What our customers say about their holidays

  • Robert - Verified booking

We stayed at Riverside, Stokesay, in the last week of April 2023.

The one-bedroom apartment is upstairs in the Old Vicarage; the stairs are narrow and quite steep with a return so would be difficult for anyone with poor mobility. That said, this is one of the nicest rentals we have stayed in. The owners are friendly and greeted us in person. The apartment features large rooms and high ceilings throughout, with large Georgian windows overlooking the owners' large garden. These are single-glazed except in the bedroom (secondary glazing). The property is on the A49 but we were not disturbed by traffic noise at night. The central heating works well and kept the place warm and cosy. There is a large shower room and separate WC. The bedroom features a 6'x8' bed with two large built-in wardrobes, so plenty of storage. The kitchenette, open plan with the lounge, is basic, featuring a mini-oven with hob and a microwave but we rustled up basic meals ok. Some visitors will no doubt prefer to eat out anyway. The views are lovely and the garden is alive with wildlife: birds on the nut feeders, pheasants and wild rabbits. There is a seating area for guests too. The wifi worked well except when the resident squirrels chewed through the phone line! This was fixed courtesy of BT. The property is next door to picturesque Stokesay Castle (EH), and there are walks from the property via the Discovery Centre in Craven Arms. Ludlow is nearby, Bishops Castle and Church Stretton/The Long Mynd/Cardingmill Valley (NT) are a short drive away. The property sits nicely in the south Shropshire hills AONB, and gives access to places in north Herefordshire too, such as Croft Castle (NT), worth a visit. We drive an EV and found a chargepoint in nearby Craven Arms, in the petrol station at Tuffin's supermarket. This has four plugs which seem to be little used so a charge is easy to obtain.

The garden is splendid for dogs, large and fully enclosed.

The cottage was spotless with not a speck of dust anywhere. The cottage is small and old but the space has been used well, the kitchen/dining area is compact which the photos give the illusion of being bigger. The lounge has comfortable furniture, and a lovely fireplace, there is a useful baby gate at the bottom of the stairs as these lead directly into the bedroom (no door) The downstairs bathroom is spacious, the shower temperature is difficult to control, perhaps due to water pressure. Disappointing that the only views to the garden are from the extension at the rear, lounge, kitchen and bedrooms only have the road view. The arrival time of 5pm which I thought was set by the agents, apparently this is set by the owner, she would not allow an earlier arrival, even though departure is 9am. The owners live in the farm across the way they never came across to welcome or introduce themselves which surprised us.

A lovely cottage in a beautiful setting with a great enclosed garden, perfect for dogs.

The cottage was warm and welcoming when we arrived on a chilly afternoon. Comfortable sitting room and bedrooms, excellent bed. Plenty of logs for the wood burning stove. It has been so wet this winter that I asked whether it would be possible to have a hosepipe on the outdoor tap to wash the dog before he went indoors and Jason kindly organised this - it was very useful given the mud! The porch and tiled floors allowed us to dry ourselves and dogs before going into the living room. Such a good arrangement. A couple of minor points. A poker would be useful, and some pot lids! They were all missing. We loved the cottage and it is in a brilliant place to go walking, both straight from the garden gate and to beautiful walks quite nearby, like Bury Ditches, Long Mynd etc. The White Horse at Clun does great food too.

The photos of the property don’t do it justice.

The sofas are comfortable and the living room extremely cosy particularly with the fire roaring. Although we brought our own wood there was plenty available in the outhouse. The property is spotlessly clean with plenty of kitchenware and utensils (although the knives could do with a sharpen lol). The owners responded to a minor issue we had promptly which we appreciated. The only negative is the walks from the doorstep have no footpaths and the roads very narrow so difficult to walk with dogs. If you’re happy to drive out this isn’t a problem. Overall though a very chilled, relaxing and quiet break. Would absolutely recommend.

Lovely cosy secluded cottage, one mile from Clun.

We escaped the loud fireworks in the Black Country on New Years Eve which start at 8 and continue past midnight. Couldn’t hear a pin drop. Real Christmas tree in the living room, beautiful cottage and wood burner, massive secure garden for our 2 boisterous Vizslas who loved their stay. Owners fab, answered questions about walks ASAP. Public footpath walk to Clun by the river 2 mins away, note: lots of stiles if you have big dogs who won’t jump them. White Horse at Clun do fab food to take away, and don’t forget Caratacus the amazing gift shop next door to the White Horse, great little finds!
