Cosy Ambleside Cottage sleeping up to 5 guests

S72311 is so named, as the cottage is the front part of the Grade II listed church with the church tower. Located in part of the conservation area known as Chapel Hill and How Head, there has been a church on the site since 1550, but the current structure dates from 1812 when it took on a more Gothic style. Surrounded by the village’s oldest houses, S72311 benefits from being in a quiet location surrounded by shared gardens, while only a short walk away from the many shops and restaurants Ambleside has to offer.

The cottage is comfortably furnished, carefully mixing modern luxuries while retaining original features, from the solid studded door to the arched church windows. Set over three floors, the property is spacious and quirky. The twin room on the top floor will capture children’s imagination as they look out of their bedroom window over the castellated roof to the fells.

Ambleside sits on the northerly end of England’s longest lake, Windermere, so why not enjoy a cruise, or if you are feeling a bit more energetic, why not hire a row boat. Just down the road is the Armitt Museum and Library, which houses a large number of exquisite botanical watercolours donated by the artist herself, Beatrix Potter. Across the road from here is the Bridge House, a tiny two-room, two-storey house dating from the 17th century, and once home to eight people! Beach 20 miles. Shop 250 yards, pub and restaurant 150 yards.

"To make the holiday accommodation a higher score in needs WIFI,cereal bowls and instructions for cooker etc. Saying that it was a great stay."
    Prue – 19 Oct 2018
"We enjoyed the chance to stay in this unique property that is well located for easy access to everything that Ambleside has to offer. We were slightly disappointed to find that there was no access to the top of the tower (implied by one of the photos on your website) but other than that had a great week there."
    Simon – 28 Sep 2018
"S72311 has the basic equipment, comforts, space and location for a good stay but is let down by small things e.g. no cafetiere. The housekeeping needs a review since there were two light bulbs and a smoke detector battery needing replacement which required steps to change (none available). Both taps to the basin in the bathroom would benefit from being tightened. The location is convenient for the town centre and having separate grounds and private parking a definite plus. No internet is a mixed blessing."
    RACHEL – 7 Sep 2018
"This was our second stay at the S72311 and I would definitely return for a third stay!"
    Laura – 3 Aug 2018
"We loved S72311, kids had the upstairs twin room and thought it was fantastic with its cubby holes and accessories to old clock housing in the Tower. We banned them from climbing up into the belfry though! The bathrooms were lovely and clean and the showers were powerful and hot. There is a washer dryer in the kitchen and a separate dryer in the bathroom so no problem getting wet kit and towels washed and dry quickly. We stayed here during an exceptionally warm spell and the thick stone walls and cool slate floors were very welcome. The dog was comfortable for the first time in weeks. I’d recommend some slippers if you don’t like cold feet though. Also, if you have very young children be aware that the twin bedroom has direct access to an open stairway (the door is at the bottom of the stairs). The location is excellent, Ambleside is a lovely village with everything you need (much preferred it to Windermere) and is only a couple of minutes walk down the hill. If you follow the road uphill (aptly called the Struggle) there are gorgeous views of the lake, the village and surrounding hills to reward your efforts, but this is quite a well used road and there are no paths on much of it so take care - we found it much quieter in the evenings for an after dinner dog walk."

"Loved staying in S72311 , better than we expected photos didn't do it justice on web site . Would benefit from Wifi but apart from that very cosy & quaint. Location brilliant as long as your fit due to steep paths up from town to accommodation no problem for us . Zak out dog enjoyed himself & the slate tile floors downstairs are perfect for pooches wet paws . Excellent choice of eating establishments & plenty of lovely walks on the doorstep. A brilliant central base for visiting other parts of the Lakes. Would highly recommend a stay in S72311 , hope to come back again ."

