What our customers say about their holidays

    The actual lodge was tiny.

That's OK but for a tiny lodge it was still dirty. The frying pan was unwashed, the floors were dirty, the tops of the wardrobes were very dusty, the lampshades were dusty and one of the pictures had come adrift in its frame. As a base for doing other things, it was situated in a good location. The actual gardens it was in were very tranquil and lovely to sit in. The bed. This was tiny. My wife and I had the space of a pillow width each to move around in and, invariably, it was tight and uncomfortable at night with some heroic bruises. I have arthritis and the space made it impossible to get really comfy so I spent a couple of nights on the small sofa. The DVD had no remote that I could find so that went by the by. The TV was ok though. Further Niggles: The cabin was VERY dark and I had trouble shaving in the bathroom. The small light in the kitchen was flickering on and off constantly. The oven had the control printing virtually faded off so it was touch and go making food. Ended up burning food as the fan oven feature that was so hard to make out turned out to be a grill. Also, no working bulb in it. The shower was nice but the door kept popping off its runners. And no washing machine. The general consensus? The lodge was a good base. Apart from its flaws it was warm and easy to access with basic facilities. Was it good value? We got it for a good price and it was worth it. Just fix the niggles! I don't like publishing them but as an honest review I would be remiss not to mention them.

This was a beautiful warm large comfy house .

Great for large groups with the bar, games and space and we did on the whole have lots of fun . The owner was lovely and contactable (but only after paying full amount ) and whilst in the property. However , I cannot say the same for Sykes who did not return any of my calls or emails when I had pre- concerns about the configurations of the rooms. I would have changed to a larger house if I could have but they would not reply or help until it was too late ! ( I add I tried from August until November) We had 12 couples and I needed 12 doubles . 1 of the rooms was a child’s room ( off the family double) sharing a bathroom and not big enough for adults so 2 of my guests had to sleep on sofas which marred the experience a little. The hot tub did not work and we had to borrow extra cutlery from the adjoining garden center but these are minor things and I would certainly return if they were rectified ( although not with 12 couples and not through Sykes ) sykes, if you are reading this please check your complaints emails , WhatsApp’s and telephone chats as well. One man I eventually spoke to did promise verbally to look into my concerns and reply to me before I paid the balance but he never did . I did eventually get 1 email ( once it was too late to cancel ) stating that there were 13 doubles and no one would have to share but this information was in correct . A reply would at least be curtious .

The pool situation was joke, having so many cottages all trying to book their 45 minute slots is bad enough without the pool being closed for two afternoons in the week for private children’s swimming lessons!

! This was outrageous! Not only was it unfair on paying guests it also brought traffic and destruction to our stay. We could not park near our cottage due to parents of local children who came for their swim lesson, the instructor and parents of the children were loud and inconsiderate to holiday makers, we were trying to have a bbq while sitting opposite a line of parents waiting for their children to finish their lessons. This felt entirely money grabbing of the estate! And not covid safe either! If the pool is only available for a maximum of 45 mins per day IF YOU ARE LUCKY then this should be advertised as such as we would not have booked it for our family holiday. Other than this the cottage was totally satisfactory however I agree with other online reviews there was no luxury touches what so ever. The photographs are misleading. The prices for this cottage in 2022 are outrageous and it would require serious improvement to warrant them. We took a break from our farm in Yorkshire to visit grubbings and due to the “private” swimming lessons felt like we had booked a week in Piccadilly. Incredibly unfair and disappointing.

Very well presented, well equipped little cottage in the Grizedale Forest.

Larger than expected so plenty of space for 2 adults and 2 medium dogs. Kitchen has everything you need (apart from an ice box as the per the listing but that wasn't really an issue - just an observation) - plenty of crockery, cutlery, cookware, etc ; toaster, kettle, microwave, dishwasher and washer dryer. Bathroom has a lovely shower but the bath isn't really usable as such due to the size and shape. We only used the master bedroom which has a very firm bed and pillows. Hard floors throughout which is ideal with dogs as we could but our throws down to catch muddy/wet feet and run Henry and a mop around each day to keep clean. Loads of walking on the doorstep - you can follow footpaths out to Lakeside, the East side of Coniston and around Grizedale and Furness. Bardsea Beach, Newby Bridge, Ambleside, Hawkshead, Tarn Hows and Coniston all within 30 minutes drive. Points to note : - the stairs are steep, narrow and painted so non-slip footwear is a good idea - there are no local shops (if you need milk, bread, veggies, etc) so take all you need or stock up on your travels

We had a lovely stay at the Turn Cottage, really enjoyed our holiday there!

Pros: -location is very good, no noise from neighbours - very relaxing holiday! -cottage is very well decorated and equipped -bed is incredible, very comfortable -owner is very responsive if you have any questions -the owners have prepared a very detailed user book, with all the information you need (from what to do to check out, places to visit around and how to use the appliance) - Kitchen, bedroom and bathroom were very clean. Cons: -quite far from shops, roads are quite small around the cottage -parking wasn't clear to us - I would strongly suggest adding a diagram to explain in more details how to park in the shared courtyard -cottage was generally clean, but there were dust and (dog?) hairs on the floor / sofa in the living room - hence the rating. -there is quite a strong dog smell in the cottage, which might bother you if you don't have a dog/don't like the smell. The owner likely tried to remove the smell before we arrived as the smell was not as strong at the beginning, but it did come back over the days even though we do not have a dog.
