What our customers say about their holidays
Vivienne - Verified booking
I booked the cottage on the recommendation of your admin on "CHAT".
I asked for a cottage with a kingsized bed and 2 bathrooms. Horseshoe Cottage, near Wigton ref. 921599 was offered to me. I read the description on the website and although the heading said TWO bathrooms the blurb only mentioned one, so I phoned to clarify. I was assured that there were TWO bathrooms so I booked the cottage. When we arrived we discovered that there was only ONE bathroom and more importantly only ONE toilet. I asked for two as we need two for medical reasons! I immediately phoned Sykes office and was assured that the matter would be looked into and I would be kept informed! I learned later from the cottage owner that she had been contacted by Sykes and was blamed for giving Sykes wrong information! I was sent an email with a complaints reference number but other than that I have had no contact from your company. During the holiday, a few days after I had complained I checked the description again on the website and even then it had NOT been amended and was still advertised as having TWO bathrooms. And amazingly (or perhaps not) it is still advertised as having 2 bathrooms now 19:17 on 05/09/2019. We will have been home for one week tomorrow. I am not at all satisfied with the service you provide, My gradings are all connected with this issue. The cottage itself was comfortable but the problems and discomfort caused by having to queue for the toilet canceled this out for us. The facilities were not as advertised ie only one bathroom not two, so this also accounted for my low rating. However, if someone was to rent it and only require the one bathroom the place would be ideal with no problems.

We stayed here for the weekend with a group of friends.
There were 8 of us, 4 couples. The entrance is very welcoming, tidy and neat. The dining table was great. Ample size for us all. The lounge area seated 5 comfortably, 6 was a squeeze and the other two adults had to sit on a dining chair. Not great for comfort. We did say that in the bay window, they was possibly room for another lounge seat. The kitchen was great. Bright, clean with all necessities. The cinema room in the basement was an amazing addition although we didnât get a chance to use it. Kids and movie buffs would be delighted,Iâm sure. The bedrooms are beautifully presented and spacious, although the bedroom at the rear of the property was a little tight for two adults. The main bedroom with the roll top bath was so gorgeous! We all wanted that room, you could have a bath in the sumptuous bubble bath and watch the tv! Bliss. Bathrooms are also well presented, especially the shared shower room on the first floorâ¦amazing decor! The showers werenât power showers but the toiletries were a nice touch. Posh ones! Thereâs a tiny yard out the back, just for bins really but there is a nice seating area at the front of the house. Again, well maintained and tidy. We had a lovely stay at Woodlands and would definitely return. Itâs in a lovely quiet neighbourhood, only a short stroll from the centre of the village. Neighbouring Bowness a 20min walk or 5 minute car journey away. With the outstanding natural beauty of Lake Windermere right there. Breathtaking.

21st October 2023 I would have given 5 stars but unfortunately we had an issue with no heating for the first two days.
It was sorted out as soon as possible. Malcolm and the plumber were very helpful, but I had contacted Sykes before we arrived to check about the heating as a previous customer had said it had been an issue. The front and back door locks and the fridge door could have done with a little maintenance (also previously mentioned.) I do have to say tho we would return. Hillside Farm is a fabulous, spacious and clean property. The bedrooms and ensuites were huge with lots of storage space. Large kitchen and the two conservatories were a bonus ( so much room to spread out.) There are two garages available to be used with access from the utility room. We visited at half term in October but I would imagine in summer it would be great for children. There is an enclosed back garden overlooked by fields and sheep. Young children obviously would have to be supervised near the pond at the front as that was open access, but there were lots of rabbits and birds to watch. Kirkby Stephen was a short drive away with a large Co op, but Kendal was the nearest town with a Morrison's, Aldi etc. and more facilities. The train from Kirkby Stephen to Carlisle was a good day out and there are lots of walks nearby. I would recommend this property and would definitely return.

The house was beautiful, in a great location and the cinema room was a particular hit with the family!
The disappointments were the cleanliness of the property - for instance, when we came to use the coffee machine the filter was full of moldy coffee. This must have been like this for quite a while as the mold spores were substantial. Many of the dishes and cutlery also felt greasy. We were also slightly disappointed that there was not the usual Lake Lovers welcome pack - often we have received tea, coffee and other local produce but this was sadly absent. The other piece of feedback was regarding parking. It was impossible to park outside/near the property. On previous visits to the lake district we had been given a parking permit to enable parking in the carparks. This would have been helpful and would have added to the enjoyment of the holiday. If the above points were addressed then this would have been a 5 star.

The property is for 8, however the smaller 1st floor bedroom does not have any clothes hanging space due to the double bed - the wardrobe is outside the room down 4 steps on the mid-landing?
As with all properties the accommodation is non-smoking. It should be noted that the rear outside area is covered over and shared with the adjoining property. During our stay the area was used 'by others' for outside smoking? - No smoking sign would clarify the legal status. The split kitchen/dining area is not an easy to use layout. The table although a good size, has restrictive chair seating access. The front hallway has a mobile entrance mat that rides up and is a trip hazard. It should be noted that the instructions in accommodation book say the bed linen is to be turned back and not stripped as per the email read on our return. That all done with, the TV was great, the water pressure was good, plenty of cutlery, cups, plates etc.. The location was good for the town shops, park and Latrigg Fell not far away.
