What our customers say about their holidays

Large, comfortable and well equipped.
Fabulous views, lovely garden. The house is in a great position, easy walk to Robin Hood's Bay, excellent facilities in the village (pub, shop, bakery) and on a regular half hourly bus route between Whitby and Scarborough (as a party of 6 with only one car, the bus was really useful). Great walks straight out of the door. The old railway line or Cinder Path runs along the coastal route as well as the Cleveland way so lots of options for circular routes. The house had all that we needed - in the absence of detailed reviews on the Sykes House page I had scoured reviews on other companies and some had said the facilities were lacking, but they weren't at all. The utility room with its stable door had a good washing machine (that played a little tune when it finished), dishwasher and tumble drier, there was a washing line, pegs, ironing board and iron, two vacuum cleaners (one wasn't working but one of my sons fixed it and emptied it so now there are two). Lots of fridge and freezer space, cafetierres and teapots, lovely range cooker, big dining table for dining and games, good telly for watching Wimbledon on, cute summer house in the garden that was very popular with our party. We couldn't work out the recycling and I asked Sykes and they said only one bin, so were saving things and taking them with us looking for recycling centres. Towards the end of our week we found a note under a chopping board saying that the bin contents will all go to be sorted at a recycling centre so it's a shame we didn't see that sign earlier. If you are reading this you will know you can put everything in the bin with a clear conscience. The only thing missing was oven gloves (I have left the ones I brought at the cottage for the next people) and a door mat front and back would have been really useful as we had showery weather. Also maybe a shoe rack and a couple of extra coat hooks for a house that sleeps 10. There's a nice sage patch in the garden if you want herbs for your dinner - it's near the washing line.

This is an ideally situated property to access both Fylingthorpe and Robin Hoods Bay( about half a mile to the top of the hill via the road) Sheen Cottage is good on some aspects but lacking on others.
For a multigenerational family there is plenty of space, however it should be noted that all of the toilets and bathrooms are on the first floor. One of the bathrooms is modern and has a walk in shower and a bath, the other is dated and has a shower over the bath. There is a third separate toilet which is extremely old but functional. The bedrooms were big enough with storage aplenty, 4 of the 5 are on the back of the property so have great views. The kitchen is fairly big with a large range cooker and fridge. The sink unit and drainer could do with updating. There are just enough dishes and cutlery, more would be useful. The dishwasher is in the utility room across the hallway with the washer and tumble drier. The lounge and dining room are on the back overlooking the garden but only the dining room can accommodate the maximum number of guests. T.v and Wi-Fi were both ok. The towels and bed linen were good and we found the beds relatively comfortable. Parking was outside, we didnât have any problem parking 3 cars on the roadside. On the down side, the property could do with a really good clean .Surfaces felt sticky , the windows were dirty and there were lots of dust webs. A feeling of neglect ie broken window panes, curtain rails that were so old they fell down when you tried to close the curtains. The wheelie bin is filthy and desperately needs a clean. The garden whilst picturesque had really long grass that we asked to be cut. The âwildâarea at the bottom was not really child friendly as it was overgrown with weeds and you werenât sure what lurked beneath(Dog poo?). The summerhouse was really grubby , a shame as it would have been lovely to sit in if there wasnât so much dirt and dust there. We wouldnât return to Sheen Cottage unless it was upgraded

This was our second weeks Esk was our second holiday.
It didn't start off well as the keg lock wouldn't work and it was a cold wind too. I couldn't contact the owners they'd set an ansaphone eventually i got thru to Sykes they told us they would contact the owners and told us to go for a drink. After 90 minutes the cleaner turned up and it appeared the lock had jammed so 2hrs it took to get in. It was nice and light in the Lounge one of the comfortably sofas out of 7th ones we had tried. It is well equipped and very nice crockery and pans etc. The Bathroom was nice and large nicely tiled and coordinated. Plenty of space for towels and others to place. The bedrooms are a little smaller than others but adequately fine. Only one issue it was 2nd bedroom was 2 single beds, and wasn't allowed to be moved. This is a good property with good views, you one thing note so easy is the parking a little awkward if you have 2 cars there's not many spaces, so we used my car helping a little. It's a very good base for travelling Yorkshire and plenty of places to visit. First came Whitby Abbey as my daughter in law is a Harry Potter fan so next was Gouthland to the Train Station. Reiveaux Abbey which is English Heritage. If you have that and National Trust it saves an awful lot of money. Good views from the Viaduct nice to lastly go sit out the back with a cup of tea and some cake from Botham's Backery of Whitby thats on the side of Shopping Complex with Sainsburys is good with large selection of cakes biscuits confectionary cheaper than other Shops stocking their items. Plus dont forget the fish and chops from near the harbour you can't go wrong. We all had a lovely time and already planning our 3rd visit since end of February.

Our stay at Dovecote was lovely.
However, we do feel that it would benefit from some constructive criticism: The overall cleanliness behind curtains, corners of rooms, etc were cobwells. The quality of the beds was poor. It gives the impression of a rustic style cottage but done on the cheap. The sofas desperately need replacing for comfort and aesthetics. The stairs need maintenance desparately. As it is a large property, you would assume that children would be staying and as we have previously experienced in other rentals, board games, books and DVDs have been available. Knowing the Yorkshire weather, sometimes days are needed to be home based and these would have been a great benefit. Also, the weather required us to go and buy clothes horses to dry our washing. A fifty pound expense where these have been part of the accommodation from Sykes. It may be useful for Sykes to give the owners a bit more feedback so that similar services are offered at all their properties. Also a welcome pack would be great. Other accommodation have provided these. e.g. milk, bread, eggs, biscuits, tea and coffee. It is a small expense to provide a warming impact on customers. A few small changes could encourage people to return year after year, rather than just once. The landlord and his wife are lovely. There is a fantastic play area for the children and the scenery is idyllic. A very well equipped kitchen.

Sheen cottage is a great property for a large party in a very convenient position for Robin Hood's Bay but out of the main village.
There is a pub, a village store and a childrens park within 5 minutes walk. Weve stayed here 3 times but I'm afraid this year there were some aspects that were not satisfactory. General cleanliness is an issue. The interiors of some of the kitchen units were dirty. Windows and window frames need a good clean. There was a curtain missing in the dining room. There is a general air of neglect about the property. The bathrooms need some storage units or shelves. There certainly isn't enough storage for 10 people in the bathrooms. Waste bins in all the rooms would be helpful. The one rubbish bin outside is not adequate for ten people considering all the recycling has to go in there as well. On a positive note the garden is very attractive and a good size for children to play in. I would say that that if you're looking for a property that's fully refurbished and immaculate this probably isn't for you. But if you want somewhere whpere a group of young children can play without fear of spoiling something, this is ideal. Our grandchildren love it here.
