What our customers say about their holidays

We were delighted with our stay at Lavender Cottage.
Darrenâs welcome email was a lovely touch and provided helpful information about finding the property, local services and things to do/places to go. He also invited us to contact him if there were any problems, which was reassuring and thankfully unnecessary. The cottage is lovely. It had everything we needed, including the peace and quiet of a sleepy hamlet. Itâs a great location for exploring the coast, borders and Kielder as well as Alnwick and Cragside; had it been a little further from the summer solstice, stargazing would have been excellent, too. Thereâs no problem with parking on the road right outside and the majority of traffic we saw was flocks of sheep. Our basic checklist is a sense of security, a decent hot shower and a comfortable bed and Lavender Cottage delivered all three. Itâs cool when the temperature rises with very effective heating panels when it drops a little cooler. I expect that the fires in lounge and bedroom would be a treat in late autumn/winter. The kitchen was well set-up with crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment and lacked only a freezer compartment for ice cubes/packs, which is a minor concern. It was spotlessly clean and light with a good amount of space. Not only was the lounge a comfortable and relaxing place, but there were games and books for entertainment and we were able to login to our own Netflix account on the TV. Both bedrooms are beautiful and the master much more spacious than weâd expected. The addition of a hairdryer would make it perfect. We couldnât have asked for a better place for our holiday and weâre keen to return ourselves as well as recommending to family and friends.

The cottage itself was absolutely beautiful - undoubtedly the most attractive cottage weâve ever stayed in - including several National Trust properties.
We very much appreciated the welcome gift of wine, milk and biscuits. There were only a couple of tiny niggles that prevented an all round âtop marksâ score - and not all are in the owners gift to remedy e.g. the fact that the Queenâs Head no longer does meals ( however the bar staff and locals were all very friendly and the recommended alternatives were excellent - but a drive away!) The outdoor seating area of the cottage was tiny (extremely curious arrangement of garden space with neighbours) and only got the sun in the morning, so fine for breakfast - but also no space for comfortable seating. We would have loved to have sat out in the evening especially since the weather gorgeous that week - also because the stone walled cottage itself was rather chilly - necessitating putting on the log burner each evening. We use a log burner at home and found the one at the cottage hard to fathom out and it felt pretty inefficient despite it being enormous. Both of us would have preferred a slightly firmer mattress but fully appreciate that peopleâs tastes differ and you canât suit everyone. Lastly we were slightly concerned by the presence of some odd spore like material on the underside of the shelves in the main bedroom wardrobe. No idea what it was but somewhat unnerving. Sorry to be so picky - especially since we were, on the whole, absolutely bowled over by the cottage - and the village. We would certainly recommend it - and have done - (albeit with the above mentioned provisos) and we wouldnât hesitate to book it again should we ever need a place to stay in the area - weâd just pack more jumpers! Thank you.

We stayed at 19 Duke Street over Christmas.
The owners had decorated the place beautifully for the festive season and left us a lovely welcome pack including prosecco and mince pies. We stayed for a little over a week so got to know the house well. It was more spacious than we were expecting, all of the rooms (including the bathroom) are of a more generous size than we initially expected from a terraced house. The kitchen was well equipped, the living and dining rooms had everything we needed, and the beds were very comfy with lovely warm duvets, even though it was the middle of winter. At the bottom of the road is Barter Books where we could have spent our entire holiday just browsing. The rest of the town centre is just 5-10 minutes walk away, and Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Castle are each about 15 minutes walk (or a short drive of course). Alnwick is perfectly placed for exploring Northumberland's beautiful countryside and coast, and Duke Street is only 5 minutes from the A1 so it's easy to get around. There are convenience stores and a Lidl just around the corner, or larger supermarkets just a few minutes away by car. We were able to park right outside the house, although Duke Street is quite narrow so if like us you have a larger car you have to park it half up on the pavement. All the neighbours do the same though, so it's not a problem. In summary: we had a fantastic time at this property and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a short or longer break in this area.

This was the perfect house to spend four very rainy days in Alnwick.
If we had to be kept indoors with torrential rain, we couldnât have been more cosy and comfortable. The house is done to the highest standards, with lots of thought given to all our needs, It is spotlessly clean, with a well stocked kitchen, with absolutely everything you could need, a very comfortable lounge with a great smart TV, thereâs a fabulous bathroom, with nice towels and comfortable bedrooms, lots of storage and nice bedlinen,, For us, the icing on the cake was the Sky Lounge, a lovely bright room at the top of the house, with four huge windows letting in light and making it a warm a comfortable place to spend time reading and listening to the thoughtfully provided radio and when the rain cleared for out last morning, we saw wonderful views. We did manage to see Alnwick Castle, which was awesome and had an afternoon drive to the beautiful coastline near Alnmouth and the lovely village of Walkworth, where we walked by the river. So much to see and so and convenient for everywhere, We will be back to see more of all this lovely area has to offer. We might even get to sit in the pretty back yard next time!

We had a lovely homely stay at the cottage.
All the facilities were available. We enjoyed staying in a comfortable environment with family. We appreciated the welcome hamper. Only a couple of areas for improvement - the whirlpool bath didn't work but I don't think that was specifically advertised in the description, but it was a disappointment. Parking a large car at the front of the house was quite nerve wracking but we parked at the back of the house sometimes, where there was more room, so there was no real issue. The cottages location enabled easy walking access to the nearby town of Alnwick and its facilities. It was a good base to drive to other attractions in the Northumberland area. I'd definitely recommend the cottage to other visitors.