"Absolutely loved our stay here. It is a beautiful unique house with plenty of space, luxurious and comfortable rooms yet still felt cosy. We were a family group of elderly mum, myself and 2 daughters in their 20's having a girls only week. The only couple of things that stopped every score being 10/10 were that wifi would have been beneficial and it would have been useful to have appreciated how steep the hill up from the town was. My mum has severe breathing difficulties so couldn't manage the walk up from town. That said we had a fabulous week there was absolutely everything that we needed and will very likely return again."
    David – 25 May 2018
"Interesting property on many levels. Comfortable and well decorated. Beautiful view from the top floor bedroom window. Overall had a wonderful stay."
    Stephen – 18 May 2018
"Fantastic,!! Stunning views of church parallel to accommodation and S72311 was so picturesque, everywere we went was so beautiful, food and people was first class, if only you could move it closer to lowestoft?, we will be back."
    Linda – 7 May 2018
"The house was in a good position as far as local amenities were concerned butParking was challenging, to put it mildlyOne bedroom had no blind or curtain which rendered it unusable at this time of yearWi-fi is expected these daysA tap in upstairs bathroom turned the wrong way and was in danger of breakingPillows were awful-cheap and thin with two in one pillowcaseBath took so long to run I gave up, although I had allowed an hour before going out"

"lovely accommodation much larger than the photos which do not do this place justice. Everything you need available to make your stay a home from home. We will be returning without hesitation and we have already recommended it to our friends."
    Robin – 13 Apr 2018
"We had a great week at S72311. The location was superb - right in the centre of Ambleside, a feeble stone's throw from the delightful Golden Rule, and bang on the route for walking the Fairfield Horseshoe, which we did on a goregous day."

"Lovely cottage and would definitely stay again."
    ELLIOT – 23 Mar 2018
"Lovely place. Definitely would not be suitable for someone with mobility problems due to the steep bank to the place when walking back from town. We loved it"
    Simon – 19 Mar 2018
"Fabulous home from home in excellent location. Had all the amenities required in the house and looked lovely inside and our. Would definitely go back. Really good location for setting off on walks and very close to shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.Only my OCD niggles for tightening up dining table legs and towel rail prevented a 10 all round"

"Lovely building. Well equipped. The living room could get bit chilly with doors open. Very comfy couch and beds vary whether you prefer hard or soft mattress. good location if u don't mind walking up hill. Parking could be tough if u have a big car .I was ok as my car is a punto. very quiet. quick walk to local pubs /town. If u like to watch TV reception/choices can be sparse. No Wi-Fi if u need that .I loved it and so did my dog. would love to see pictures/know history of building."

