What our customers say about their holidays

    Exceptional cottage home.

Location is key, and this incredible home has it all in abundance. Never would you think your a stone throw to a town, This home is a hidden gem! From out of the front gate turning right through the arch .. boom! Your in the town. Morrisons accros the ways less than 1 minute.. and an abundance of shops to gouge into. Including a Subway! My favourite snack. It's so quite here, you wouldn't expect it. Opposite is a church which every hour chimes and I personally found that very satisfying. The home itself,, Owners Have gone out of their ways to make sure you have everything you need. Gorgeous deco throughout. Beds are very comfortable. ( Only I myself didn't sleep well as I personally found bed too hard and gave me a sore back) But that's down to personal choice. I'm used to a Emma mattress which is soft and moulds to my body, Other two people with me , Father and his friend they both told me the beds were super comfortable. A very cosy home once central heating is on. The fast fibre and WiFi here is brilliant! You can stream anything without a problem. I brought my 4K fire stick so we could watch my sky sports/ BT sports/ Disney+/Netflix/Prime/Discovery+ and no issues whatsoever.. nice big quality 4k TV with great sound. The Owners here really have thought of everything for you. Only a phone call away should you need them and response is instant. We have had one of the best Xmas's here Alnwick is a wonderful place to go.. If your driving .. trust me you won't! Need your car, the bus station opposite.. the buses take you all up and down the East coastline. And the journeys are beautiful. Passing through gorgeous villages. We never used the car once we parked. We have been upto Berwick upon Tweed/Seahouses/ Craster/ Amble/ and other stunning places too. This Sykes home has to be in my top 3 most cottages to choose because of the home itself is immaculate! And the location and experiences are second to non. We're very grateful to the owners for allowing us into your gorgeous home. And hope you will have us back in the future. Thank you for us.

We booked 1 Wesley Mews to celebrate our Ruby Wedding anniversary, and reading the cottage reviews and seeing the pictures thought this would be ideal and, although a little more than we would normally pay, we decided to book it.

First impressions on arrival were good, roomier than we first thought, nice furnishings and warm and cosy. Very well situated for getting around and visiting the sites, and also handy for the bus station and local supermarket. However, during the course of our stay we discovered a few negative points, and to us it did not live up to the praise on the previous reviews, and would not call it "outstanding" as was stated on the website. There were several issues whilst there that needed to be looked at, and we contacted Glen, one of the owners, the day before we left. We had a problem with the mixer tap in the kitchen but managed to repair it, but notified Glen in case in needed further attention. We were asked if there was any damage and we confirmed that there was not. Whilst on the phone we also mention a few other things that needed attention. These were a toilet roll holder in the downstairs loo that was hanging off the wall, there were two chipped mugs in the cupboard, the ceiling light in the lounge had one lightbulb which never worked, and although two tea towels and one pan shiner were listed in the itinerary, we had no pan shiner and only one tea towel. The plinth under the boiler in the kitchen, which was resting on the fridge freezer, fell down every time the fridge door was opened. The grill pan wasn't the cleanest, whoever used it before us did not clean it properly, but it should have been checked anyway. Perhaps a roll of kitchen foil might be an idea. Finally, we had no change of bed linen, towels or tea towels for our second week at the property. So, after all that we have said, they are probably only small things, but it would have been nice if it had been looked after by the owners better rather than relying on the guests to look after it for them. We have booked with Sykes Cottages quite a number of times before and this is the first time we have felt the need to point out things that were not as they should have been.

Just returned from a family break, ( 19-24 Feb’ ’22 ) where we had all four units; Mill View, Newton View, St.

Cruz, and St. Dolmen, in the main block above the swimming pool. Whilst we generally found the accommodation excellent there were a number of ‘small’ but important issues/points that could be much improved in St Cruz ( and St Dolmen) for the convenience of the guests. All of which relate to basic storage facilities. The ‘Wardrobe’ is no more than a cupboard with no hanging rail. There are 2 bedside cabinets, but then nothing else. We had to revert to leaving quite a lot of our clothing in our suitcases, - on the floor. The lamps on the cabinets have long trailing leads/extension cables to connect to the nearest wall sockets , and the on/off switch unable to be reached from the bed,- a touch on/off lamp base would be more convenient. There is no small ‘coffee’ type table to utilise with the 2 ‘tub chairs’, just a small foot stool that is inappropriate. I would be nice if the television on the wall had a swivel mount, to enable it to be viewed from the bed. The bathroom storage is poor. It would be easy to provide an open shelf unit to the side of the sink, so there is somewhere to store all toiletries etc. The very small low table is inadequate. There is no storage for soaps/shampoo etc. in the shower unit, resulting in having to put toiletries down on the floor of shower tray, making access during a shower unnecessarily awkward. This could easily be remedied with a small chrome/wire storage corner unit. A seat/bench could be provided at the door and entrance to the four apartments to facilitate the removal of ‘muddy boots’ etc. rather than having to revert to sitting on the stairs. I have photos to inform/illustrate the above points but there is no way of adding to this 'feedback'

The swimming pool arrangements are completely inadequate and miss leading.

Our stay was for four nights. Of these we could only use the pool once, the first day our allocation was 6:00pm to 7:00pm, we arrived at 6:00pm as we couldnt check in until 5:30!!. One day we were not allocated any session, another day we were allocated 8:00pm tom 9:00pm not really feasible if you have eaten, and one day 6:00pm to 7:00pm. When examining the the pool log in book, the pool was very rarely used but we were unable to contact/find anyone at the site to see if we could use a different session/use an unused session. No welcome pack at all so remember to take everything you need as there are no shops open nearby after your 5;30pm check in. We rented a studio there was no shelf in the shower or in the bathroom to store things apart from a stool, very little storage for clothes, TV should be on a flexible bracket to be able to watch from a different angle as the roof line intrudes and you can not sit in front of the TV without cricking your neck. Ceiling needs to be painted in a slightly different colour from white to warn about banging your head, my wife and I are not very tall and this was still a an issue.

We had a lovely break and the property is in a great location.

Feedback - It would have been helpful to have been advised ‘before booking and before our stay’ that there was building works taking place next to the property on site next to the cottage. We sat in the hot tub to relax and unwind on holiday, to being next to a building site with loud noises of building works, of construction machinery drilling into concrete, walking under scaffolding to access the leisure centre. It started early morning and whilst we were there it wasn’t relaxing or what I had expected from a countryside holiday break. It was also difficult to find the property when we arrived dark at night when the cottage was on a different entrance and part of the road, which would have been helpful to know prior to travelling. The cottage itself was lovely, with bread, butter, milk & biscuits provided was a nice touch. Everything was in lovely condition, the pool is fantastic and location and views to the sea also great.
