What our customers say about their holidays

Hi, We have been to Harrison Stickle cottage before, in 2023, so knew what to expect, as we so enjoyed our previous stay, it is a lovely property, with a fantastic view.
Unfortunately our 2024 stay was not so good:- 1 The general property and garden maintenance was not so good. 2 The gutters on the porch and roof at the front of the house were over flowing and pouring water over the steps on the porch. This meant on a couple of occasions, we got soaked just getting into the house. 3 There are no instructions (as far as we could see) for recycling. 4 The brown marks streaked down the front/porch area of the house suggest the leaking gutters have been like that for some time. 5 The gutter to the rear of the house overflowed, causing water to splash to the ground outside of the bedroom, all through the night! 6 The balcony was a bit of a mess, it looked dirty as the steelwork was covered in green mold and slippy! The owner warned us about the state of the balcony, she said it was rust. I cleaned a portion of the steel decking and that worked. All it needed was about 30mins with a power washer!!! that was very disappointing. 7 The door mat outside of the patio doors onto the balcony needs to be renewed, it had small plants growing out of it and it was pushed to one side. 8 The steel decking on the patio has a number of dips in its surface, causing water to seriously pool and that causes the green mold. A few drill holes would allow the water to drain away and the steel deck to dry out. 8 The wooden furniture was a bit of a mess, with paint flaking off the table and chairs. 9 The garden was very overgrown compared to last year. 10 The stonework/steps on the garden paths were crumbling/loose and displaced, making it a bit tricky and a bit dangerous for some! 11 There was no key (we were told that it was lost) to the secure bikeshed and the use of this bike storage is advertised in the brochure! 12 There was still no freezer, (we mentioned this last year) on the first day the owner mentioned that a small freezer would be set up, but that never happened. We never got any more feedback that week regarding the freezer. 13 There is very little storage for general food items in the kitchen. I hope this helps, kind regards, Mr A Garrett and party (26/8/2023)

Lovely cottage in a great location, lovely fluffy towels and comfy beds and pillows, however we found that some of the facilities fell short of previous stays elsewhere, both in the UK and overseas.
The lounge is quite big and yet the TV is very small (the ones in the bedrooms even smaller) with only the very basic programmes and the sofas are extremely uncomfortable with hard arms and cold leather. We were surprised that there was not a microwave, there was plenty of space for one. The beds, though wonderfully comfortable are very high, at 5â5â my legs did not touch the floor, not in itself a problem, but the bedside tables supplied are very small and you had to reach down to put on or get off anything off there which meant that a bedside lamp was impractical, in fact there were no bedside lamps, a great annoyance when getting cosy in bed to have a read before sleep to find that you have to get out of bed to turn off the wall lights which are too far from and to high from the beds. Moreover, should you need to get out of bed during the night, finding the wall light is extremely difficult in the pitch black, not forgetting that the bedrooms are at the back of the property facing wonderful but totally unlit views, fraught with problems there and a possible hazard. The blind in the en-suite had a broken âpullâ string which I discovered had been knotted together when it came undone in my hand causing me to stand on a stool so that I could make what repair I could, also an instruction that the blind could be lowered from the top rather than raised from the bottom would have been useful as Iâd never seen this before and it wasnât until I noticed there was a âpullâ string at both sides of the blind. As I first said, this is a lovely property which we feel for the price of a stay is let down by some of its facilities or lack of them. Parking is great, and we would stay again as overall we enjoyed our stay, atrocious weather notwithstanding.

Although the property is lovely with a great view very much as described, our holiday was left in ruins due to the building noise next door .
Fortunately we had a lovely weekend but were awoken at 8 am on Monday morning to really loud banging and then what sounded like heavy plant machinery breaking bedrock right next to the property which went on all morning until about 1 pm when we vacated the property as we couldnât stand any more of it. The owner had dropped by on the Friday evening we arrived and apologised for the building works and drilling over which she had no control. We had no idea of the extent of this, it was intolerable and we understood from the owner it could last until 8pm. We had looked forward to a quiet and relaxing holiday but by lunchtime on Monday our heads were ringing. Lake lovers offered to relocate us and we spent hours driving around looking at properties we didnât like which were either up steep hills on a busy corner with access issues or miles from where we wanted to stay. The area was very busy so I suppose all the nicer properties were already filled. We reluctantly gave up and went home. We had no prior warning of the building works and would have definitely cancelled and rearranged our holiday if we had known. I have noticed that a comment has been added to the listing now at the very bottom and wish it had been there when we booked or if at least we had been contacted with the option of rearranging even at the last minute. I guess it would be hard for the agency to give prior information on the extent of the works when the owner has no control over the building works or the noise but I would have liked to have been contacted beforehand and we could have rearranged and rebooked our holiday.

A very cosy, traditional cottage in the centre of Ambleside.
Parking for 1 car outside the front door. Extremely quiet location. Small rear garden is a bonus. Accommodation was clean and compact. The loft twin room has limited headroom (not great for my 5'10" daughter) and has no door but was warm and had comfy beds. The 1st floor double bedroom was spacious and the bed was extremely comfy. Lovely view of Loughrigg from the window. Lounge was cosy with a gas fire and 2x two seater leather sofas, a dining table and access to a very handy understairs laundry cupboard. Washing machine and tumble dryer were easy to use. The kitchen was small but had everything needed for cooking. The underfloor heating was in here only and was set at 16° but this was too low as the kitchen was always cold. A mild heat could be felt on the floor by the sink. Bathroom was airy, clean and warm as it housed the water tank and gas boiler. Shower was powerful and the bath was a much need bonus after a day on the fells. There is a separate lockable bike store if needed. Loads of books, games, jigsaws and dad's. The only negatives were the cold kitchen and that there were no curtains on the kitchen door or window and on the landing window (this had a net curtain with clear glass!!) I like privacy so stuck kitchen roll over the kitchen door widow and used tea towels on the landing window. We are already planning to return next summer. Overall we give the cottage 8/10

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Harrison Stickle.
The property was immaculately clean and very well kept. The photographs of the property and views, although inviting, do not do full justice to the actual experience. We have already recommended this property to friends and family. The location is perfect for local shops and restaurants as well as its proximity to the waterfront. If the walk home up the hill is daunting, there are regular bus services with stops outside the property itself. The facilities within HS are more than enough for a very comfortable and memorable stay. We decided the beds were the best weâve ever slept in and the property the best we have rented in the Lake District. We found a broom outside which we used to brush puddles from the balcony so that we could enjoy as much time outside as possible. One highlight was opening the bedroom curtains to see a deer grazing on the lawn! I did leave comments for the lovely owner (who we met on our arrival) including a question about the location of the DVD player - we found lots of films to watch but couldnât find the player! This certainly didnât affect our enjoyment and we would certainly stay again. We were a party of three and see the property is no longer available to be booked by four people which is a shame as we have friends who we would love to share this experience with and the property is certainly large enough.
