What our customers say about their holidays

We had a wonderful week at Easby Cottage!
We were a party of 5 from Ottawa, Canada and Seattle, USA). This historic and tasteful property is a spacious 'home from home', with abundant modern conveniences and a large, beautiful and peaceful garden (we made use of the croquet set!) Thank you very much to the owners for the welcome items they provided in the kitchen, and also the advice of where to go in the local area. It was lovely to meet you! We loved Easby cottage because of its location: just steps to Easby Abbey, the river, and fields of sheep! Plus there were 3 different 20 minute-or-so walking routes into Richmond town centre (two via footpaths/bridleways, and one via the B road which has a pavement for pedestrians; the latter being the flattest route to the market square). One of our party ran also ran from the cottage up to Catterick via the cycleway. Two of us used the Richmond combined heritage ticket to visit the historic theatre, and the interesting and bigger-than-you-think local history museum; and we all had fun at Richmond castle (nice activities for the 9 year old in our party-her first castle!) Some of us like exploring the local byways so we walked up to the old race course common land above the town-great views (and marvelous for anyone with a dog!) Groceries we got locally in Richmond, or for greater variety at the vibrant Tesco superstore hub in Catterick. Further afield between us we went to York by train (from Darlington); Fountains Abbey and associated rare, historic gardens; Middleham Castle and pubs; Leyburn children's playground (great equipment for our 9 year old, plus picnic tables and wonderful views of Wensleydale.) We also drove to East Witton one day and took public footpaths with stepping stones across the River Ure to Middleham and back. Easby Cottage makes a perfect base for exploring this culturally rich and special area of Yorkshire, but is also perfectly relaxing for just hanging-out in! Very happy!

The words 'delightful' and 'idyllic' are not words I would use to describe this accommodation.
I stayed at Barforth Hall Parlour for a week whilst working in the area. My welcome to the cottage was being told by the owner on my day of arrival that check in was from 4pm and to bring my own towels, however this was rectified following my request that I was arriving at 3pm and did not have towels with me. Sadly on arrival I found the accommodation and facilities to be inadequate, basic, gloomy, dated, shabby and depressing. I usually stay in Sykes' accommodation whilst working in the UK so have sampled many different types of accommodation but this one falls far short of the standard expected. Desperately in need of a major make-over and improvements, it gives the impression that the owners just can't be bothered but are happy to take payment for offering sub-standard accommodation. I had to prop the fridge up using DVDs as it was leaning so much all the contents ended up at one side. Basic essentials of holiday accommodation were missing - oven gloves, hairdryer, iron, sweeping brush and pan, washing machine either in the accommodation or nearby, kitchen roll and only one toilet roll provided for the week and a half used bottle of washing up liquid. There was a washing line in the small courtyard but only 6 clothes pegs to use. There was a problem with the cold water which ran out which from reading other reviews, seems to be a recurring problem but the owner did rectify when advised. On the plus side the bed was comfortable, it was quiet and the internet worked well, although I lost my mobile signal as soon as I arrived at the cottage which was a problem. Sadly not somewhere I will return to and I could not recommend to anyone else.

This is a BEAUTIFUL cottage with a glorious garden in fabulous surroundings.
We really enjoyed our stay. Knowing that feedback is important and notwithstanding the above there are a couple of points. I wonder if it can be made known to potential guests that the quirkiness of the cottage means that the ground floor is not level throughout. There is only mention of the steps for the upstairs twin room but at night from the ground floor bedroom in order to access the downstairs toilet one must pass through 5 rooms on 3 different levels...they are only single steps but they caught us out on more than one occasion and our youngster also tripped on the shallow steps. A family with elderly relatives may think that a downstairs bedroom with a downstairs toilet would present no challenges but I think this might. The kitchen equipment was fabulous and plentiful (wondered whether the fridge freezer could be moved to replace the shelving in the pantry so that it is more accessible as it is currently quite some distance away from the working area in the kitchen) We hit the record temperature week (!) and noticed that we couldn't open the french doors in the main lounge and the rod for opening the various Velux windows was a challenge that we couldn't master but the ultra thick walls of the property served us well in the heat. Special thanks to Jack for his understanding. It definitely feels like a 'home' and our 3 generation family thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our comments are observations- not criticism or complaint.

We have had an amazing holiday at The Arches it really will be top of our list of Happy places to visit again very soon.
The Arches is so spacious but cosy at the same time. We are a family of 6 adults and a 21 month old toddler also we have 3 border terriers but we all had our own space to chill and unwind. The decor and soft furnishings are amazing and of the highest quality. The kitchen is so well equipped with the bonus of a washing machine, dish washer and large fridge with a large freezer. All of our beds were so comfy and it was lovely to be awakened by the cockerels morning singing. The farmers and their family included us as they went about their daily work, we and loved seeing all the farm animals especially the puppies and the piglets not forgetting the sheep chickens cockerels sheepdogs and cats. The Arches is absolutely spectacular and we canât fault it at all we have all arrived home with lots of ideas for home decor although ours wonât look a patch on The Arches as the beams and other original features are amazing. The perfect find for us. An excellent base to visit the Yorkshire National Park, Richmond, Harrogate,Barnard Castle , Layburn, Hawes and The Lakes. Thank you to the owners Angela and Graham for having us stay and being so approachable and contactable it was much appreciated. So if your thinking of booking donât hesitate as you wonât be disappointed please leave space for us to return though. The Best Family xx

We were uncomfortable at the Parlour, the lounge/bedroom area is very small with not a lot of space.
I've lived in a studio apartment for a few years & the Parlour was nowhere near as good. The fire didn't work when we arrived, we were given a portable one until new batteries were fitted the following day. The bed was very uncomfortable with a hard ridge right down the middle so neither of us slept well at all. The sofa not good either, uncomfortable after a while when either watching tv or reading. In the small shower there's nowhere for shampoo/shower gel, & not enough room to bend over to pick them off the base. On the Tuesday we ran out of cold water because the people next door ran off all our cold water, nothing we were warned about at any time, it was sorted out when we went out for the day. The directions we were given were useless, we drove round for over an hour without finding the place, after a few tries we managed to speak to someone who gave us a different post code that worked. The roads have no name boards, & Barforth Parlour didnt have any boards out either. It was so bad we actually left early, on Wednesday instead of Saturday, & it would have been earlier had it not been bonfire night on the Tuesday as we wanted somewhere quiet for our dog who is terrified of fireworks.
