What our customers say about their holidays
Michael - Verified booking
The property was superb, centrally located and extremely well equipped.
The only downside was the lack of WI-FI for the full duration of our stay. The property is advertised as being equipped with WI-FI but a check of prior reviews also noted âissuesâ so it was clearly still an on going concern and a heads up prior to our arrival would have been good so we could have been better prepared. However the first we knew of the problem was a hand written note left by LakeLovers advising that they hoped the problem would be rectified that day (Saturday 27th August) but that was not the case. There was no further communication from LakeLovers until we chased on Tuesday 30th following the Bank Holiday. We were told someone needed to visit the property to âcomplete set upâ and we waited in for some on the morning of Thursday 1st Sept however, no one turned up. We spoke to LakeLovers again and they, again, confirmed that they needed to attend the property so we waited in again on Friday afternoon for someone to come. This time someone did attend but was unable to rectify the issue. It was still unresolved upon our departure. We specifically booked the property based on the need for internet connectivity as I had work commitments during the week so it did make life somewhat difficult and impacted upon our stay based on our having to wait in for someone to attend the property. As noted prior warning from LakeLovers before our arrival would have given us the opportunity to prepare and to rearrange work commitments and we were also disappointed at the lack of proactivity from LakeLovers regarding what is clearly a long standing issue. LakeLovers also advised that a full case review would be conducted and we would be contacted in due course to discuss further, at this current time we are still awaiting contact and the feedback promised.

Book this cottage!
We nearly didnât book because of the mixed reviews, but please donât let these put you off. Acorn cottage is quaint and beautiful, you canât beat the location - 30 seconds walk in to Grassmere, and plenty of walks for all abilities from the door. Youâre only a short drive away from other areas of the lakes for day trips - Ambleside, Keswick. Parking is really no problem - we have a Honda Civic which fit with plenty of room. Outside there are two sets of garden furniture. The garden isnât secure so stick the dog on a long line. Inside the cottage is sparkling clean and comes with a lovely welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk sachets and biscuits. Thereâs also a little cleaning pack with bin bags, washing tablets and dish cloth. The kitchen is well equipped with absolutely everything you will need, the living room is lovely and cosy (especially with a roaring fire!) and the beds are very comfy. Heavy curtains perfect for winter and easy to use central heating. The shower is nice and hot after a long day in the fells. It would be a squeeze for 4 people but as a couple or family with children itâs perfect. We didnât use the Wi-Fi so canât comment on that, but hopefully youâre thinking of staying there as a holiday and not to work! Get out and enjoy the Lakes. We had a Saturday to Wednesday stay and absolutely loved it, we did so much and we could have done more. TIPS / NEED TO KNOW - Yes, the stairs up to the cottage are steep and not suitable for those who struggle with mobility - Bring a towel to lay on the floor for dirty shoes, thereâs a shoe cupboard but limited room - You will need: logs, more toilet roll, washing up liquid, salt and pepper, cooking oil, milk - Tweedies is the best for food and drinks

First of all, we did enjoy our stay, it's a wonderful location and ideally placed for exploring the area without having to drive.
The facilities that have been fitted into a very compact space are excellent, and the property is well fitted out - the custom carpentry is very impressive! The kitchen has everything that could be needed, with the single exception of a rolling pin (I used a wine bottle). Both the bathroom and the bedroom suffer from very low ceilings. The photos in the listing do show both rooms as they are, but it's difficult to get an idea of just how little headroom there is from the images. It's not possible to sit up in bed and have a cup of tea, for instance, as the ceiling is too low. The bed is very comfortable though. In the bathroom the only oart of the room which allows a normal sized adult to stand up is the strip between the door and the toilet - other than that bending over is required - an inconvenience when using the sink. When we arrived there was a cleaning welcome pack - nice idea, but not well executed. It had dishwasher tablets (there is no dishwasher) and bin bags that were far too big for the small pedal bin in the kitchen, and no washing up liquid. This was rectified with a trip to the co-op, but the contractors doing the servicing were clearly not paying attention. Also there was one roll of tolet paper provided - this is not enough for two people, for a week. It was a nice touch to put up some festive decorations, we appreciated it. Although we came prepared as we have a log burner at home, it would also be a nice touch to have an initial supply of kindling & logs for at least one night. The information pack with local walks was very useful and got us to do some walks we wouldn't otherwise have attempted. But why in the list of pubs & restaurants is there no mention of the Swan? It's the nearest & we had a very good Christmas dinner there!

Acorn Cottage in Grasmere presents a bit of a conundrum!
It's evident that the owners spared no expense in renovating and refurbishing the property to a high standard several years ago, with top-of-the-range white goods in the kitchen and quality furnishings throughout. However, time has taken its toll, and the cottage now appears quite worn, with an urgent need for a full redecoration and soft furnishing replacements in several rooms to restore it to its former glory. In addition to requiring a complete redecoration, it needs a thorough spring clean to refresh its appearance. The paintwork, windows and doors are all quite grimy and necessitate attention beyond the customary cleaning after guest departures. If we had our grandchildren with us, we would not have felt comfortable placing them in the stained and unclean highchair. Additionally, the property's eco credentials are less than ideal, as all windows are single-glazed, and prone to being cold and draughty. At the outset of our stay, we discovered that the TV aerial cable was damaged, resulting in no TV reception. We contacted Lakelovers in the morning, and their maintenance personnel promptly replaced the cable within a couple of hours - full credit to them for their efficient response. In the meantime, as the WIFI signal was good, we were able to stream Netflix, iPlayer, etc to our devices. Despite its shortcomings, we found the location of the property to be ideal as it was just a short walk from the charming centre of Grasmere. We enjoyed our brief stay there and appreciated the convenience of having a car parking space suitable for our estate car and being in such proximity to the cafes, bars, and restaurants made our short stay even more enjoyable.

Such a charming little cottage and I would definitely return if staying in this area again.
We had 3 nights, on one of which we stayed in and cooked Italian and lit the log burner, and it was so cozy. Everything was as clean as it could be (in a rural setting, you are going to expect little cobwebs) but the important stuff like bedding and towels, soft furnishings etc were spotless. Indeed, the slanted ceiling upstairs would be a challenge for taller people after a few days, and the staircase a challenge for less able bodied guests (although, access to the upstairs can also be achieved via the outside staircaseâ¦so this is fine!)â¦â¦but this little place was just magical. (Not really big enough for 3 adultsâ¦more of a couples or single traveller place)⦠A 5 minute walk to a lovely pub with excellent food (dog friendly), and a very pleasant few more minutes into the heart of Grasmere. There are lovely walks direct from the cottage, one of which we had the pleasure of seeing a couple of otters playing in the small lake. (And on the day of arrival, a red squirrel was in the cottage garden!) My only âmiffâ would be that there was no welcome packâ¦.I have used Sykes cottages several times, and most have left a little tray with the basics on arrival to have a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuitâ¦.but luckily we had our own. The village shop is currently (as at October 2024) being refurbished, so the nearest shop is in Ambleside. Highly recommend this little place!
