What our customers say about their holidays

We enjoyed our stay at Malcolm Miller House.
The house is spacious and comfortable. The Christmas decorations were a lovely touch. It is in a very convenient location for accessing everything in Alnmouth on foot, from the beach, to the restaurants, and country walks, which is great. Unfortunately, the exceptionally windy weather across much of the week marred our stay: NOTE - this is NOT the fault of the owner, who goes the extra mile to ensure that guests have a fabulous stay. This is in relation to the ongoing building work near the house, which has been mentioned in other reviews as having no impact, but for us, this was not the case. Maybe it was because it was winter and the actual phase of the work itself?? The dedicated parking space is great, and most likely usually hassle-free. For us, it wasn't: the very strong winds meant that debris and materials from the building work were blowing about, and sometimes had to be removed from on and around the car. There were a few occasions when the work vans parked in our space and were requested to move for us. This might seem trivial, but given the limited public parking in Alnmouth, the dedicated parking space is brilliant. On other occasions the entrance to the parking space was completely blocked. The guys were very polite when asked to move their vans or let us through, but we felt a bit like an inconvenience to them. We were amazed they were even doing building work during some of the weather! We realise some of this irritation is unavoidable during building work, but given the compact area being built on, it does have an impact. Having said this, we would recommend Malcolm Miller House and would definitely return, though we would check first that the building work had been completed.

We were delighted with our stay at Lavender Cottage.
Darrenâs welcome email was a lovely touch and provided helpful information about finding the property, local services and things to do/places to go. He also invited us to contact him if there were any problems, which was reassuring and thankfully unnecessary. The cottage is lovely. It had everything we needed, including the peace and quiet of a sleepy hamlet. Itâs a great location for exploring the coast, borders and Kielder as well as Alnwick and Cragside; had it been a little further from the summer solstice, stargazing would have been excellent, too. Thereâs no problem with parking on the road right outside and the majority of traffic we saw was flocks of sheep. Our basic checklist is a sense of security, a decent hot shower and a comfortable bed and Lavender Cottage delivered all three. Itâs cool when the temperature rises with very effective heating panels when it drops a little cooler. I expect that the fires in lounge and bedroom would be a treat in late autumn/winter. The kitchen was well set-up with crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment and lacked only a freezer compartment for ice cubes/packs, which is a minor concern. It was spotlessly clean and light with a good amount of space. Not only was the lounge a comfortable and relaxing place, but there were games and books for entertainment and we were able to login to our own Netflix account on the TV. Both bedrooms are beautiful and the master much more spacious than weâd expected. The addition of a hairdryer would make it perfect. We couldnât have asked for a better place for our holiday and weâre keen to return ourselves as well as recommending to family and friends.

The cottage itself was absolutely beautiful - undoubtedly the most attractive cottage weâve ever stayed in - including several National Trust properties.
We very much appreciated the welcome gift of wine, milk and biscuits. There were only a couple of tiny niggles that prevented an all round âtop marksâ score - and not all are in the owners gift to remedy e.g. the fact that the Queenâs Head no longer does meals ( however the bar staff and locals were all very friendly and the recommended alternatives were excellent - but a drive away!) The outdoor seating area of the cottage was tiny (extremely curious arrangement of garden space with neighbours) and only got the sun in the morning, so fine for breakfast - but also no space for comfortable seating. We would have loved to have sat out in the evening especially since the weather gorgeous that week - also because the stone walled cottage itself was rather chilly - necessitating putting on the log burner each evening. We use a log burner at home and found the one at the cottage hard to fathom out and it felt pretty inefficient despite it being enormous. Both of us would have preferred a slightly firmer mattress but fully appreciate that peopleâs tastes differ and you canât suit everyone. Lastly we were slightly concerned by the presence of some odd spore like material on the underside of the shelves in the main bedroom wardrobe. No idea what it was but somewhat unnerving. Sorry to be so picky - especially since we were, on the whole, absolutely bowled over by the cottage - and the village. We would certainly recommend it - and have done - (albeit with the above mentioned provisos) and we wouldnât hesitate to book it again should we ever need a place to stay in the area - weâd just pack more jumpers! Thank you.

When viewing property details before booking it didn’t state dogs are not permitted to do their toileting in the yard hence hubby up early & out to take our dog for a walk to do her business in the street. A notice in utility room tells you “If your dog MUST use the sofa to use the throws provided please.” (Not exactly pet friendly wording). As it was we took our own clean throws and always do. We have rented lots of dog friendly properties over the years and have never had these issues before on arrival. This spoilt our holiday. BEWARE smaller bedroom door does not open properly as two singles crammed into a room that’s far too small for them. Should be a bunk bed or one single. I suffer with hip issues and hurt one trying to squeeze past the door to get in. Yard only has two bistro seats at table so no good if there are 4 people. Water pressure in en-suite shower was an issue. Previously reported by other renters but doesn’t seem to of been looked at. These issues aside it’s a nice property but would only recommended for two people and no dogs.

The holiday property was fine, but we were not impressed with Sykes Cottages Customer Service.
We rang on the Monday (20th May) to ask how to get the central heating and heated towel rail working; we were put on hold while (we were told) the assistant tried to contact Northumbria Coast and Country Cottages. However we held on for 15 minutes (at the very expensive mobile phone rate) but then gave up as your assistant had still not got back to us. (I would have thought it was standard procedure to come back to us after a minute or two to update us on progress, but apparently not so at Sykes Cottages!) The next day we discovered that Northumbria Coast and Country Cottages was just round the corner from our cottage in Alnmouth: surely your assistant could have told us this on the Monday? We then popped in to Northumbriaâs office, and their staff were very helpful and sorted it; however the gentleman we spoke to told us that Sykes Cottages had not rung them till the Tuesday, so goodness knows what your assistant was doing during the quarter of an hour I was kept hanging on on the Monday! IT REALLY IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