"Lovely place to stay and great walks right from your doorstep"
    Andrew – 15 Sep 2017
"Too many things did not work. The radiator in the twin room, and the attached bathroom, both only got hot in the bottomtwo inches, full of air. Resulting in wet towels and cold bedroom, used the electric heater for 5 full days and nights. The bulb over the bathroom mirror did not work, making shaving hazardous."
    Jane – 1 Sep 2017
"The private parking is tight and very difficult to use with anything but a small car. It would put me off booking this property again."
    Caroline – 11 Aug 2017
"Excellent cottage! Well equipped and with lots of character. Walking distance of Ambleside shops, pubs etc. Only slight challenge was the road/parking- but we got used to it after a day or two."
    Zoe – 28 Jul 2017
"We loved the house and Ambleside. Things that would have made the stay better include:- Soap in the bathrooms. We arrived after a long journey and had to go down to the kitchen to wash our hands after the inevitable rush to the bathrooms- A dust pan and brush. We stayed with our dog, and swept up daily, but were forced to get the Henry hoover out to pick up the dust and hairs. The bag was full so this wasn't very effective and there didn't appear to be any spares- Bin bags and updated information about recycling and bin collection days - The mattresses on the twin beds on the top floor are fine for children, but were not very comfortable for adults- Wifi would have made it much easier to research activities in the local area and has really become the norm in holiday properties in this price range"
    Karen – 21 Jul 2017
"This interesting property is situated in an older, charming part of Ambleside surrounding by many historic buildings. It is ideally located with a wide range of shops, pubs and cafes only minutes away, as well as good walking into the hills. The property is characterful, rather than cosy (I would have liked a few more nods towards its church origins in the interior decoration, and some more rugs, drapes, cushions and throws), but it has an unusual layout on different levels which is sure to excite people who like to explore! The property had a good range of facilities and equipment which were of a high standard. I was pleased to discover a dishwasher (I'm not sure that this was featured in the original specifications) but there were no tablets, salt or rinse aid, and this theme was continued, in a lack of hand soap, washing up liquid, bin bags, a dustpan & brush, and a limited supply of toilet tissue.Although the property was sufficiently clean to a basic standard, it would have benefited from a deeper clean, around the taps, windows and mirrors, and the drawers of some storage cupboards did contain rubbish like old tissues and could have done with a sort out.The bedroom on the third floor is more like a suite, with the second bathroom only accessible by entering the sleeping quarters. Depending on the habits of the resident(s), this could reduce the number of bathrooms down to one for a large part of the holiday - especially if the room is given over to a teenager! As the property does not have internet access (which to be fair was clearly stated) it would be useful to have a bit more information; luckily we brought our own street map of Ambleside, which would be an invaluable addition to the information pack, but pub recommendations, days out, takeaway menus, would all be useful.Overall any negative comments could be quickly rectified and I would still recommend this property to other holiday-makers for a comfortable stay, quirky features and an excellent location."
    Alison – 14 Jul 2017
"S72311 is full of character yet equipped to a very high standard. The bedrooms were comfortable and quirky. It was great to have a dedicated parking space but it was tricky with a large car. We certainly feel fitter after our stay between climbing fells and the stairs! Our holiday was memorable mainly because of this wonderful property. Just one thing we would have liked was a dedicated sheet detailing rubbish collection and in particular how the local council provides for recycling. Our council has just issued up to date information on all aspects of recycling on a single sheet. With no wifi access in the property I could not go on online to check."
    David – 7 Jul 2017
"The S72311 was clean, spacious and comfortable. Hard floors downstairs meant we didn't have to worry about wet shoes etc after a long day's fell walking.the location is a perfect spot; just far enough out to feel quiet and secluded but only a few minutes into town with all the shops and facilities we needed. We'll definitely be going back if we get the chance."
    Peter – 16 Jun 2017
"S72311 is a great place to stay in Ambleside, being close to the centre but set back so that it remains quiet. The accommodation is spacious and well laid out for a family of five with bedrooms set out over two levels , with the advantage of two bathrooms also. The furniture and fittings are of good quality and everything is provided for a self catering break. The facilities are better than described as there is a dryer included and also a dishwasher. A superb place to stay, in a lovely position and handy for exploring the Lake District."
    Joanne – 2 Jun 2017
"Lovely home, very close to everything. Parking tricky but got used to it. Disappointed with no wifi but that was something else we got used to. We had everything we needed and had a great holiday. Little things that would have been nice, info on recycling and rubbish collections and some outdoor space, there are communal gardens but not directly outside the property so felt uncomfortable sitting outside someone else's door. But overall we had a lovely stay."

"Beds a bit soft. Kitchen equipment - saucepans, frying pans, too small for cooking for 5."
"I visited S72311 with my elderly parents and although most of the facilities provided where very good the beds in the double and twin room were not very good quality and very low, which caused them difficulties getting up. More cups and glasses would have been useful. We did have a couple of minor issues which were very speedily dealt with by the letting agents."
"S72311 made a quirky and comfortable home for our visit to Ambleside. The on-site parking is a tad tricky if you've a large vehicle but it's free and the house is within a 5 minute stroll of the shops and pubs. The interior is light and airy, with all the amenities you need, though it would benefit from some extra homely touches (previous cottages we've stayed at had a guide to local eateries and board games for rainy days). Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a central Ambleside location, though you will need your climbing legs as there's a lot of stairs and the walk to and from town is very steep."
"Absolutely beautiful very relaxing comfy n cosy loved it!"
"Excellent cottage. Only niggles were: double bed too soft. Not much kitchen utensils."
"Brilliant place to stay, quirky in an old church, great location, home from home. Only negative feedback is Parking tricky with a big vehicle & need larger pans please. Otherwise perfect place to stay. Thankyou"
"Excellent cottage in a great location. Steep hills from Ambleside so not suitable for everyone. We will definitely stay here again."

"Fabulous stay at this wonderful house. Very happy to recommend!"
"S72311 is a lovely property and has been done to a very good standard. It is spacious and well set out. We booked this property last minute for a five day break and couldn't have been happier with the property and the pretty area it is situated in. Very convenient for walking, shopping and eating. We would return to this property in the future."
"Great apartment in lovely old building. We had a nice welcome message with some fizz and chocolates too. All in all very impressed and would definitely come again."
