What our customers say about their holidays
Jill - Verified booking
Great location, lovely and private, parked the car on the road above about 100 ft away and we carried bits down the incline to the holiday let.
We had absolutely no issue with this whatsoever. Parked up Sunday afternoon and never touched the car again until we left on Wednesday evening, as we walked or used the Coastliner, a 5minute walk to the 840/843 stop which took us to Whitby, Thornton Le Dale, Malton and Dalby Forest and the 128 from Pickering Coop to Scarborough. £2 a journey until the end of March. PERFECT!!! Relaxing stay, garden secluded and had open views over the train station. A very good range of shops and eateries and local pubs if you searched for them, which we did. The church is wonderful and always open to visit. The upstairs living space in the holiday let is perfect, where we watched sunsets, through the window. The building is very warm and snuggly, we turned the heating down and opened doors but we are used to being cool rather than wanting to be overheated, the choice is yours and the Hive can be switched to support this. Only ideas - A comfy chair in the dining area , if space allows , may make for a lovely reading space but I suppose this is available upstairs so maybe unnecessary, a few more hooks on doors and possibly set of drawers in one of the bedrooms rather than the open hanging area but it works for short stays without a doubt. Plenty of games and books to read and films. The tv is adequate but if you are used to large screens you may be a tad disappointed but not a big issue as there is lots to do besides watch Tv. The owners next door leave you to it and have tried really hard to ensure maximum privacy for clients which is noted and appreciated. We did wonder if the mattress on the bed was a combination soft side and hard side which if it is maybe needs to be mentioned in the brochure. We had a fabulous time, we stayed 3 nights and we could have potentially done a week, as didn't get to try all the eateries. We did give all the pubs a good crack and they were all pretty decent, the food at the Black Swan looked great and itâs so cosy inside and the staff friendly. The Bay Horse was great when it opened more traditional for locals. The Rose inn was friendly and had a lovely outside seating area near to the river / stream. The Sun has had refurb and again a local, but we felt welcome enough. The recently refurbed sports gin bar was excellent friendly and a lovely setting, can imagine that being a very busy venue at the weekends. Lots of lovely cafes Russellâs smashing but again loads to go at. We had a brilliant stay and would highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

Quirky and cosy, well equipped property on four levels.
Two good sized fridges in the kitchen, good size freezer and washer/dryer in the boot room. Everon stove (Aga style) was a bit of a challenge but we managed ok. Good size bedrooms with comfy beds (bed linen could do with being upgraded), lovely big kitchen with large farmhouse kitchen table. Beautiful lounge with an open coal fire which was perfect for our Christmas stay? The Christmas decorations and Christmas tree were perfect, even down to putting chocolates on the tree for our small grandchildren. A welcome pack of Champagne and biscuits was much appreciated and we all enjoyed the 'treasure hunt', especially when there was treasure (sweets) at the end of it. The location is stunning and we all had our own version of which window had the best view. The window shapes in the cottage are varied with some being arch, round, stained etc. Our grandchildren loved each morning looking out to see the sheep and horses in the field next to the cottage. We cannot comment on the village facilities as being Christmas most were closed over the time we were there. There is a good size bathroom with a toilet, bath and an electric shower on the 2nd floor, a shower and toilet on the ground floor off the boot room. Attention to detail in regards to cleaning could be improved - big cobwebs, dead flies on window sills. Outside space a little grubby - big cobwebs, dead spiders and flies need sweeping off of the inside of the canopy outside the front door. There are two allocated parking bays outside the cottage. We had a fabulous family Christmas (4 adults, 2 small children) and all loved the quirky style of the cottage, we have some lovely memories which we will treasure forever, in fact our two little grandchildren didn't want to leave. We are listing a few little niggles which could be improved upon but by no means did they impact on our stay: Bedroom on the top floor has a curtain across the door opening (no closing door) Poor water flow re shower on 2nd floor. Boot room shower could do with some heat in it, heated towel rail not working, bit of an upgrade would improve this area, it could be a bit smarter and cleaner. Front door curtain needs replacing, existing one very shabby.

Yet another wonderful holiday at the Chapel.
This time we were having a very special vow renewals service at the local church. The cottage had everything we needed and plenty of room for manicures and beauty treatments, courtesy of the church warden's daughter. The church is beautiful and so peaceful - please sign their visitors book to try to save it. Let's keep it there for another 200 years. We couldn't have had anywhere better to stay. Plenty of room for everyone and the two bathrooms made getting ready easy, which was pretty impressive with seven adults. The rooms are lovely and it's so restful. I love the room where you can hear the stream running by. Just imagine the equivalent of two and half weddings going from the same location and you'll understand why we keep coming back to the chapel. Everyone was comfortably seated for the take away 'Desperate Dan' steak pie from The Coach and Horses pub (wonderful pub, check it out). We even sent the boys out for breakfast at Graze on the Green (delicious food and caakes, very friendly), so we could get ready in peace. Large fridge and separate freezer were great, no problem with being able to stock up for days ahead. A week isn't long enough. Plenty of local places to visit and you're near to Whitby, Helmsley and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (check out dining services on the steam trains, or the steam train driving experience if you're so inclined). The chapel owner uses it for his own holidays, so you know it's good. He's so helpful and friendly, thank you Mark. We'll be back.

We stayed at dovecote the same week last year and were very excited to be going back, however, we were very disappointed with our stay this year.
We contacted Sykes prior to our arrival to ask for the second bedroom to be made into a double for for bedding to be left for the sofa bed. This is because our 2 teenage children (1 boy, 1girl) wanted to have privacy. However when we arrived the bed had been made into a double but no bedding had been left for the sofa bed, which left us with a worse situation because they definitely couldnât share a bed! My daughter had to make do with blankets. The mattress in the master bedroom is awful, incredibly soft (very saggy) and we had to swap with my son as it gave us both a bad back after 1 night. We actually came home a day early as it was giving my son a bad back too. I had to clean the worktops and crockery when we arrived as they were dirty. We had to hoover the sofa bed as it was disgusting to then find the hoover hadnât been emptied in what looked like months and wasnât picking anything up. The toilet seat in the en-suite was loose and the toilet flush handle in the main bathroom worked (just) but felt like it had broken. Incredibly disappointing, it felt like dovecote had zero maintenance since our last stay which is a real shame as itâs a beautiful cottage which is well located. I felt like I left the cottage cleaner when we left than when we arrived. Unfortunately we wonât be going back for a third year

A quirky old property that is feeling its age.
We had a lovely stay and the property is well positioned. However, the listing needs updating. There are not three double beds, as stated and photographed, but two double and two twins. The kitchen is very different to shown and now has an induction hob which needs to be stated as it cannot be used by someone with a pacemaker. This was an issue for us. The property was not very clean, with lots of dust and cobwebs. Carpets very worn, especially in the lounge. Some nice furniture, some very old and tired. The doors donât fit properly, making them very noisy when opening and closing. Kitchen, whilst fairly new, is designed with the fridge in front of cupboards, this could be easily remedied by moving one of the storage heaters and relocating it. The bedding was very old and worn, our had bloodstains on it. Towels were good and seemed fairly new but the bathrooms are very old and grubby, in much need of a re-grouting and new shower screens at the very least. The TV was difficult to use, perhaps some very clear instructions left by the remotes would help? The property instruction book was very interesting, with lots of old photographs and maps of the area, but it does need to be updated. The owners, whenever we contacted them, were very helpful and friendly.
