What our customers say about their holidays

We had slight misgivings when we arrived in the dark, having taken a side-turning recommended by the SatNav before we got to Grasmere.
However, up we climbed, eventually finding White Moss. First impressions were that it felt very remote - not filling us with confidence given we wanted to eat out and use Grasmere as our base! BUT.... As it turns out, White Moss is only a 10 minute (downhill) walk from Grasmere centre - though a slightly longer uphill trek back :) This has the major advantage of White Moss being quiet, tranquil and blessed with the best views from any self-catering apartment we've booked. White Moss is the basement apartment in what was obviously at one time a huge and very beautifully appointed traditional slate walled house overlooking Grasmere and the fells beyond. Huge sash windows make some of the rooms full of light, with incredible views over the terrace. The bedrooms vary considerably in space - the twin relatively small (though fine), with one of the doubles absolutely enormous. The high ceilings give the place a real sense of space, which is good. The kitchen is very well appointed for self-catering, and the open plan dining room (part of the same large room) is great for a meal with friends or family. The decor is fine, if a bit tired in places (the bathroom could do with some modernisation for example, though is very adequate), but it's clean and certainly not something to put off visitors unless you want a perfect boutique hotel-type experience. For a good sized group of walkers wanting a comfortable, quiet and well-positioned retreat, it's perfect. Other amenities include wi-fi and a well-stocked cupboard full of board games - as well as the normal TV and DVD player (which we didn't use!) Our only two very small negatives were that we didn't have any hot water (from the taps) for washing up or hand-washing (the shower was electric thank goodness) and one of the twin beds had popped a slat (which I fixed). Otherwise, we were all very happy with White Moss and would happily book again.

Our stay was delayed until 4pm for supposed extra COVID cleaning.
The reality was the cleaner turned up at 3.10pm as we happened to be outside when she did . Consequently we couldnât get into the cottage until 4.30 as she hadnât finished at 4pm . She was obviously rushing as the house was dirty. The grill pan was so disgusting that the wife photographed it . In an effort to clean the cottage ourselves we got the hoover out . The smell from the hoover was terrible. I am not sure when it was last emptied but trust me we had to buy an air freshener after using it . The garden hadnât been tended to and was untidy. We had the plug in the bathroom sink stuck so I walked to the Heart of the Lakes office to report it as your paperwork said you were open from 10am on a Sunday. The office was locked with no one around. Finally after a phone call someone did promptly turn up and fixed the problem. We have stopped at this property before and on these occasions we were happy but the property is now looking a little tired. The beds are uncomfortable and the carpets particularly the stair one are very dirty.

We have just enjoyed a return visit to White Moss some 35 years since the last visit!
We found the apartment to be extremely clean, tidy and comfortable with very good facilities. Except for one important thing for visitors in cool / cold weather: This week has been very wet and cool (outside!), so we stayed in for quite a lot of the time. The problem is that the heating is just about adequate for a couple of hours in the morning and during the evening. BUT during the day it goes off, and the apartment gets pretty cold pretty quickly. There are instructions for swithcing on the heating "outside of programmed times" - followed these, but nothing happenned. I now think that as the heating is "programmed" to be off during the day, you can't override this. I should add there is an electric fire in the lounge, which we had on a lot! But everywhere else was uncomfortably cool - around 15 degrees during the day! My advice - take a couple of extra fan heaters with you and you will fine.

The flat was clean and the beds were comfortable.
I think the pictures of the outside area are very misleading. The approach to the White Moss door is very scruffy and quite dirty and there is no easy access to the terrace at the front - no useable outdoor space to enjoy the georgeous view. You can climb out of the sitting room window but obviously that was not satisfactory. Noisy neighbours started at 6:30 am, the insulation is poor. Even at this time of year the storage radiators were barely adequate. We arrived back from a hard day on the fells cold and wet and didnât really warm up until we went to a warm pub! Some strange omissions - only one toilet roll for 5 people!! and no hand soap in the bathroom. There is nothing drastically wrong but in general as we have spent many weeks and week end in the lakes it was disappointing and not good value for money compared with any other place we have hired. Adequate but not much attention to detail.

This is a beautiful little cottage in a perfect spot.
5 minute walk into town and just 5 minutes walk to the lake. Nice to see the ownerâs have listened to other feedback and put in a downstairs toilet in and the upstairs bathroom is lovely with its update. What did let the property down was whoever they have cleaning for them, they are letting this lovely cottage down. When we arrived my husband found himself cleaning large amounts of dog mess. On the upper path way and also patio. I do agreed this was also for the owners of the dog to do but should also be checked on. Paying what we paid I donât expect to clean up after others. Also we found the property could benefit from a good dusting throughout and found plates that needed to be re washed. On an overall we loved every minute of our break and we would book again. This cottage has so much going for it.
