What our customers say about their holidays
Vicky - Verified booking
The property was totally unsuitable for us.
There were several flies in every room and evidence in ceilings and walls where people had squashed them. Many spiders on ceiling and especially corners. When I booked I explained we must have ground floor accommodation as my husband can no longer manage the stairs. I was totally horrified to find steep stairs going up to kitchen and living room. As we arrived in the dark and later than we had intended there was nothing we could do about it that night. We phoned Sykes the following morning and they said they were unable to assist with finding us alternative accommodation but would get their customer service to contact us by phone. To date this has not happened. We were left by ourselves, stressed and worried where we would sleep that night. Once back home we are straight into a planned building project and extremely busy. The only communication Sykes have had with us is an email 27.9.23, 20 days after our 1 night stay from Customer Relations Team saying Francesca will respond to us. She has not called. Asking us to complete another questionnaire is their only contact with us We are left out of pocket for the 3 nights we could not stay in our accommodation and still stressed by the experience. We are extremely disappointed with Sykes and would not wish this situation on anybody else. I am hoping that by writing this report it will galvanise Sykes into contacting us direct and resolving this problem. Since 18th sept we have heard nothing other than the 1 email mentioned above . Unrelated to this property, Sykes had already cancelled our original booking due to a leak, no apology cancelling so late on, we were left with trying to find an alternative.
We found that Helton Fell was available for the same period. The property itself is very centrally located, in the middle of the high street so easy access to everything in Kendal. It's well equipped, well finished, little extras like a Bose Link where you could play music was great. Very clean & tidy, plenty of seating which is comfortable, no shortage of kitchenware, plates, cuttlery, glasses etc. overall it was a great property. Our main issue, which to date we are still waiting for Sykes to acknowledge our complaint & confirm how they intend to deal with, the listing says king size bed in the main bedroom with zip link in the other bedroom that can be made up to a kingsize bed, neither are correct. We called the owner to see if we were doing something wrong, she confirmed that they are 2 twins, neither are or could be kingsize beds. It wasn't a big issue but on reviewing the listing the pictures had been taken to suggest the main bedroom was a kingsize bed, this is a deliberate mis-sell / false marketing of the property which I called out to Sykes, I asked for this to be logged as a complaint, to date we haven;t heard from Sykes, haven't had a complaint reference so assume they simply don't care & are happy to do nothing about it! The owner was lovely, exchanged a bunch of phone calls & she was always at the end of the phone & offered info when we asked. I would recommend this property as it really is a lovely, clean & comfy apartment but you will be staying in single beds.

We had a wonderful stay in Kendal.
We booked last minute and I hoped that the listing details would be as good as they sounded - and they absolutely were. The apartment was so welcoming, comfortable and filled with fittings and furnishings that showed that the property is loved and cared for and the finer details have been carefully considered throughout. Itâs so nice to come somewhere that has lovely crockery, cutlery and most importantly good mugs!! The apartment was spotless from top to bottom. Kendal is the perfect base to explore the lakes from. We certainly made the most of our National Trust membership and tagged in plenty of other adventures along the way. Although the property doesnât have a designated parking space, this was never a problem. The 3 day parking permit which can be bought so easily from the machines, is such a good initiative by the local council. If you are visiting, this is a definite must do! The weather was hot when we first arrived so we had to have the windows open at night to start with, there was some noise from the high street into the night but it wasnât the end of the world. When the windows were shut there was none! Some lovely places to eat and drink in Kendal. The welcome book was a great help to get us started and we wandered and found even more. I would certainly return to the property and recommended to family and friends when we got home. A much needed, enjoyable break, was underpinned by the superb space at Helton Fell. Thank you!

The cottage was originally booked for the Spring but due to Covid restrictions we had to defer the trip until October.
However the cottage was lovely albeit on a muddy farm due to the weather. Heavy rain at night but apart from one day, lovely weather during the day so ideal for a holiday. It is also a working farm so bookers need to be aware of this. Don't expect to keep your car clean. The cottage had everything we needed and was very clean and tidy. It was also ideally located for us as it was near everything we wanted to visit. Ravensglass to Eskdale railway, Westwater, Conniston Water etc. Also took the train to Carlisle which is a great journey as the railway follows the coastline for much of the journey and only £18 return. There is a lot to do in Western Lakes and the cottage is an ideal location to see the area. The only criticism I have is with Sykes. Having originally booked for the Spring and having to move the booking to October due to Covid lockdown, we were never contacted re the price difference, which was about £100 cheaper. It would have been nice to have been asked if we were happy to continue to pay the extra £100 to the owners, which we were. We are retired and have not been financially affected by this disease, but understand many have been affected, so were happy to pay the extra. But it would have been nice to have been asked.

Helton Fell is a great location in the centre of Kendal.
Right opposite one of the best pubs in Kendal and a Tesco Express! The drop off point is right outside the entrance to the apartment; handy on arrival and departure. There are 2 sets of stairs up to the apartment, but we were prepared for that. The nearest car park is at the back of the property - 2 mins walk away. We were able to use our parking ticket for 7 days at many of the Southern Lakes car parks in and around Windermere, Grasmere and Ambleside which was a bonus having paid £35 for each car. The beds, linen and high spec of the property is notable, especially bathrooms and kitchen, which is well laid out and good for those like us who enjoy cooking. TV and WIFI access v good. The windows in the lounge area add a lot of natural light which is fabulous as well as good views, considering location within a town centre environment. Jayne was v helpful with our questions and the communication before and during our stay was extremely accurate and responsive. Thank you!
