What our customers say about their holidays

  • Katie - Verified booking

The initial property we booked was cancelled with just a few weeks notice, and there was little left within our price range for the area we had booked to stay which left us with limited options.

This property is a nice location, only a ten minute walk from St Ives town centre and a five minute walk to a local Co-Op store. The house is well equipped in some areas. The kitchen has good appliances and plenty of cutlery and crockery, as well as a Nespresso coffee machine with some pods. There is also a washing machine and dishwasher. There are some towels for use, though I recommend taking your own as they are only smaller hand towels and wash cloths. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, with plenty of storage space. There is a small outdoor area which is useful for pets, and would be nice in the summer months. The furniture is comfortable, and the property is well decorated throughout. There are some areas of the property which I feel should be better advertised or require improvement. Though parking is advertised, it is a very narrow side street and parking as close as possible to the property on the pavement. We had a larger car and had a ticket left on it by the refuse men that despite our best efforts, they couldn't get past. Other cars also use this road and it is very tight so a high risk of damage to your car. There is a car park a few minutes walk away but costs £16 for 24 hours. Despite the cost we opted to park here rather than outside the property. There is a television in the living room but has no aerial signal, and limited online apps available via a Now box which all require extra cost and are seemingly logged into the owners accounts which feels invasive when trying to use online apps. Some areas of the property have lovely touches, such as the pictures and prints around the house. But there are some areas which are clearly not well looked after. The tap on the kitchen falls off, the dishwasher rocks around as it is too small for the space it is plumbed in, and there are drafts from the windows which are older designs. The bin outside is also screwed shut so you cannot throw rubbish away properly, and due to the wind we didn't want to just leave it there incase of it blowing away, which meant we had to store bags of rubbish in the kitchen until we checked out. There is an upstairs bathroom with a very small shower cubicle, but there is a downstairs bathroom with a bath and larger shower area. Also quite bizarrely on the morning of our checkout as we were cleaning the property, we heard drilling sounds from the side of the house. Someone had appeared and then disappeared without calling in. It was only evident as we were about to check out that they had removed the lock box on where to place the keys without telling us, so without any information, we locked up and posted the keys back through the letterbox. Overall the property is a lovely location, and has some nice personal touches, and is well equipped. But there are some areas which require improvement, and the ability to park should be clearly marked that larger cars would not be able to safely use this facility.

The property was not cleaned properly.

Though the bedrooms and bathrooms were clean, the living room and kitchen were neglected. The sitting room had not been dusted or hoovered. There was filth on the carpets, remains of food under the furniture, crumbs on coffee table, and the floor had not been swept nor washed. In the kitchen, the floor was filthy: remains of food on floor, sticky, crumbs, sand etc. Whoever cleans this property is of the school of - clean around furniture, but ignore underneath. The counter tops had perhaps had a quick wipe with a cloth at most, but once again, if a cloth was passed on the counters, the items standing on the counters were not moved, so whatever remains were there from previous users. On the kitchen island, the cleaner was kind enough to leave a covered cake stand, empty but for some leftover crumbs. The sieve in the sink had remain of food. We contacted Cornish & Devonshire customer service immediately upon arrival in the property and asked that a cleaner be sent to rectify. I also tried ringing but there was an answering machine telling me I would need to hold for over an hour! After sending several emails, I received an email with an saying: we apologise but hope you enjoy the rest of your stay. I sent another email demanding that the situation be rectified, as an apology is not a resolution, and that we would make sure that we would stay away from the cottage while a cleaner came in to enable social distancing. I also said I would file a form complain. The next day I received an email saying my complaint has been passed on to someone else. I sent this person another email explaining what the issues were. I heard nothing back. On Thursday, a day before leaving the cottage, I contacted the complaints department again and reiterated that I would be raising a formal complaint on my return, as nothing was done to rectify. I received another email with an apology: "I can only apologise for the cleaners not coming round to resolve your complaint, we have reported it to the local office twice and was informed by them that the cleaners were going round on the 18th to resolve this for you." We have been staying in cottages for many years. On a couple of occasions were there has been an issue, these have been resolved quickly. This was not the case with customer service of Cornish & Devonshire Cottage Holidays.

This was our third visit to Swallows Nest, Morvah.

Unfortunately, this time, we noticed a decline in cleanliness and maintenance of the property. On arrival, although the floors had been washed, there was a lot of wet puddles, resulting in soggy socks…..as we always remove our outdoor shoes on entering. We had to mop up in the lounge and kitchen. There wasn’t any clean tea towels, only three wet dirty ones, which I had to wash before use. There was hardly any toilet paper on the roll holders to use before we did a shop. We’ve always had a full unused one previously, and it’s not hygienic to use someone else’s leftovers. There wasn’t any antibacterial hand wash in the downstairs bedroom shower room. The bedroom also had cobwebs and lots of dirt and dust behind the bedside tables and on skirting boards. It looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for months. Also, more importantly, the outside bedroom wall has black mould spores going quite a long way up. I know that can be contributed to people not using the shower room fan or opening windows, but it does need treatment. It’s not healthy to sleep in these conditions. The dining room carpet has quite a few stains, which could easily be cleaned. Also, the door into the garden was very difficult to open, we had to oil the lock after several attempts. I think both bathrooms need the tiles re-grouting as they’re looking quite grubby. There also needs to be a privacy blind in the upstairs bathroom. We had to cover the bottom half of the window with a towel! We also missed the usual complimentary cream tea on arrival, which was a godsend after a long journey. Would rather have gone without the huge bag of sugar, handful of tea bags, coffee and biscuits.

The following is a list of little things that would have made a big difference.

Clear and specific directions for finding the cottage without a sat.nav. A warning that the off-road parking is very awkward, only suitable for a small car, that the washing line should not be up when accessing the space, and there is a drop to one corner at the back of the space. A warning about the stone slab in front of the front door - which is not obvious in the dark and rain. Advice to leave a light on when returning after dark, as the hall light switch is behind the front door. Including the wifi code in the guest handbook - to save upending and reading the router. A hook in the bathroom for robes, etc. A bath mat and a bath safety mat. Somewhere to hang wet towels in the bedrooms. All the towels are white and we did not want to share one another’s by leaving them in the bathroom. A set of dessert sized bowls - all the existing bowls are enormous. There are plenty of mugs, but cups and saucers.would have been welcome. Place mats to protect the good table under the wipeable cover. Actual problems. The conservatory roof is leaking and there were puddles on the floor when we arrived, The outside light was not working. Several double-glazed windows are blown: two in the twin room, one in the bathroom and some in the conservatory roof. The large green recycling bin was already absolutely full when we arrived. The bathroom soap container was empty. I’m sorry to be so critical, but with a little more attention to maintenance and a relatively modest outlay on a few extras, this property could be so much better.
