What our customers say about their holidays
Lorien - Verified booking
The house is a really good size and well sound proofed - the early risers could go to the living room without the others in the bedrooms hearing a thing, the size and layout lends itself well to groups/families.
There was loads of fridge space (2 fridges) and a fab wine fridge too. There was also a Christmas tree which was a nice touch. The owner was helpful in the lead up to the stay and replied quickly when we messaged during too. However unfortunately much of the house is quite tired, needs a refresh and the cleanliness left a lot to be desired, pots/pans etc werenât clean and carpets and sofa were grubby - when we got the hoover out it barely worked so this is probably contributing to that. Toilets were also dirty on arrival - one of them quite badly. The bedroom on the far left as you look at them smells of damp - as though thereâs either an existing leak or an old one that hasnât been repaired, really off putting to spend nights in there, especially with our baby. The en-suite in that room is also very cold, smelly and the towel rail doesnât work in it. The heating in the house is on a setting which isnât controllable from within the house (the owner controls the heating externally) and so even though youâre able to message to have the heating altered, you canât control this from within - the living room was always roasting even when the setting was lowered by the owner, but we didnât want the bedrooms to get any cooler so therefore didnât ask for the living room to be turned any lower. It is also all underfloor heating, which sounds nice but in winter when heating needs to be on meant our dogs couldnât settle as they were too hot and laying the baby down on a blanket wasnât doable as she was also getting too warm. Although the owner was always helpful and turned the heating down as soon as we asked, it is a nuisance to have to message to control your own heating and we did have to have windows in the living room open constantly to cool it down, in order to have the heating on in the rest of the house. We had a nice stay and it was nice to walk up to the hotel for a drink in the bar, but really having a more comfortable, clean house and control over temperature ourselves would have been appreciated. If the property was clean and a bit more well maintained then value for money would be fantastic, but unfortunately all of us felt weâd rather have paid more to feel like the place had been adequately cleaned at the very least.

Generally, the cottage was lovely.
However, it was unfortunate that we arrived in the week that we had 4 days of non-stop rain, and I do mean deluge. After our trips out we were soaked to the skin and needed to get warm. We followed the central heating instructions in the manual doing everything correctly, but it would not turn on. it just reverted back to its original state. So we made do with the electric fire. But this was on a timer and as soon as we switched it on it would turn itself off after 20 minutes to half an hour or so and then we could not immediately switch it back on. So we had a major problem of keeping warm. Had the weather been more clement we would not have noticed much of these things, but unfortunately, this was not the case. When we arrived we found the fridge was on number 1 and was not working at that setting, and it was actually warm inside. However, we turned it full on to number 7 and that became adequate. This Property is excellent for Warm weather letting, but when it comes to Autumn, Winter, and January/February letting the Owners must get on top of heating problems. These comments are meant to be constructive for the Owner and are in no way meant to demean what is a beautiful and clean Property.

Forgive me for taking so long to share my thoughts on my wonderful holiday home in the delightful Lake District village of Staveley.
Have been staying in the Lakes for 20+ years, and this was 'comfortably' the most impressive place in which I've stayed. From the front door and entrance, to the rear garden and patio, it had been refurbished and equipped to standards which absolutely met my own ... and that's never previously happened in a holiday let. Ideal location within the village, with the coffee shop which specialises in Peruvian blends and the authentic gelato parlour, the 'chippie', butcher, Hawkshead beer-hall and the Eagle & Child all nearby. Parking outside, the bus stop at the end of the road and, for those who know Staveley's layout, the train station just a short stroll away. Perfectly positioned for access via the A591 to Windermere, and those who prefer grass to tarmac will also be delighted by its positioning. In short, it should be seen as a home from home, and certainly not 'just' as a holiday let. When I next return to the Southern Lakes, it will be Hugill Cottage for me. Cheers. Ian Halstead

Ideal property for a family get together, (we had three couples and four young children).
The kitchen is large and well equipped (even had wine fridge) the chef we employed for our celebration meal was very pleased with it. The space between the bedrooms and the social areas meant that the children werenât disturbed by the adults during the evening. The living room and bedrooms are all comfortable and pleasantly furnished. Excellent showers/en-suite/bathroom facilities too. The building is centrally heated and has a wood burning stove (wood provided) we found it a little too warm at times with confusing temperature controls. The Gatehouse is in a quiet location but only a few minutes drive from the M6. Kendal is 10 minutes away and Windermere 20 minutes away. The only problems that we encountered was a complete lack of side plates and any oven dishes for baking in, a lack of space for rubbish and recycling, a leak in the bathroom radiator and the lingering smell of smoking in the entrance porch where previous occupants have unfortunately smoked.

We both really enjoyed our stay at Adaâs hideaway.
Itâs such a beautiful property, we especially liked the reverse living. With the living room upstairs so you could appreciate the views of the fields and horses. The main bathroom was lovely with a beautiful waterfall shower plus separate shower too. The beds were so comfortable, we honestly havenât slept so well! Weâd love to know what mattresses they are.The only thing missing is a dressing table and mirror in the master bedroom. I used a separate room to get ready which had a mirror. Iâd have rated 5 stars if it had this. Also, a big coffee table would be nice in the living room. These are things are can easily be changed though so thatâs just me being âpickyâ. Other than that, Iâd highly recommend ADAâs hideaway, beautiful location, lovely and quiet and so comfortable. Thank you so much for such a lovely peaceful week which we both really needed.
