What our customers say about their holidays
Julie - Verified booking
We stayed for 3 nights at The Snug, from 17th to 20th September 2021.
On arrival we were greeted by a young lady who was very friendly, and showed us to our parking bay, and spoke to us in regards to what we needed to know, for our stay. She also said that she was showing us around as the owners were away. The Snug was very clean, however the grass area had not been freshly cut, which I would have expected, prior to our arrival and the outside table was really dirty, and the chairs had not been washed down - they were dirty too, and covered in leaves. The Snug is advertised as âfinished to an extremely high standardâ, therefore I would have expected this - we thought that maybe because the owners were away, this was missed? We also found that there was no where for our cases. There were drawers under the bed, which were rickety, and hard to open, so we didnât use them. I also would of liked to have a full length mirror in The Snug (which would have been perfectly situated hung on the inside of the bathroom door). We also felt that there could have been shelves somewhere inside the bathroom, as there was nowhere to put toiletries, which we ended up leaving in our wash bags, which ended up on the little table each day - we just couldnât keep the place tidy and felt this is most defiantly a place to stay for no longer than one night, maximum two. The towels were very, very disappointing, they were quite small, and very hard/rough. Nice big fluffy towels would have been a nice touch. We also found no where to dry off towels and shorts/swimming costume etc (from the hot tub), therefore I would suggest an area for a clothes line, as this just made the inside of The Snug feel more messy. There were shutters on the windows, however nothing over the glass on the door, or the little window above the bed, therefore we couldnât really have the full lie in that we were hoping for. The most disappointing part for us was the bed/mattress - we found it really uncomfortable to the point where by day three, we were both struggling, and I ended up pulling a muscle in my neck/shoulder - there was only one pillow each too. Another pillow each should have been an option. We were all ready to make bacon sandwiches one morning, however when we pulled out the portable hob; we found no where to plug in, without removing the microwave from the built in area. The Snug is in a very private area, which is nice and the noise of the river/waterfall is nice to hear too, and of course the hot tub is lovely. We personally thought The Snug was too small for us, especially for a 3 night stay, and although that canât be changed; we did feel that there could have been some improvements to The Snug to make it much, much better - mainly the bed/mattress. Although itâs not advertised; we also feel that a welcome hamper, bread, milk (not just sachets), butter, jam etc would have been a lovely personal touch, which Iâve experienced in other micro homes - it wouldnât have cost much, and would be a lovely attribute that would make anyone smile :) This break was booked for my birthday, and although we made it nice, and travelled to different places; we were disappointed with certain aspects of our stay (as above). Our highlight was eating in the beautiful barn, just down from The Secret River Cafe, Longtown, and I urge anyone to go - itâs beautiful. There is nothing in Longtown itself, unless you need to use the SPA - i donât plan on returning there in a hurry unfortunately.

Absolutely FANTASTIC property.
Me, my partner and our 2 Labradors (Heidi & Zoe) stayed here for the weekend (first weekend of opening) and we couldnât have asked for a better place to call home for the weekend. Everything was completely perfect from start to finish - there wasnât anything more we could of asked for at Meadow Syke Byre. Ruth was very welcoming and showed us around the property, explained how the hot tub worked and also showed us the utility room - dog shower, one word⦠AMAZING and well needed after busy days exploring The Lake District. The whole accommodation and lay out is very well thought out and at such a high standard. The bed was by far the comfiest we have EVER slept on - so much so weâve already ordered a DreamCloud mattress since visiting! We were also amazed to find out there is a door through to the property next door - fabulous if youâre going away with family or friends and one we will definitely bare in mind for future bookings. The fields outside the property were amazing and extremely useful for letting the girls out for a run first thing on a morning and last thing at night! Overall we had a perfect weekend at Meadow Syke Barn, we will 100% recommend the property to family and friends and hopefully be back again when we next explore The Lake District! Thank you Ruth for a wonderful stay - we hope to see you again in the near future, Beth & Marc (and Heidi & Zoe)

We have just left after spending a week in this cottage and loved it so much we are going to rebook as soon as we get home!
Ruth is an amazing host and met us at the property after a very long drive. She showed us around the property and also kept us up to date during our stay when there was a power cut, which was appreciated. The cottage is just beautiful and perfect. The attention to detail during the renovation of the barn is spot on. The cottage itself is spotless, and has all the amenities that you need. The bed was so comfortable, we are going to buy the same mattress for our home! The hot tub was just what we needed after exploring the area. Our two dogs were well catered for with bowls, blankets and towels along with some welcome biscuits for them. The cottage comes with bi fold doors, which we took advantage of when the weather was nice, and it just made the property feel so much bigger. We would have liked a 3 seater sofa or a small chair in the living room as we felt the seating area was restricted, but that is just a very minor detail. I have seen a review on the bigger cottage next door, complaining about access to the property being difficult and you cannot swing your car into the access point if you approach from the left hand side. Ignore that negative review, we have a 4x4 vehicle and managed to do it every time with no issues! All in all, we loved staying here, the dogs loved it and we will be back soon!

A lovely place to stay, very well kept and Ruth was very accommodating.
I didnât read the whole listing properly and was taken aback a bit when I found out there was an extra charge if you want to use the hot tub. Personally I think that should be included in the total price. The surrounding field is perfect to let the dog roam on its own as itâs fenced. Thereâs plenty walks to go on if you wish. If you want to get a meal at the local pub then book it well in advance as itâs the only one within walking distance. Ruth provided a pint of milk and a bottle of wine on arrival as well as tea & coffee, biscuits. And some doggy treats. A fully stocked kitchen with all working appliances and pots and pans, glassware you name it, Even a dishwasher with tabs. Board games, playing cards and books are also inside. Thereâs a handy utility room with a dog wash to the side thatâs a lifesaver. The fact it is adjoining to the barn meant that when our neighbours got up from the table and moved their chairs they scraped them across the floor which happened frequently and disturbed our peace. They had children too that added to it and a dog that randomly barked. You can hear everything next door. All in all it was a great place to stay. I would definitely recommend and I would go back again. 4.5* / 5

Absolutely fantastic property, immaculately clean and beautifully presented with a very generous welcome pack.
Ruth met us on arrival and took us through the property showing us everything and also some great historical facts reference the barn. Her enthusiasm for the area and recommendations meant we had some wonderful days out. Perfectly located for a tranquil and peaceful getaway while allowing easy routes in all directions for great exploration of the lakes and further a field. We would love to return next year and will be recommending this wonderful accommodation to family and friends. We had our 2 pooches with us and had access to dog shower and washing/drying room with dog treats, towels etc. We were visited by red squirrels, wood peckers and tree creepers. The hot tub of an evening under the stars & Milky Way as well as being able to see the Northern Lights was incredible! An absolutely Perfect Week away!
