Holiday Cottages In Helston

The lovely town of Helston can be found to the north of the Lizard Peninsula. It is thought to be the second oldest town in Cornwall and is a great base to enjoy this corner of the country. Whether you travel with friends or family, there are lovely holiday cottages for you here.

Helston is graced with miles of lush countryside, beautiful winding lanes and leaves guests only a short trip from the coast. The stunning beaches and coves of the Lizard Peninsula are within easy reach, as are other Cornish gems. From here you can enjoy day trips to the Seal Sanctuary, Flambards Theme Park and St Michael's Mount. The much loved South West Coast Path can be picked up from the nearby town of Porthleven and will allow you to explore the coast in either direction.

What our customers say about their holidays

First lets start with the negative.

Not all Sykes properties have a full maintenance agreement in place, and like this one have a cleaning only agreement. So if there are any issues you are basically are stuck with it since neither the owner or Sykes will attempt a resolution of the problem. At this property the hob does not work, as the contact number is only for the cleaning they were not in a position to help, when I phoned Sykes they left messages for the owner but they did not respond. As a result we only had an oven and microwave all week, meaning we were forced to eat out more than we wished. The cleanliness left something to be desired, as two large bin liners of rubbish were left outside on arrival for us to dispose of, and the toilet and bathroom stunk of cigarette smoke. A pity really as this with a little effort from the owner could be a 5 star rating. The internet is BT so the strength is top notch. There is a lovely TV with Amazon Prime which can be viewed in the lounge and bedroom. The holiday Park itself is well maintained and the location is perfect, there is so much to see and do on the Lizard peninsula you wont need or want to venture more than a few miles. It is worth mentioning the property has a coin meter for electricity. We were concerned it had only £10 on it, but we need not have been concerned, as believe it or not at the end of the week there was still over £2 worth on the meter. In conclusion more input from the owner required to ensure all amenities particularly the hob are serviceable and the property is properly cleaned between lets, but well equipped, reasonably comfortable in an absolutely fantastic location

    Immaculately maintained, tiny characterful property.

The Old Stable had everything we needed for a comfortable week away, although I would not think a longer stay would be practicable owing to the basic cooking facilities (a portable two ring electric hob and microwave) and just a tumble drier meaning handwashing lighter items of clothing, finding a laundrette or bringing lots of stuff. We appreciated the good quality tea, coffee bags and biscuits which are the hallmark of a thoughtful and welcoming host. Towels and tea towels are provided but bring your own beach towels. The bed on its little gallery is comfortable but we found moving the rolling steps to and fro in order to cook then wash up a bit of a faff, be aware they are quite heavy with steel handrails and glass panels. We knew about this arrangement, and it wouldn't put us off staying here again. No outside space of course, which we also knew about, but the quiet beach is adjacent and is one of our favourites on the Lizard. The Five Pilchards pub, which in the past has done good pub food, has closed down and is for sale but we had a great meal at the beach café next door. I know people rave about the Fat Apples café just up the lane but every time we went past we had just missed it being open. It shuts promptly at 5 pm. Our dog enjoyed staying here and we were glad she couldn't get up the steep steps and attempt to climb onto the bed to find us, which she sometimes does in an unfamiliar house. She had to stay in her own dog bed. She knew where we were and could see us so she was content. This was a definite plus for us.

A lovely place to stay in Cornwall.

Situated in very rural countryside and close to both coasts (approx 15 mins). The layout of the property is nice; all on one level (apart from a couple of separate small steps) so very accessible. Cosy lounge and log burner (could do with clarity on log supply - is it limited or as needed?) - we had one refill of logs but were left without on our last night. Lovely kitchen diner which was well equipped. Outside is enclosed once the gates are shut which meant we could let the dogs out without any worry. The wire on the gates could do with replacing as there’s quite a few rusty ends sticking out at the latch end. The review has only three stars solely because the double bedroom is damp (the rest of the property is really nice). When we arrived the room smelled damp and musty and the smell didn’t really dissipate during our stay. We found that anything in contact with the walls at the back of the room got wet (suitcase and dog crate / dog bedding) and the bed itself felt slightly damp. This was only evident in this one room but obviously impacts on your stay being one of the main rooms you use. The bathroom needs a bit of tlc - some cracked and / or missing tiles but everything works well. The information pack could also do with a bit of an update / tidy up. Would we stay here again? Yes if we knew the bedroom damp had been resolved.

We loved the cottage, the decor, the facilities: that big bath downstairs, good kitchen, shower, telly, garden, fairly close to the sea, well insulated, but having extra heaters, the whole feel of the place!

A couple of little niggles: the washing machine smelled of fungi - I did a hot wash in it after, so hopefully sorted, might need a wash with some vinegary water. The drying machine came in handy after a rainy day! What is nothing to do with the cottage: narrow roads, often single, so a bit stressful driving, but mostly ok, but drivers to be aware. Would be useful to have some more information about: local shops, how to turn on the hot water for the bath (that it needs about an hour, otherwise switch in cupboard by washing machine), we figured out everything else. Tv worked well, and loved the safe and big garden (needs mulching and feeding with organic matter in the autumn, but lovely). Extra bonus to have a freezer as well (we left a frozen chips behind for somebody :D), and left a couple of blue, white and gold plates (they are old, but hope could be used in the decorations). Didn't dare to touch the nice Willeroy Bochs ones, but loved looking at them, the others were great to use and pretty, the whole place has a lovely atmosphere. We were very lucky to have had it for a better price, apart from the long journey from the Midlands, would love to be back someday. Also a great base for visiting several lovely places around. Thank you!!!

The water in the bath was very slow to run out when you took a shower due to the mechanical plug hardly opening, so that you were standing in a couple of inches of water by the time you finished.

The handle on the shower screen was also loose. My only other criticism is that the bath towels were far too small. You should be able to comfortably wrap a bath towel around your waist (I’m 38 inch). These were child sizes. Some may think I’m picky; just my opinion! Other than these minor points, the cottage was fine, with a good view from the sun room, was centrally heated, had a log burner (which we didn’t use), had a comfortable bed and a well equipped kitchen. TV and Wi-Fi internet were ok, and TV in the bedroom was a bonus. We were able to park right outside which was great. We were informed by Sykes cottages that the owners would meet us on arrival at 5pm to give us the keys. This wasn’t the case. On arrival the key was just left in the outside door lock, for us to let ourselves in. As we left at 4.30am on our last day, we never met or had any dealings with the owners. The cost of the cottage for the week was good value for the time of year (mid Feb), and it is well placed for visiting Hayle, Helston, St Ives, Penzance and the surrounding areas. If asked would I stay there again, the answer would be ‘yes’.
