What our customers say about their holidays

  • Linda - Verified booking

From entry it felt very comfortable & homely.

On arrival we had a small very welcome pack with teabags, milk etc. We also had a wee bonus of Welsh Waffles which I absolutely loved & Welsh cakes which my mum scoffed. There was even washing up liquid, washing powder & cleaning sprays. There was a couple of bottles of hand sanitiser in the kitchen & dettol soap in the bathroom which I thought was a nice thought due to the safety measures. The kitchen is large enough for a big family to sit 6 around the table & 2 at the logburner.& was well equipped - more than enough that I had a favourite cup! There was plenty of wood & coal for both fires to keep going, though I bought 2 packs more at end of week (which I didn't use but left for the next guests). I absolutely loved the log burner which doesn't need many logs, as a few smokeless coal nuggets kept it glowing for ages. We took my 2 small Yorkie's for their first holiday to Wales & for the first time I could open the back door & know they were enclosed. Small as they are, they climbed up the stairs to the garden & ran around the top garden grass area & I could watch from the kitchen window. It was ideal hanging out my washing as we had amazing weather. There were no issues at all, we respected it like it was our own house & the owner kindly text me just in case there was any issue he could resolve whilst we were there - but there were none at all. The local shops are just a mile in the next village in Blaenau Ffestiniog & R.S McColl staff were very friendly. The Llechwedd Slate Caverns (deep mine tour) is just at the top of the hill - (I thought it was miles away). I could go on - as we had a great holiday though we were careful when we went touring about to Llandudno, Pwllheli, Porthmadog, etc. I'd couldn't recommend 'Ty Gwynn', Tanygrisiau enough to anyone looking for a quiet location to 'go home' to after touring about & it's got it's own local walks for the dogs & own small railway station.

I appreciate that we stayed in August but I thought the cottage was overpriced for its location and what it offers.

There was also a distinct smell or something in the air when we arrived. We were a party of 5 adults who are all used to, or have our own dogs ( did not bring them with us) but the damp dog ( or possibly cat) smell in the air was palpable on arrival. The cottage was clean (apart from air) but there were some surprises (bread left from previous visitors in the freezer, dirty wine glasses in the cupboard and bulbs gone in a couple of lamps) which given the cost of renting it, should have been checked. We were also disappointed by the lack of / difficulty having enough hot water for 5 adults to shower after returning from climbing Snowdon! Again having to switch a hot water ‘booster’ on for 60 minutes first is not ok for the cost of renting this property. I think this is a sweet cottage, it is slightly fussy in decor for a holiday rental and could do with some decluttering and it is also only just big enough for five adults. I would think it more suited to 2 adults and 3 kids. Although bedroom space is fine the lounge is small and one bathroom an issue for a larger group. The saving grace was the kitchen, which was a super size. Our instructions before were clear and helpful. I have stayed in a Sykes cottage before and thought it was super, this unfortunately I was underwhelmed by and did feel disappointed considering the cost. My feedback is intended to be helpful to the owners ( changes are quick and easy to fix) and not at all intended as a rant.

We returned to this cottage after a lovely stay last summer, this time for 2 weeks.

On arrival the cottage was as expected, clean and welcoming (no doggy smells or dog hair!). The bedrooms were tidy and cosy, shower was fine. The kitchen is very large, plenty of room to play a game of scrabble or cards, as we did most evenings. There is an instruction book for bin emptying details and the workings of any appliances, also a book recommending days out. The garden is huge and lovely to sit in in the afternoon when the sun peeks through the trees. There are beautiful views of the mountains in town and many lovely walks to explore. We also visited the ponies over the road daily, the all brown one being friendly and running to see our dog, the brown and white is more shy. Despite the rain this time we went out every day on a walk or to visit a local attraction and looked forward to getting back and warming/ drying ourselves in front of the open fire! My sons favourite part was to light the fire and play games, our dog enjoyed sprawling out across the kitchen floor after a walk and sneaking up on the fake sheep in the garden (he thought they were real!), I personally loved seeing the bats fly over the garden as the sun went down and my Father liked to sit in the rocking chair in the kitchen with a cup of tea!

We enjoyed our stay and the location for local walks, trips out and amenities is good.

A car is essential as it’s over a mile by a busy road to the nearest shops. Some fantastic walks from the doorstep and the local history is worth looking into. There were just us 2 adults and our dog. The small single room is fine but the loft room has almost vertical stairs to it and wouldn’t suit everyone. We went November and discovered how used to central heating we are. It’s nice but a faff sometimes to have to make real fires which are essential for comfort in colder weather. Enough coal was supplied but there is a charge for logs. We’d of preferred the cost to be hidden ie put an extra amount on the booking fee. We’ve not had to pay for heat before in a rental. That’s just a personal preference. Other than that the cottage is faultless with a really well equipped kitchen and spotless bathroom (hot water pressure out of shower a little lane but manageable) All in all we thought it was worth every penny- we got it late and at a reduced rate because of that. Good correspondence with the owner, Nigel, and ideal cottage for exploring the local area but not one we feel for people with babies/youngsters because of those loft stairs.

Our short stay at Ty Gwynn was lovely!

The welcome pack was a thoughtful gesture and the cosy cottage was very clean with a well equipped and spacious kitchen with a log burner. The lounge was a good size and has ample seating with a coal fire (which we did not need to use) The cottage is a great place to use as a base for touring around this beautiful part of Wales. All three bedrooms were very comfortable. It has a modern bathroom with plenty of hot showers for our party of 5. There are fabulous views from the back garden to enjoy with enough seating for everyone. The owners had provided a great selection of games and DVDs and books and also an information pack with recommendations of excellent places to visit and local restaurants/pubs/take-away. The property is within easy reach of the coast and surrounding places of interest. It is in a superb location, very relaxing and peaceful! You can park your car outside the property and the neighbours are very friendly! This is a cosy warm and relaxing cottage and I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to chill out and admire the wonderful scenery!
