What our customers say about their holidays

We have been booking with Sykes now for a few years and every place we have stayed has been wonderful until now.
We turned up half an hour before the allotted time but it gave us the opportunity to see where the cottage was before we went for a coffee. We got out to let our dog go for a quick walk and we could see the cleaner was still in the cottage. Well I say we could see, what we heard was a small baby crying and a man shouting expletives at someone (we think maybe another child). It was horrendous. We got in the car and went into polperro. When we can back an hour later it was quite clear that whoever is the cleaner is had spent more time swearing than cleaning. The kitchen was a a disgrace and we have photos to prove this. The cooker top was smeared and not at all clean. The cooker equally so with a baking tray inside with a puddle of grease on it. The floor hadnât been mopped and there was dust on shelves and cupboards with a sticky film that had been there for some time. We had to clean the kitchen before we were happy to cook in it. Upstairs was little better as the mirrors were all smeared and looked like they had been cleaned with a dirty cloth. The tv stand downstairs was also covered in dust and every horizontal surface was dusty and not helped with the amount of nick-knacks which had also not been dusted. The front door is a stable type but the bottom was not secured with anything as the bolt had broken and one which was missing completely. It could only be held in place by the top door. The hinge on the bottom door was loose so you had to really slam it shut. My husband did find a screwdriver and fixed this. The place also suffers from damp as there appears to be little damp course outside so rain water was held in place by the decking. Every cupboard we opened smelt musty and the area by the back door also smelt damp. I did buy a plug in room freshener to at least mask the smell. Not good when you are an asthmatic. All in all we were very disappointed with Sykes on this property and it was definitely cleaner when we left than when we arrived. Another security point. The key for the property was accessed via a key safe in the garage except the cleaner hadnât bothered to even change the code when he put the key back so as soon as I opened the garage door the key fell out.

The review covers two aspects- Sykes and the property.
1. Sykes. I would not recommend Sykes because the customer service is terrible. Having read the other reviews I am not alone in what I say. You cannot get a response from their phone number, it offers a call back which I am still waiting for 2 months on. The email is not responded to, only the text system and that took a real push back on my part to get any response. I am not sure what has happened to them but they clearly are only in it for the money and not at all for the customer. 2. The property. The property is lovely, and a beautiful location. However the customer service here is patchy. One one level you would think it is lovely, and yet the feel and tone of the information given to you at the property is negative. It feels like they spend far too much time telling you what not to do rather than what you can do. We arrived on a Sunday at 5pm, which is a very late check in. You receive the information by text how to get in literally at 5pm and all of the supermarkets are shut at this time. So we received our little welcome pack on arrival- 4 tea bags, 4 sachets of coffee, a couple of sachets of sugar and no milk, and for some bizarre reason you had to take your own tea towels. I cannot think why a small carton of milk and sugar would be difficult to provide- it was all so measured, and many of the notices in the house were negative in tone. we didn't use the hot tub but would have been put off by all of the instructions- about 9 pages. It is such a shame as they have a lovely property in a beautiful setting and a few little changes would make a massive difference in making you actually feel welcome at the property.

The bungalow is spacious, comfortable, well-equipped and spotless.
It is located down a quiet lane and has a large garden with a pleasant outlook over fields. It was very peaceful and we slept well, the bed being comfortable. There was always lots of hot water, the WiFi worked well and the Sky package provided plenty of TV viewing choice. The only suggestion I could make is for softer lighting in the lounge (perhaps a standard lamp or 2 table lamps) as the ceiling and wall lights are very bright. The owners are extremely affable and helpful and quickly solved a minor problem. They gave us a very generous welcome pack, which was much appreciated. There are 2 easy ways of walking into Kidwelly centre, the longer one being 1.4 miles. The half-hourly X11 bus (Swansea â Carmarthen) can be caught there. However, there is also an infrequent but useful Morris Travel bus to Carmarthen (service 198) which can be caught at a bus stop in Mynydd-y-Garreg, only 7 minutes walk from the bungalow. There is a large Co-op in Kidwelly and the 198 bus stops there, so we found that convenient. We had excellent lunches at The Red Lion Inn in Llandyfaelog, Florentino's (Italian) in Carmarthen and Nik the Greek in Burry Port. Apart from one wet day, we had good weather and remarkably on two days it was warm enough to sit in the garden till 5pm. All in all we had a very pleasant week and enjoyed exploring an area with which we were not very familiar. The bungalow is well placed for trips out and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Cottage itself was in a lovely location, pretty central for everywhere.
It had pretty much everything you could need utensil wise and everything was clean, well except the floor, I was wearing white trainer socks on arrival and when I went to take them off that night, they were filthy. I even had to clean the soles of our slippers because they were dirty when we left, and I have beige carpets at home. So not impressed with that. Also, thereâs no instructions for anything, when weâve stayed at cottages in the past, thereâs normally a book, with everything you need to know, how to work the heating, WiFi code, how to use the oven etc. took us 2 days to realise there was in fact a microwave, which, I must say, is pretty dangerous, as itâs above the oven and grill, so if your short, you either need help, or youâll wear whatever youâve heated up, not very practical. Couldnât find a washing machine either? Again, no info in cottage. The rooms are comfortable, but if youâre in the twin room, you can hear everything in the toilet. Also, I think people who had stayed previously had had dogs with them, as Iâm allergic and had a reaction as soon as I walked in. Might be worth giving the place a proper good clean and change blankets that dogs have probably sat on, especially if your next guests arenât taking dogs. Overall we had a good stay, but would we come back? For the location, definitely!
