What our customers say about their holidays

I intend to write to you more fully.
We expected something very special for the price of this property and we did not think we got that. I think that the owners are resting on their laurels in that the position of the property is exceptional, and the fact that there is parking justifies the very high price. Whilst the kitchen is well equipped it is so badly designed as to be almost unworkable with the fridge down a bottleneck and almost impossible to get to. More to the point is the fact that the shower in the twin bedded room is simply not fit for purpose. It is not possible to turn it on and not be in the cubicle. You have to run through the gamut of freezing cold water to get to the desired temperature and the power of the shower is way too strong for the tiny size of the cubicle. In the other en suite bathroom there is no mirror ⦠nor are there any hand rails to help with the large step down into the bathroom. We failed to get any water flow in the family bathroom. We also discovered that the Draconian check in and check out times are a throw back to Covid and other properties have reverted to a more sympathetic pre-Covid times. I know a lot of people in the village of Portscatho many of whom have rental properties and they could not believe the price. The fact that the price was reduced by £1000 because it was not let in the preceding week left us feeling pretty fed up. I understand that this is a question of the ownerâs taste but the art work on the walls is simply ghastly and totally inappropriate for a rental property. It looks like the work of a student on crack cocaine; it is unsettling and horrible. All in all we were disappointed in what we thought was going to be a spectacular property.

We were very disappointed with the cottage; having stayed at many Sykes cottages this was the worst.
The owner John was very welcoming and helpful but the whole cottage is 'tired' The settee and mattress are saggy and need replacing. The cottage felt damp (john was having trouble with the storage heaters and provided 2 very efficient fan heaters which seemed to warm the air but not the fabric of the building - the situation improved as the week went on as we turned the heating up and opened the windows. The bed linen was fine but the heavy cover on the bed smelt sour. The kitchen was small but well equipped (one small grouse - could an extra 2 mugs be provided?) but to say the cottage had a dining space, while true, is misleading, 2 small chairs and a table not much bigger than a skateboard! The bathroom was tiny, only just big enough to function. The 'courtyard garden' was a narrow space down the side of the cottage which didn't get any sun and was therefore dark and damp, not the open area shown on the photo. Rescorla is not a village, it is a street with houses on it - no pub, no shop, these are in Penwithick, a good mile away. And finally the 'off street parking' was on such a steep slope that we scraped the bottom of the car each time we parked, and judging by the marks on the ground we weren't the first. Thank goodness we had fine, sunny weather and were able to get out each day! We didn't mention most of this to John as a) nothing could be done about most things and b) he was so pleasant we didn't want to upset him about things he couldn't change.

Lostwithiel is a beautiful village and on first glimpse the cottage seemed to be idyllic.
It's a lovely old house, rustic with lots of character and came equipped with everything we needed for a weeks stay. However as the week progressed and the unpredictable cornish weather took hold we sadly became aware that the house has quite a significant damp problem in the small double bedroom and bathroom. By the end of the week the bedroom was covered in black mould and we chose to cut our stay short as also by this point my husband had developed a rather nasty case of sinusitis. Upon relaying our concerns about the property to Sykes we found them less than helpful. They apparently can't investigate the property without multiple complaints. The response from the owners was even more patronising and alluded to the damp problem being our fault as we had not ventilated the property enough.... this is despite us constantly having the windows open and having lived in a period property ourselves (we are well accustomed to the challenges of damp in old houses however when the damp is quite clearly coming from the roof and poorly maintained gutters no amount of window opening will sadly fix it!) Would I recommend Astrantia cottage to others? Absolutely should the owners and Sykes address the damp problem and give the property the TLC it deserves. Unfortunately in it's current state I would encourage people to give it a wide berth.

The reviews that we had read prior to booking were accurate.
The bad points were: the incredibly overgrown garden and patio, front and back, a real mess so we couldn't use them at all; the house could have been cleaner particularly the kitchen utensils and it needs more crockery; the stairs (lots of quirky steps in and out of bathrooms) are very steep and should be highlighted in the description; all the furnishings and ornaments/artworks are very old and tatty, looks like a bunch of things that no one wanted. The kitchen island is absolutely huge to the point of making it difficult to move around when preparing food and the various utility rooms are full of junk. The good points were the location, and that's what you pay for - to be in the central village square walking distance from everything; the beds are very comfortable and the showers all work very well. I've used Sykes for years to book cottages and loved them all. This is the first time I felt the need to review one (negatively) - a prime location should not be an excuse to charge such a high rental when the house is not maintained properly.

This cottage was absolutely perfect for me as a single person wanting peace and quiet and wishing to explore the surrounding area which has multiple beautiful walks through the areas where nature has reclaimed former China clay extraction.
Others criticise the standards of furnishings etc. It is very homely, and this undoubtedly reflects the caring character of its owner John. Read the description, look at the photos and check the location on a map. This is not boutique luxury in a tourist centre so donât book if thatâs what you expect. Itâs very comfortable if you are relaxed about minor defects. Plus itâs relatively cheap, and itâs quick to get to honeypot coastal areas anywhere in Cornwall via the nearby major roads. Parking is very easy on the road opposite the cottage which has virtually no traffic apart from adjacent residents. I never attempted the on site parking bay because youâd need someone with you to assist backing out safely. Roscala is a small hamlet of residential properties but the property has unobstructed views from the front bedroom over adjacent countryside. The small side patio is great for morning coffee. Iâve stayed here twice and would return without hesitation.
