We went to dartmouth on Monday 25 th September we arrived about half 12 in the afternoon we got the key to the cottage of coast and country cottages I asked about parking and they said it doesn't provide parking you we would have to take the car down to the car park that is 5 pound a day and get a bus back up it does not say anything about this in description on the sykes website site it says there is put side parking provided for the next 5 days thats what we had to do and we had a 2 year old aswel we got into the cottage and and the stairs in the cottages are like death trap epically with a 2 year he nearly fell down them as he was coming out the living room as the corner of the stairs was right there as you come out very dangerous when you have a child who doesn't under stand we rang the coast and contry cottages to see if they can provide a stair gate as there wasnt one in the cottage they come that day with a brand new one we had to fit it are selves with no screw driver because there wasn't one in the cottage the TV down stairs doesn't work because there is no signal both TV remotes don't work for the TVs they work when they felt like we even changes the battery's on them there was a dvd player that worked but didn't have a remote with blinds where very dirty in the kitchen and the lighting in the dinning room was very dull bed was comfy in the main room but had a tiny TV on the wall next to bed silly place to put it and we had to but are little boy stairs in the bed with us I couldn't sleep the hole five days I was there in case he got out and fell down the stairs I wouldn't recommend it to older people as there is a lot a lot of steps leading up to the cottage it does say this on the sykes website tho that didn't really bother us but to be honest we didn't really enjoy are stay there I couldn't wait to come home on Saturday we gave the key in on sat at 10 and I spoke to girls and just said inwant really happy about the stairs in the cottages and parking and she was very rude and said what else do you want me to do I have have helped you with the stairs what is thr problem I didn't really like her attitude to be honest we told her that we had to screw the stairs gate I she was like to you did what why have you done that with a raised voice I said what else did you want us to do she said I never give you that gate I gave you a screw in one I explained that she never and she said again I did they she said I have helped you enough I said have you been In the house she said yes I said you no wjat the stairs is like then and she said she's had a lot of family's stay with no complaints and said yes probably with old children she didn't answer I then said am going then my husband went in to show her the video he took of the stairs she put her hand up and said she didn't want to no buy he showed her it and she then sorry I realise now why you screw it in and mu husband said her have you been I the house and said no and she said yes she had been in it to me just pure lies I will not book a cottage there gain if it with coast country cottages because they where just rude to us apart from that dartmouth is a beautiful place and would go back just not with that company

The property is conveniently located and you can park outside!
We did enjoy our visit. However there were a number of things that needed addressing some of which were raised following our stay last September 2022 in the same property. The property does need some updating. RAISED LAST SEPTEMBER AND STILL NOT DONE. 1) Extractor hood not working. 2) Kitchen window handles broken, difficult to open. 3) The whole shower needs changing, very old and keeps falling off the bracket when showering. 4) No outside light to decked / garden area. 5) Child gate on stairs broken, danger of falling down stairs. CURRENT VISIT 2023 1) Washer needs service / deep clean. Washing came out stinking and then we were unable to dry anything. NEED a new washer / dryer. 2) Hoover also stinks and needs replacing. 3) Kitchen bin lid broken off and needs replacing. 4) TV has very few stations and we were unable to retune it. 5) Storage cupboard in kitchen/dining area had to be emptied out to get to the ironing board / hoover / iron etc. An old cupboard door had been dumped in there after the new dishwasher had been fitted. 6) A curtain or blind should be on the window next to the front door. Not very private when going up and down stairs. It is a big window looking onto the road. Sykes sent me a voucher whilst we were there for £40 off our next booking and it expires on 13th October. It would be better to have an open expiry date as we were not ready to book our next holiday yet!

If you want possibly the best views over Dartmouth then I think you will struggle to find anywhere better than Onedin House.
However it comes at a price and that is Onedin House is located on a very steep hill. Maybe not a good choice if you have any issues with mobility. Loading and unloading the car is interesting as you have to park on the single track hill, while trying not to hold the traffic up to much. Our party consisted of two adults and our two sons aged 6 & 7 the set up worked perfectly for us, The property is well kitted out with all the basics that you need and the two bathrooms make life abit easier The kitchen and garden are all on the ground floor, the first floor is accessed by a steep stair case, here you will find two bedrooms, one as a double and the other as two singles there is also a bathroom on this floor. Accessed again by a steep stair case is the 2nd floor, here is where you find the spacious master bedroom with excellent views, you can lay in bed and watch the lower ferry go about it's business. There is also a very large bathroom on this floor. Now to our favourite room The snug at the top of the house (another staircase) but this room has French doors that open onto a small balcony, from here you can see most of Dartmouth and Kingswear. The snug has a couple of sofa's and TV. You really can spend hours there just watching the world go by. Finally a great house with superb views and great location close to town.

I cannot fault this house, its location, its view and the standard of finish inside.
Lovely rooms, especially the top floor along with its stunning view, great level of utilities, lots of stairs, 39 to be precise which is why they have a 39 steps poster at the top - nice touch. Its quite a steep hill to the property with a 33% gradient. Sink and fridge on the top floor is a great idea so that you don't continually go up and down to make a brew! I have one criticism but its not about this property which I cannot fault, its the parking, You have a permit to park in the local car park about 5 minutes away. I had 3 bad experiences with this car park all within 1 weeks stay. My car was scratched on 2 separate occasions and then one morning I arrived to find my rear number plate was ripped off. Thankfully it was left on the ground beside the car and wasn't broken so I was able to drive to the nearby Sainsburys and buy some double sided tape to re-attach it. But I have to say I would walk from the house down to my car wondering what else would be done to it. The parking is tight and perhaps the 2 scratches (one was considerable were from other cars parking / leaving), I don't know but the number plate ripped off was clearly vandalism. Ive attached a picture of one of the scratches to my car

We had a wonderful stay at Onedin House.
Everything about it exceeded our expectations. It was perfectly situated. The property was spacious enough for our family of 5 adults to either sit together or lose each other completely within the house! It was tastefully and comfortably furnished with a full range of kitchen equipment etc. The level of cleanliness was high throughout. The snug at top of the house with it's wonder harbour views was a bonus. The delightful well tended garden and the patio space was a lovely little sun trap for morning coffee. We appreciated the seaside touches around the property and enjoyed the references to the property's history. Our estate car struggled to get up the hill beyond the house on the day of our arrival so all passengers jumped out and took our bags out so that the driver could drive to the top and turn around. The Mayor's Avenue car park is a very short walk from the house (approx 5 mins) so on our last day we carried our bags and belongings to the car park in a few stints to avoid parking on the hill outside the house to load up. Lovely coastal walks beyond the castle. The town seemed to be coping well and respectfully within Covid guidelines. We had such a lovely tranquil week. It was perfect!
