What our customers say about their holidays

First off, we had a lovely week at Foxy cottage despite the mixed weather.
Because of the excellent Sykes website and the photographs therein, the cottage lived up to the expectations. It is a beautiful, comfortable cottage in a pretty village. The cottage was reasonably well equipped with utensils, pans and cleaning materials etc, however we left some feedback on a couple of possible improvements. I found the beds comfortable and the rooms reasonably spacious with enough storage space for a week or so. The âBoot Roomâ was useful but there was limited space for boots and shoes because it is in effect a storage cupboard for high chairs, irons, mops and hoover etc. On arrival the cottage was clean (initial impression) with a lovely welcome pack and cute hearts on the toilet roll for example. Every individual has differing standards of cleanliness and, as I said, initially the cottage appeared clean but throughout the week we discovered areas that could have been improved, cooker, oven and extractor hood, dusty skirting boards etc. This is a 5* cottage and for the most part I would agree, although 4.5* would be more accurate. Parking is not possible at the cottage. We were fortunate that the nearby parking at the end of the lane was available and we did not require the use of the large village car park. This is mentioned in the cottage details. That said, looking on the positives, we really did have a wonderful holiday in the cottage. I would definitely recommend it for a couple or small family. The location close to tourist attractions and 3 towns with facilities is another bonus.

We enjoyed our stay at this spacious secluded cottage on the outskirts of Bewerley.
The beds were some the most comfortable we have found in Sykes cottages. Indeed we regret we had not investigated their manufacture further before leaving to perhaps replace those at home. There was plenty of room with a large kitchen / diner and a very spacious bathroom. The sizeable utility room was an added bonus We found the cottage very convenient for nearby Pateley Bridge and its annual Nidderdale show. We enjoyed our walks from the doorstep as well as exploring the upper reaches of the lovely quiet Nidderdale valley and beyond. What could have enhanced our thoroughly enjoyable stay in this cottage further ?:- We would have appreciated further instructions on operating the central heating and heated bathroom floor to get the best out of them. The lounge sofa was not so comfortable and would have been a bit restrictive if 4 people wanted to enjoy the tv. We found the shower control awkward when trying to use it with wet hands. Whilst the steep drivewayâs surface had been enhanced recently, we found it could still be slippery in certain conditions. As the evenings were drawing in we believe the cottage would have benefitted from some enhancements to the lighting with perhaps better illumination of the kitchen worktops , higher bedside lamps for reading and a night light on the corridor between the bathroom and bedroom doors. We were surprised to find no washing up bowl in the kitchen or utility sink. We would seriously consider booking it again when we next want to visit the area.

What a lovely cottage located in the quiet, but beautiful village of Ripley.
The cottage listing was very accurate and came with all the stuff we needed for the week (towels, dishwasher tabs, hand gel, washing up liquid, sugar, coffee etc.) - unfortunately no tea bags, but we brought our own so all OK. The beds were very comfy, and the lounge and dining room were nice spaces to relax in during the evening. Views over the field with horses, sheep etc. was lovely. We brought Amazon Firesticks for the TVâs which worked well and the Wi-Fi was fine. Car parking was at the end of the lane and we had no issues with this throughout our stay. Ripley itself was lovely and the kids loved the play area in the village. The Ripley Store is great for the essentials (bread, milk etc.) and they sell amazing pies, sausage rolls and pastries. The Ripley Ice Cream was a real highlight. Near Ripley there is a large Morrisons near Ripon for the larger shop at the beginning of your week. Within 10 miles of Ripley there is so much to see and do, our favourites were Brimham Rocks, Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Pateley Bridge and Knaresborough. We also spent a day visiting York and this was great, visit the Minster and do the guided tour. Finally, the bus service is ideal if you do not wish to drive everywhere and runs regularly through Ripley to Leeds, Harrogate and Ripon. We had a great stay and very much recommend.

Overall, we have very much enjoyed our stay.
It's a beautiful cottage, good interior design elements, well equipped and in a fabulous location. With a little attention, if could easily score excellent rather than very good. As a constructive criticism, the following should be actioned. The small planted area around the entrace door is overgrown with weeds, and the front door needs repainting. (one never gets a second chance to make a good first impression.)The whole cottage needs a serious 'deep' clean, as there is months worth of dust in areas such as base of electric fires, over ornaments and inside drawers. Seat cushions are needed for the dining chairs because they are too low for the dining table. The sheets could be better quality. Second handrail very much needed. ( as mentioned numerous times in visitors book- stairs steep with narrow treads) All the interior window frames are thick with black mould. If these things were dealt with, this cottage could easily be one of the best.

The cottage is well situated in a pleasant location and overall we enjoyed our stay, however there were some things that need attention.
The entrance to the cottage is not just steep, as was warned in the listing, but it is also unsurfaced! Which meant our vehicle which is an SUV, was scattering and slipping on the hardcore all the way up. This could easily be remedied by surfacing the hill with either tarmac or concrete. This needs doing as a matter of urgency. In the cottage we were disappointed to find there was no freezer, even the fridge did not have a freezer compartment. Also we could not find an Iron or ironing board anywhere. these are small things which would be easily remedied, and they would have made our stay so much more enjoyable. Finally the hot water system does need attention. Each morning upstairs we seemed to have to have difficulty getting the hot water to come out out of the tap! If these problems are addressed we would be happy to come back.
