What our customers say about their holidays
Angus - Verified booking
Yes, 'Met Expectations' but.
.. For the price (economic, ie about £100 p/n) the standard was mostly good, so no complaints there, but the 'write up' was rather 'over-the-top' - described as 'luxurious' - well not quite, eg I'd like a more comfortable bed for 'luxurious' and the 'platter of delicious local produce' consisted of a Higates flapjack made in Wasall and two Lichfields products - digestives and 'highland shorties' - from Northants. Not exactly 'local'! Didn't eat any of it - but the 'delicious may be a bit over the top too. Better to not mention them. In similar vein, the views were described as 'outstanding' - well, they were pleasant enough - a couple of fields with sheep, not exactly 'outstanding' especially in an area where there are indeed so many truly outstanding views. Strange that, although bed linen and towels were included, there was no tea towel. It was explained that this was because so many tea towels were 'stolen' by previous guests. My advice - just add £5 to the o/n price and buy in a load of Lakes tea towels and invite guests to take it away with them, if they wish, as a souvenir - compliments of the owners. One final thing - about being 'welcoming' - I did not read on the site I booked through (snaptrip.com) about not checking in before 4pm although I may have overlooked it but we did follow the advice to phone and let the owners know our ETA. Bit surprised that my wife was told to 'wait' while lady's husband was consulted before agreeing to our arrival at 3pm. When we arrived - after a 5 hour drive - at 10 minutes to 3pm, the entry gate was locked. It could have/should have been open for us - but perhaps the owners wanted to give us a message? Not the way to 'welcome' guests! By-the-by, with winter approachng and clocks going back an hour at the end of this month, if guests are not 'welcome' before 4pm, they will be arriving more or less in the dark. Surely, even with Covid ceansing, there is time from 10 am (departure time) to 3pm - 5 hours - to thoroughly clean and sanitise correctly.

Having been to the Lakes pretty much every year since the age of 9, I know the area well and have been to Greystoke before.
The Crook is situated in the centre of the village. Whilst there is no parking directly outside of the property, you can park around 20 yards away in the street. As the street in which The Crook is situated is a T-junction, it is quiet. The property itself is perfect for one or two couples. It is cosy, with a large bedroom and walk in shower/bathroom downstairs and a smaller bedroom and ensuite upstairs, along with the kitchen/diner and front room. The property is tastefully decorated and the beds comfortable. There is everything that you could possibly need and Penrith is only a 5 to 10 minute drive away. There you will find restaurants, pubs and supermarkets including Booths, M & S, Morrisons & Sainsburys. It is only a 20 minute drive to Keswick and the villages of Dacre, Pooley Bridge and Askham are only a short drive away. I would recommend eating at any of the pubs/restaurants in Askham, including Michelin starred Alium at Askham Hall, which is out of this world. A few yards away is the local, the Boot and Shoe. This is possibly the friendliest pub I have visited (along with The Old Crown at Hesket Newmarket) in the Lakes. The landlord and landlady are lovely and the food is excellent. The owners of the Crook are friendly and helpful as well. Could not recommend this place more and whilst many flock to Keswick, Ambleside and the like, Greystoke with it's friendly community and village pub is a hidden gem.

Ust as lovely as it looks in the pictures!
Luxurious cottage in stunning village with incredible views! Thankyou for allowing us to stay, even though only 2 nights were available in this peak time. Garden secure & beautiful. Cottage excellent standard, lovely waterfall shower, clean & tidy. Had couple of maintenance things to report but Sykes / caretakers were quick to respond, so assume was sorted for the next people? These were that the wooden door covering the fridge door was hanging off and dangerous ( very heavy and ready to fall from a height). No tools available or we could have unscrewed the remaining hinge and at least made it safe. The kettle had a slow leak so sat in a puddle of water! Only other comment is that there were a few cobwebs ( handfuls when plugging things in!) and the towels were tiny/ thin. Have since visited 2 more Sykes cottages with thick large fluffy towels which emphasised the contrast. A note about the âshortâ driveway might alsobe helpful to some - our average 4WD was a squeeze to close the gate, so had to unpack and let the dogs in/out with the gate open. A truck or van would not fit. Shap village very friendly & gorgeous abbey cafe on the high street. Greyhound inn great food again very friendly .Swimming pool was very cold. Nice to explore a different part of the lakes.

Great choice for the Northern lakes area - really good location for exploring the area.
We also loved walking around the friendly village. We also managed to park right outside, though there is a carpark just around the corner. Super clean, well equipped and very well-appointed with nice hot showers. The living room in particular was very hygge and had a decent sized TV (some places have tiny ones!). BYO Netflix passwords etc. The only minor grumble would be that with 4 adults, it was a bit of a squeeze in the kitchen with pulling the dining table out for us all to be seated. Dishwasher brilliant (tablets provided). Book for the Clickham Inn pub, supermarket Booths just down in Penrith and must visit for Rheged. If you go to the cinema, there are no ads so be on time! The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is on at the moment (a bargain £5) so definitely do visit, plus there's excellent cake. We also really appreciated the entrance hallway as super handy to have the central area - a shoe rack would be handy in future. Washing machine appreciated (byo powder etc) and there is 1 clothes horse. Would happily book again.

We had such a brilliant stay at Little Winder, the cottage was perfect for us and our little dog.
We enjoyed walks from the door step, (Including Athurâs Pike and Bonscale Pike) watched the red squirrels playing in the trees from the window and slept peacefully after days of hiking. The location and views from the cottages was superb. The cottage itself has a good sized entrance hall to take off your walking gear and a shared drying room next door to hang anything wet out on the heaters. The Amazon TV was great and we just logged into our Netflix in the evening or watched the free view channels from the comfy sofa. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook tea each night, there isnât a freezer on its own just a small compartment in the fridge but we only needed ice so no issue for us. The bed was big and comfortable, the shower was compact but lovely and powerful and hot. There was a secure dog field to let the dog off the lead and have a good play. The hosts were brilliant, made sure we had everything we needed and left us a welcome gift which was such a nice touch. We would definitely stay again.
