What our customers say about their holidays
Chelsey - Verified booking
We recently decided to stay at The Stable in place of our usual cottage in Wales, as we wanted something new.
The listing has all old pictures, so each room is different to the pictures but we didn't mind this at all. However, it was listed as having a working shower and other amenities. On the first day, we couldn't get the oven to turn on. We had access to the hob, but couldn't find a switch to enable to actual oven. After a long day of driving we just wanted to have a relaxed evening, but unfortunately it took over half an hour for anyone to get back to us. We understood they were busy, but that was the first of the problems. (The oven switch is on the back wall of the bottom left cupboard, behind the pans.) The next day, we couldn't get the radiators working and the cottage was very cold. On asking Karen and Rebecca about it, Rebecca did come round to help. She stated that she knew the cottage gets cold, and it took her a long time to work the heating system herself, but there was no information left for us on how to access the heating. That same day, the shower wouldn't switch on. After ten minutes of fiddling, it came back on long enough for me to wash but not any longer. Because of this, the other three went without a shower. The next day, it still wouldn't turn on so we popped another message to Rebecca. She said she'd come over when she was back next door, and that was fine. She came, fiddled with it herself and left. Unfortunately, it went off completely again just as she left. She came back and phoned the plumber, who talked her through what he thought would work and she got it running. The moment she left again, it went off again. She came back round and told us the plumber would be round later that evening. On coming round, both the plumber and Rebecca tried to get the shower working, but he then came in the front room and said "Don't hate me. But I can't fix it. I need to get onto the roof eventually, but it means you can't have the pressure on at all." Without pressure, the shower was nothing but a small drip. This then went on for the rest of the week - the shower unusable and the water persistently going cold (both in the bathroom and kitchen.) On leaving The Stable and having a day to reflect, we texted Rebecca and Karen about our disappointment and how The Stable fell short. It was listed as having a working shower and this just wasn't the case. We also said that, having reflected, we feel it was justified to ask for a partial refund on our stay. We had no response, so later that day I emailed Sykes Cottages about our stay. Rebecca did get back to us the next day to offer £72, which I thought was an insult considering the problems we had throughout the whole week. On discussing this with Sykes Cottages, it became clear they would not be willing to help, and in fact we were spoken to by one member of staff like dirt on her shoe. She was not willing to hear us out, and may as well have accused us of lying about the shower which just was not the case. She also stated "well, no one else has made a complaint about The Stable before" which would have been fine except we were the first guests! That comment in itself showed us that Sykes Cottages would not listen or assist us in any way. They were entirely uninterested and made it clear they would not be pursuing our complaint and that we either accept £72 or nothing at all. I would not visit The Stable in the future, and I would suggest it is avoided by anyone else who doesn't want a disappointing holiday. We will never use Sykes Cottages again and would suggest others avoid at all costs!

Hawthorn Cottage is a hidden gem indeed.
The cottage is about half an hour from many amazing beaches of Cardigan Bay in a quiet village. As previous reviewers have said, it is really nice to spend time around the cottage itself, in the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings. The owner Diane is extremely helpful. She even took our children out to show them the various animals on their farm. Our children loved it so much they keep asking us when we could go back there again. The back garden to the cottage is nice and private. It also has a swing and a trampoline for children to play in. Given how secluded the place it, it really feels safe to let children out on their own without much to worry about. The cottage was extremely clean and reasonably well stocked in pots, pans, cutlery and all the white goods. A dishwasher would be a good addition but that's definitely not end of the world. The cottage is tastefully decorated. The super-king size bed in the living room was extremely comfortable and so were the duvets. The wood burner was a great feature and thanks to Diane for helping us learn to start it on our own. She even provided all the firewood, kindling and firebricks enough to last us the 4 days we stayed there. Diane also left us a couple of cup-cakes, and half a dozen eggs from her hens and ducks on her farm when we arrived, which we enjoyed. We'd love to come back and stay here again sometime in the not so distant future.

This cottage is a gem find!
! if you are looking for a peaceful off the beaten track place to unwind and switch off from the busy daily routine or just relax. The hosts are always on hand to offer advice and guidance on local attractions within easy reach of the location. The special attention to detail within the cottage by the hosts adds a feeling from home to home. This was our second visit to this Gem find where we stayed 3 years ago and really enjoyed the enhancements made to the property on this visit. There are plenty of things to do if you're into Mountain Bike riding, fishing, enjoy the outdoors walking local coastal paths and the local beaches are fabulous too. The local swimming pool came in handy for our children on a raining morning and is reasonable priced to support this local community facility. The woodlands around the vicinity of this cottage add an excitement to children and adults alike finding little hidden treasures. The variety of animals at the location add the beauty to the surroundings and we loved how they greet you on your return from a days outing. We look forward to revisiting this property again.

Perfect! We loved everything about Penywhelp House.
It was quaint but spacious and cosy, very clean and very good valve for money. It had everything we needed, the owners had thought of everything right down to fire-lighters for the log burner. Wales wasnât the place to visit for the weather in April there were thunderstorms and lots of rain, when it was sunny and warm back in Yorkshire. So for a couple of days we just sat with the dog by the fire watching the snooker World Cup, then nipped over the street to the dog friendly pub in the evening which did amazing food by the river (especially Sunday lunch). The village of St Dogmaels is very picturesque, with an old Abbey, coffee shop, fish & chip shop, post office and convenience store, it is very community focused and friendly and even has a community pub!. The famous local produce market is held on a Tuesday morning - not to be missed. Just a mile or two up the road from the cottage itself is a lovely little beach with an amazingly high quality beach hut cafe. All in all both the cottage and the location couldnât have been better and we intend to visit again next year.

This cottage was a perfect, peaceful retreat set in lush, verdant rural surroundings.
The moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome by our lovely hosts Diane and Sean who have made the cottage so cosy - we particularly enjoyed our evenings by the fabulous wood burning stove which we put on even though it was quite warm. There were fresh eggs laid by their glorious mix of hens, a homemade date and walnut loaf and a proper teapot in the mix to welcome us. We really had a very lovely week long break exploring the Welsh countryside and fantastic beaches. However it goes without saying that there real star of the trip was Brewster, a little barrel shaped border terrier who would visit us morning and evening mainly in the hope of food of course but he loved a tummy tickle too. He would bark to let us know he was there, such a little character with his teddy bear face and wagging tail. We would definitely recommend a stay here, you will be well looked after and you really do get away from it all and just enjoy the natural beauty which is everywhere. Thank you to our great hosts.
