and the location is good for travelling around, but this beautifully old house requires some decent TLC."
"Lovely period house, which would have been there while Wordsworth was a boy (before then, actually). Quirky, so maybe not for everyone. Stags head and fox head on walls might put some off. All mod cons, just remember to duck under the beams in the ensuite"
"Excellent. Great for the whole family who ranged from 3 to 63."

"Found the property to be a good size. Group of four adults and two children. Good location for the South West lakes. Couldn’t see any information as to recycling or waste disposal. Please accept our apologies as we left empty bottles in property, as unsure what to do with then. Other than that will gladly rent property again. Oct 2012."
