Holiday Cottages in Northumberland

Northumberland sits on the border with Scotland, a rugged county peppered With over 70 castle sites, including the mighty Bamburgh Castle. Combined with an extensive footpath network, 39 square miles of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Hadrian's Wall, and easy train access, it's no wonder that it is a hotspot for last-minute breaks.

Reasons to holiday in Northumberland

Beaches

Northumberland's beaches vary from small bays to long beaches, often with a castle or ruin nearby. These sandy beaches are one of the main attractions in Northumberland. But pack your coat as the battering winds and rain can appear seemingly out of nowhere. The dramatic weather and coasal vistas create an appeal that many are drawn to, especially out of season.

The most popular beach in Northumberland is probably in Bamburgh. With the vast castle overlooking the beach, there are great photo opportunities and at two and a half kilometres long, it's an ideal afternoon walk. At Last Minute Cottages we offer a wide range of coastal properties in Northumberland, putting you within striking distance of the sands.

Walking

Northumberland's main walking attraction is Hadrian's Wall. The 1,902-year-old Roman ruins remain, along with well maintained forts and other points of interest along the route. A large section of the wall is in Northumberland, with Roman towns like Corbridge just a few minutes drive from Hadrian's Wall.

There are several nearby towns like Hexham and Haltwhistlemaking it easy to plan your historical adventure with us, safe in the knowledge our best price guarantee means we always show you our cheapest available price.

Castles

As the nations most fortified county, these giant stone structures are hard to miss. Many of these buildings have a rich historical tale to tell and remain fascinating monuments to the history of Great Britain.

Alongside the aforementioned Bamburgh Castle, other sites worth considering are Dunstanburgh castle near Alnwick and Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, which is well worth the boat trip.

If you are planning a trip with friends or family don't forget to sign up to access our exclusive members only discounts, meaning you can bag a deal even at the last-minute.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Stephen - Verified booking

Everything was perfect and tranquil for us and our two rescue dogs.

We booked the property to get away from fireworks as where we live in Marske by the Sea we have two rugby clubs and two cricket clubs within two miles and they all have firework displays on different days. The accommodation was lovely and clean and there was an enclosed back garden so the dogs could go out there when needed. We were also impressed that the owners left us bacon, sausage, butter, eggs, bread buns and milk as well as tea bags and coffee. It was a thoughtful touch even though my wife had ordered a grocery delivery from Sainsburys to arrive an hour later. The driver wondered where he was heading but he knows next time. The location was superb lovely and remote, we could park and unload right outside and it was so quiet and we were fortunate to be blessed with sunshine most of the time too. We could come and go at our leisure and as National Trust members we found two places virtually on our doorstep (Wallington and Cragside near Rothbury) though we were limited to how much walking we could do due to a recent knee replacement operation. Amazing countryside with Rothbury and many other places not far away to visit. We will definitely be back in the future.

We really enjoyed our holiday and the cottage was beautifully decorated and very clean.

We really appreciated the free biscuits, milk and bread on arrival. The bottle of wine in the fridge was a lovely gesture too, although we didn't drink it on this occasion. A few minor improvements would have improved our experience: - somewhere to hang up our coats. - the sofa bed was pretty uncomfortable unfortunately. Alas, I fear this is just sofa beds, and it's no worse that others I have slept on. Mountains of cushions all over the place meant the place was very untidy in the morning. - we couldn't shut the bathroom window fully. - Because of the shape of the window the blinds didn't go all the way to the top and consequently the bedroom was very light. However, we understand that other options would detract from the lovely decorating. Worth bearing in mind if you or your children need darkness to go to sleep. - we didn't notice there was no dishwasher! Oops! These are all minor suggestion however. The cottage was well equipped, clean, and comfortable with a nice selection of books and DVDs too. It's a lovely village in a great location provided you have access to a car, and there is a lovely play park for the children a short walk away. Thank you.

We had a good feeling about The Old School room upon booking and, my word, we weren't disappointed.

Where do I start - The building on this quiet little road, facing the walled vicarage has been around since 1751. We were situated in what was the old reading room. It was a joy to behold. Small, but big enough for the 2 of us and plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Very well appointed for cooking (although we only had breakfast indoors), relaxation with many games stored away and topped off with Sky TV. The single beds were very comfortable aided and abetted with 2 fluffy pillows to sink into. We did a couple of walks from the doorstep and quenched our thirst and appetite at the Shoulder of Mutton, a must for Real Ale enthusiasts. The location is ideal for touring up and down the coast where we managed to concoct a few nice circular walks of varying distances. Morpeth, only 7 miles away, is a lovely clean & compact town with the Old Bakehouse off Newgate Street well worth a visit for a hearty lunch. It was our 4th visit to explore the beautiful Northumberland area and the The Old School Room will certainly feature in our plans.

The property was just what we needed to rest and relax.

It is so quiet, nestled in a lovely courtyard surrounded by horse paddocks. There are many places you can walk your dog around the site and can even say hello to the friendly horses who run to see you when you walk down the driveway. The house itself is perfect and so comfortable and cosy. It has everything you need and more with all the touches that make it feel like home. Everything has been thought of even down to dog towels and coffee pods for the coffee machine. The house is beautifully decorated and finished to a high quality. A lovely welcome hamper was left with a beautiful cake for us to enjoy. The hosts had thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable. It is close to many of the sites of Northumberland and makes it a perfect base to explore. The hosts were really friendly and approachable and nothing was too much trouble. We would definitely recommend this property to stay especially if you want a rest from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable.
