What our customers say about their holidays
Matthew - Verified booking
We had slight misgivings when we arrived in the dark, having taken a side-turning recommended by the SatNav before we got to Grasmere.
However, up we climbed, eventually finding White Moss. First impressions were that it felt very remote - not filling us with confidence given we wanted to eat out and use Grasmere as our base! BUT.... As it turns out, White Moss is only a 10 minute (downhill) walk from Grasmere centre - though a slightly longer uphill trek back :) This has the major advantage of White Moss being quiet, tranquil and blessed with the best views from any self-catering apartment we've booked. White Moss is the basement apartment in what was obviously at one time a huge and very beautifully appointed traditional slate walled house overlooking Grasmere and the fells beyond. Huge sash windows make some of the rooms full of light, with incredible views over the terrace. The bedrooms vary considerably in space - the twin relatively small (though fine), with one of the doubles absolutely enormous. The high ceilings give the place a real sense of space, which is good. The kitchen is very well appointed for self-catering, and the open plan dining room (part of the same large room) is great for a meal with friends or family. The decor is fine, if a bit tired in places (the bathroom could do with some modernisation for example, though is very adequate), but it's clean and certainly not something to put off visitors unless you want a perfect boutique hotel-type experience. For a good sized group of walkers wanting a comfortable, quiet and well-positioned retreat, it's perfect. Other amenities include wi-fi and a well-stocked cupboard full of board games - as well as the normal TV and DVD player (which we didn't use!) Our only two very small negatives were that we didn't have any hot water (from the taps) for washing up or hand-washing (the shower was electric thank goodness) and one of the twin beds had popped a slat (which I fixed). Otherwise, we were all very happy with White Moss and would happily book again.

The cottage was a good place to stay for a few days, BUT, the toilet seat was broken and needs re-fixing, the front and kitchen door locks may need replacing as both were difficult to work and the blind over the window in the lounge once down, would not pull back up. I would have expected all of these issues to have been corrected before our stay. We were also surprised that the main "bedroom" is in fact an open mezzanine floor with a severely sloping roof making it uncomfortable to use and making it difficult to have any quiet from the lounge below, if someone wants to watch TV etc ... Finally, the cottage information suggests a "full Sky package" which is not true as it was not possible to access Sky Sports ... Please also be aware that we had to cut short our stay by 24 hours as "ElectricityNW" arrived on Tuesday morning, woke us up and advised that "the power was being switched off for the rest of the day. As the bathroom is an enclosed space needing electricity to light the room, it would not have been possible to use the kettle, electric hob, TV or WiFI we chose to leave on Tuesday lunchtime rather than stay until our planned departure on Wednesday morning. It is true that I received 2 voice messages (one left on Monday late afternoon and a second on Tuesday morning) to advise about this, but as Toffee Cottage is in an area with NO phone signal, these messages were not received until we got home on Tuesday afternoon! Surely it would have been good customer service to send WhatsApp messages and/or emails to advise this situation as I can only assume that your local staff would be aware that a phone message would not be received ... I will look forward to your reply and comments, but hope that you will consider some degree of refund / compensation for the situations described above. Many thanks, Steve

We have just enjoyed a return visit to White Moss some 35 years since the last visit!
We found the apartment to be extremely clean, tidy and comfortable with very good facilities. Except for one important thing for visitors in cool / cold weather: This week has been very wet and cool (outside!), so we stayed in for quite a lot of the time. The problem is that the heating is just about adequate for a couple of hours in the morning and during the evening. BUT during the day it goes off, and the apartment gets pretty cold pretty quickly. There are instructions for swithcing on the heating "outside of programmed times" - followed these, but nothing happenned. I now think that as the heating is "programmed" to be off during the day, you can't override this. I should add there is an electric fire in the lounge, which we had on a lot! But everywhere else was uncomfortably cool - around 15 degrees during the day! My advice - take a couple of extra fan heaters with you and you will fine.

The flat was clean and the beds were comfortable.
I think the pictures of the outside area are very misleading. The approach to the White Moss door is very scruffy and quite dirty and there is no easy access to the terrace at the front - no useable outdoor space to enjoy the georgeous view. You can climb out of the sitting room window but obviously that was not satisfactory. Noisy neighbours started at 6:30 am, the insulation is poor. Even at this time of year the storage radiators were barely adequate. We arrived back from a hard day on the fells cold and wet and didnât really warm up until we went to a warm pub! Some strange omissions - only one toilet roll for 5 people!! and no hand soap in the bathroom. There is nothing drastically wrong but in general as we have spent many weeks and week end in the lakes it was disappointing and not good value for money compared with any other place we have hired. Adequate but not much attention to detail.

We had a lovely stay at Toffee Cottage over the Christmas period. The cottage itself is very clean and cosy, and has everything you could need and more, warm and lots of hot water. The scenery is beautiful, and as you are situated at the top of quite a steep hill, you really do get to appreciate the peace and quiet of the area, the area itself is really well situated for several lovely walks and the pub down the road is great and dog friendly. We did take our dog with us and we appreciated the offering of dog bowls and treats, the garden is fairly well enclosed too. The only thing I would say is that if you are a fan of a firmer pillow, then you may want to take your own as they were a little soft for us, the beds however are very comfortable and the linens/ towels provided were spotless. Wonderful stay which we enjoyed thoroughly.
